    The investment potential of warm-season grasses is compared with that of cool-season grasses, with special emphasis on hill-land beef production. In addition to evaluating relative costs and returns for various grazing systems, a sensitivity analysis is conducted. The results are then illustrated for a representative hill-land farm in West Virginia, and both an optimal and a set of quasi-optimal solutions are generated within the linear programming framework.     Absorption of gamma-emitting fission products and activation products by rice under flooded and unflooded conditions from two tropical soils

    The absorption of gamma-emitting fission products 106Ru,125Sb,137Cs and144Ce and activation products59Fe,58Co.54Mn and65Zn by rice plants grown on two contrasting tropical soils, namely, a blak soil (pellustert) and a laterite (oxisol), and the effects of flooding were studied under controlled conditions. Results indicated greater uptake of 106Ru and 125Sb from the black soil than from the laterite. In contrast, the uptake of 144Ce and 137Cs was greater in the laterite than in the black soil. Flooding treatment enhanced the uptake of all these fission products by rice plants in the laterite soil whereas this effect was observed only for 125Sb and 137Cs in the black soil. The plant uptake of activation products from the two soil types showed maximum accumulation of 65Zn followed by 54Mn,59Fe and 58Co in both soil types. Besides, uptake of these nuclides was greater from the laterite soil than from the black soil. Flooding treatment for rice while showing a reduction of 59Fe uptake, showed an increase in plant uptake of 58Co,54Mn and 65Zn in both soil types

    Production of oxygen free radicals by Ehrlich ascites tumour cells: effect of lipids

    Phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA), calcium ionophore A23187 and platelet activating factor (PAF) stimulated the generation of oxygen free radicals (nitro-blue tetrazolium reduction) in Ehrlich ascites tumour (EAT) cells. PAF was effective at an optimal concentration of 4 μM, but was inhibited by BN 52021, a specific PAF antagonist. Lyso-PAF was ineffective. Inclusion of different lipids during incubation prior to the addition of PAF, resulted in the activation/inhibition of free radical generation. Among the phospholipids at a concentration of 50 μg/ml, the order of activation was phosphatidylserine > phosphatidylglycerol > phosphoinositides > phosphatidylinositol > phosphatidylethanolamine. Phosphatidylcholine was not effective, while sphingolipids were inhibitory. In addition, Ehrlich ascites tumour cells grown in mice under marginal vitamin A deficiency, showed an augmented production of free radicals compared to control cells. This was suppressed by exogenous addition of vitamin A or superoxide dismutase. These results suggest that membrane lipids and dietary factors like vitamin A probably function as physiological modulators in regulating the free radical generation

    Comparative Outcomes of Resident vs Attending Performed Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    OBJECTIVE: To determine whether outcomes are different when surgery is performed by resident or attending surgeons, and which variables may affect outcomes. DESIGN: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched from inception to May 2014 alongside the bibliographies of all included or relevant studies. Any study comparing outcomes from surgery performed by resident vs attending surgeons was eligible for inclusion. The main outcome measures were surgical complications (classified by Clavien-Dindo grade), death, operative time, and length of stay. Data were extracted independently by 2 authors and analyzed using the random-effects model. RESULTS: The final analysis included 182 eligible studies that enrolled 141 555 patients. Resident performed surgery took longer by 10.2 minutes (95% confidence interval (CI): 8.38-11.95), and had more Clavien-Dindo grade 1 (rate ratio = 1.14, 95% CI: 1.02-1.29) and grade 3a complications (rate ratio = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.04-1.44). Resident performed surgery resulted in fewer deaths (risk ratio = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.70-0.999) with a shorter length of stay of -0.49 days (95% CI: -0.77 to -0.21). Significant heterogeneity was present in 7 of 10 outcomes, which persisted during multiple subgroup analyses. CONCLUSIONS: Resident performed surgery appears to be safe in carefully selected patients. The significant amount of heterogeneity present in the study outcomes prevents generalizability of these results to specific clinical contexts
