    Hydrogeology and geochemistry of the sulfur karst springs at Santa Cesarea Terme (Apulia, southern Italy)

    This work describes the geochemical and hydrogeological characteristics of Santa Cesarea Terme, an active sulfuric acid speleogenetic system located along the Adriatic coastline (Apulia, southern Italy). It represents a very peculiar site, where rising thermal and acidic waters mix with seawater creating undersaturated solutions with respect to CaCO3, able to dissolve and corrode limestone and create caves. The Santa Cesarea Terme system is composed of four caves: Fetida, Sulfurea, Gattulla, and Solfatara. Hypogene morphologies and abundant deposits of native sulfur (especially in Gattulla Cave) and sulfate minerals are present in these caves. Fetida and Gattulla caves were investigated primarily because they are easily accessible throughout the whole year through artificial entrances, the other caves being reachable only from the sea. Geochemical analysis of water, monitoring of cave atmosphere, and measurement of the stable isotopes of S, O, and H helped to identify the main processes occurring in this complex cave system. In particular, changes in Ba2+ and Sr2+ concentration allowed for the identification of two main domains of influence, characterized by marine and rising acidic waters

    Prediction of Renal Acid Load in Adult Patients on Parenteral Nutrition

    Metabolic acidosis and metabolic bone disease are frequent complications in patients on parenteral nutrition (PN). A common contributor to these complications could be a daily high renal acid load. This study aims to find a method for predicting the potential total acid load (PTAL) and the pH of the compounded parenteral nutrition mixtures. The pH and titratable acidity (TA) of fifty compounded mixtures were measured. The potential metabolic acid load (PMAL) was calculated by considering the amount of nutrients that are acid producers and consumers. The PTAL of the TPN mixtures was calculated by adding TA to PMAL. Multiple linear regression analyses were used to develop a predictive model for the TA and pH of the compounded mixtures. The predicted TA and pH values of the analyzed mixtures agreed with those measured (Passing-Bablok analysis). The PTAL was >50 mmol/day for 82% of the mixtures, >75 mmol/day for 40% of the mixtures, and >100 mmol/day for 22% of the mixtures. The prediction of the renal acid load in patients on long-term PN could allow more appropriate acid-base balancing. Moreover, predicting the pH of such mixtures could be useful to pharmacists to assess the stability and compatibility of the components in the compounded mixtures

    A tunable nanoplatform of nanogold functionalised with Angiogenin peptides for anti-angiogenic therapy of brain tumours

    Angiogenin (ANG), an endogenous protein that plays a key role in cell growth and survival, has been scrutinised here as promising nanomedicine tool for the modulation of pro-/anti-angiogenic processes in brain cancer therapy. Specifically, peptide fragments from the putative cell membrane binding domain (residues 60-68) of the protein were used in this study to obtain peptide-functionalised spherical gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of about 10 nm and 30 nm in optical and hydrodynamic size, respectively. Different hybrid biointerfaces were fabricated by peptide physical adsorption (Ang60-68) or chemisorption (the cysteine analogous Ang60-68Cys) at the metal nanoparticle surface, and cellular assays were performed in the comparison with ANG-functionalised AuNPs. Cellular treatments were performed both in basal and in copper-supplemented cell culture medium, to scrutinise the synergic effect of the metal, which is another known angiogenic factor. Two brain cell lines were investigated in parallel, namely tumour glioblastoma (A172) and neuron-like differentiated neuroblastoma (d-SH-SY5Y). Results on cell viability/proliferation, cytoskeleton actin, angiogenin translocation and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) release pointed to the promising potentialities of the developed systems as anti-angiogenic tunable nanoplaftforms in cancer cells treatment

    Microbial Community Characterizing Vermiculations from Karst Caves and Its Role in Their Formation

    The microbiota associated with vermiculations from karst caves is largely unknown. Vermiculations are enigmatic deposits forming worm-like patterns on cave walls all over the world. They represent a precious focus for geomicrobiological studies aimed at exploring both the microbial life of these ecosystems and the vermiculation genesis. This study comprises the first approach on the microbial communities thriving in Pertosa-Auletta Cave (southern Italy) vermiculations by next-generation sequencing. The most abundant phylum in vermiculations was Proteobacteria, followed by Acidobacteria > Actinobacteria > Nitrospirae > Firmicutes > Planctomycetes > Chloroflexi > Gemmatimonadetes > Bacteroidetes > Latescibacteria. Numerous less-represented taxonomic groups (< 1%), as well as unclassified ones, were also detected. From an ecological point of view, all the groups co-participate in the biogeochemical cycles in these underground environments, mediating oxidation-reduction reactions, promoting host rock dissolution and secondary mineral precipitation, and enriching the matrix in organic matter. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy brought evidence of a strong interaction between the biotic community and the abiotic matrix, supporting the role of microbial communities in the formation process of vermiculations

    Boundary dynamics for bireversible and for contracting automaton groups

    We study the dynamics of the action of an automaton group on the set of infinite words, and more precisely the discontinuous points of the map which associates to a point its set of stabilizers - the singular points. We show that, for any Mealy automaton, the set of singular points has measure zero. Then we focus our attention on several classes of automata. We characterize those contracting automata generating groups without singular points, and apply this characterization to the Basilica group. We prove that potential examples of reversible automata generating infinite groups without singular points are necessarily bireversible. We also provide some conditions for such examples to exist. Finally, we study some dynamical properties of the Schreier graphs in the boundary

Abstract OBJECTIVE: Purpose of our study was to assess the potential role of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) in the differential diagnosis between benign and malignant nodes. SUBJECT AND METHODS: We enrolled 32 subjects: 14 with benign lymphadenopathy, 17 patients with histologically proved malignant disease before beginning treatment and 1 patient with lymphoma after chemotherapeutic treatment. In all patients we used fast spin echo T2-weighted images in axial and coronal planes, fast spin echo T1-weighted images before and after contrast medium of administration in axial and coronal planes. Before contrast administration diffusion sequences were acquired on the axial and coronal plane (b factor of 0.500 and 1000 s/mm(2)) and then apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps were reconstructed. RESULTS: On diffusion images, 13/14 patients with benign nodes showed low signal intensity and had high signal on ADC maps, whereas all patients with malignant diseases appeared hyperintense on diffusion images and with low signal intensity on ADC maps. Only a patient with tuberculosis showed a low ADC value. The mean ADC value of malignant nodes was about 0.85 × 10(-3)mm(2)/s, the mean value of benign nodes was 1.448 × 10(-3)mm(2)/s; this difference was statistically significant (p < 0.01). The mean ADC value of treated nodes was 1.75 × 10(-3)mm(2)/s. The best threshold value was 1.03 × 10(-3)mm(2)/s, obtaining a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 92.9%. CONCLUSIONS: Diffusion imaging could be considered an important supportive tool for the diagnosis of enlarged cervical lymphadenopathies. Copyright © 2009 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
