Emission Measures and Emission-measure-weighted Temperatures of Shocked ISM and Ejecta in Supernova Remnants
A goal of supernova remnant (SNR) evolution models is to relate fundamental
parameters of a supernova (SN) explosion and progenitor star to the current
state of its SNR. The SNR hot plasma is characterized by its observed X-ray
spectrum, which yields electron temperature, emission measure and abundances.
Depending on their brightness, the properties of the plasmas heated by the SNR
forward shock, reverse shock or both can be measured. The current work utilizes
models which are spherically symmetric. One dimensional hydrodynamic
simulations are carried out for SNR evolution prior to onset of radiative
losses. From these, we derive dimensionless emission measures and
emission-measure-weighted temperatures, and we present fitting formulae for
these quantities as functions of scaled SNR time. These models allow one to
infer SNR explosion energy, circumstellar medium density, age, ejecta mass and
ejecta density profile from SNR observations. The new results are incorporated
into the SNR modelling code SNRPy. The code is demonstrated with application to
three historical SNRs: Kepler, Tycho and SN1006.Comment: 50 pages, 10 figures, 5 table

Assessing the Variance in Pupil Attainment: How Important is the School Attended?
We explore the variation in pupil attainment at the end of secondary schooling in England. The paper links data on all schools and all pupils within these schools to analyse the role of the school in accounting for this variation. We analyse a number of different indicators of pupil attainment including value added between the end of primary and secondary schooling and attainment levels at the end of secondary schooling. We examine indicators that were the focus of the school accounting framework as well as other indicators that were not directly part of how schools were assessed. We show that schools account for a minority of the variance in pupil attainment, and the extent of the variation accounted for by the school is sensitive to the measure of pupil attainment used. In addition, we find that the majority of the explained school-level variance in attainment is related to school composition. However, most of the variance in attainment remains unexplained, raising questions about what other factors contribute to the variation in school performance
Mouse tafazzin is required for male germ cell meiosis and spermatogenesis
Barth syndrome is an X-linked mitochondrial disease, symptoms of which include neutropenia and cardiac myopathy. These symptoms are the most significant clinical consequences of a disease, which is increasingly recognised to have a variable presentation. Mutation in the Taz gene in Xq28 is thought to be responsible for the condition, by altering mitochondrial lipid content and mitochondrial function. Male chimeras carrying a targeted mutation of Taz on their X-chromosome were infertile. Testes from the Taz knockout chimeras were smaller than their control counterparts and this was associated with a disruption of the progression of spermatocytes through meiosis to spermiogenesis. Taz knockout ES cells also showed a defect when differentiated to germ cells in vitro. Mutant spermatocytes failed to progress past the pachytene stage of meiosis and had higher levels of DNA double strand damage and increased levels of endogenous retrotransposon activity. Altogether these data revealed a novel role for Taz in helping to maintain genome integrity in meiosis and facilitating germ cell differentiation. We have unravelled a novel function for the Taz protein, which should contribute to an understanding of how a disruption of the Taz gene results in the complex symptoms underlying Barth Syndrome
Efficiency at optimal work from finite reservoirs: a probabilistic perspective
We revisit the classic thermodynamic problem of maximum work extraction from
two arbitrary sized hot and cold reservoirs, modelled as perfect gases.
Assuming ignorance about the extent to which the process has advanced, which
implies an ignorance about the final temperatures, we quantify the prior
information about the process and assign a prior distribution to the unknown
temperature(s). This requires that we also take into account the temperature
values which are regarded to be unphysical in the standard theory, as they lead
to a contradiction with the physical laws. Instead in our formulation, such
values appear to be consistent with the given prior information and hence are
included in the inference. We derive estimates of the efficiency at optimal
work from the expected values of the final temperatures, and show that these
values match with the exact expressions in the limit when any one of the
reservoirs is very large compared to the other. For other relative sizes of the
reservoirs, we suggest a weighting procedure over the estimates from two valid
inference procedures, that generalizes the procedure suggested earlier in [J.
Phys. A: Math. Theor. {\bf 46}, 365002 (2013)]. Thus a mean estimate for
efficiency is obtained which agrees with the optimal performance to a high
