Observing Brownian motion in vibration-fluidized granular matter
At the beginning of last century, Gerlach and Lehrer observed the rotational
Brownian motion of a very fine wire immersed in an equilibrium environment, a
gas. This simple experiment eventually permitted the full development of one of
the most important ideas of equilibrium statistical mechanics: the very
complicated many-particle problem of a large number of molecules colliding with
the wire, can be represented by two macroscopic parameters only, namely
viscosity and the temperature. Can this idea, mathematically developed in the
so-called Langevin model and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem be used to
describe systems that are far from equilibrium? Here we address the question
and reproduce the Gerlach and Lehrer experiment in an archetype non-equilibrium
system, by immersing a sensitive torsion oscillator in a granular system of
millimetre-size grains, fluidized by strong external vibrations. The
vibro-fluidized granular medium is a driven environment, with continuous
injection and dissipation of energy, and the immersed oscillator can be seen as
analogous to an elastically bound Brownian particle. We show, by measuring the
noise and the susceptibility, that the experiment can be treated, in first
approximation, with the same formalism as in the equilibrium case, giving
experimental access to a ''granular viscosity'' and an ''effective
temperature'', however anisotropic and inhomogeneous, and yielding the
surprising result that the vibro-fluidized granular matter behaves as a
''thermal'' bath satisfying a fluctuation-dissipation relation
Hall Anomaly and Vortex-Lattice Melting in Superconducting Single Crystal YBa2Cu3O7-d
Sub-nanovolt resolution longitudinal and Hall voltages are measured in an
ultra pure YBa2Cu3O7-d single crystal. The Hall anomaly and the first-order
vortex-lattice melting transition are observed simultaneously. Changes in the
dynamic behavior of the vortex solid and liquid are correlated with features of
the Hall conductivity sxy. With the magnetic field oriented at an angle from
the twin-boundaries, the Hall conductivity sharply decreases toward large
negative values at the vortex-lattice melting transition.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures included, Postscript, to appear in Phys. Rev. Let
Correlations between eigenvalues of large random matrices with independent entries
We derive the connected correlation functions for eigenvalues of large
Hermitian random matrices with independently distributed elements using both a
diagrammatic and a renormalization group (RG) inspired approach. With the
diagrammatic method we obtain a general form for the one, two and three-point
connected Green function for this class of ensembles when matrix elements are
identically distributed, and then discuss the derivation of higher order
functions by the same approach. Using the RG approach we re-derive the one and
two-point Green functions and show they are unchanged by choosing certain
ensembles with non-identically distributed elements. Throughout, we compare the
Green functions we obtain to those from the class of ensembles with unitary
invariant distributions and discuss universality in both ensemble classes.Comment: 23 pages, RevTex, hard figures available from [email protected]
Hysteretic creep of elastic manifolds
We study the dynamic response of driven systems in the presence of quenched
disorder. A simple heuristic model for hysteretic creep of elastic manifolds is
proposed and evaluated numerically. It provides a qualitative explanation of
the phenomenology observed in experiments on high-temperature superconductors.Comment: 4 pages Revtex + epsf, plus 3 figures postscrip

π-Diradical Aromatic Soot Precursors in Flames.
Soot emitted from incomplete combustion of hydrocarbon fuels contributes to global warming and causes human disease. The mechanism by which soot nanoparticles form within hydrocarbon flames is still an unsolved problem in combustion science. Mechanisms proposed to date involving purely chemical growth are limited by slow reaction rates, whereas mechanisms relying on solely physical interactions between molecules are limited by weak intermolecular interactions that are unstable at flame temperatures. Here, we show evidence for a reactive π-diradical aromatic soot precursor imaged using non-contact atomic force microscopy. Localization of π-electrons on non-hexagonal rings was found to allow for Kekulé aromatic soot precursors to possess a triplet diradical ground state. Barrierless chain reactions are shown between these reactive sites, which provide thermally stable aromatic rim-linked hydrocarbons under flame conditions. Quantum molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate physical condensation of aromatics that survive for tens of picoseconds. Bound internal rotors then enable the reactive sites to find each other and become chemically cross-linked before dissociation. These species provide a rapid, thermally stable chain reaction toward soot nanoparticle formation and could provide molecular targets for limiting the emission of these toxic combustion products
Reentrant Peak Effect in an anisotropic superconductor 2H-NbSe_2 : Role of disorder
The reentrant nature of Peak Effect is established in a single crystal of
2H-NbSe_2 via electrical transport and dc magnetisation studies. The role of
disorder on the reentrant branch of PE has been examined in three single
crystals with varying levels of quenched random disorder. Increasing disorder
presumably shrinks the (H,T) parameter space over which vortex array retains
spatial order. Although, the upper branch of the PE curve is somewhat robust,
the lower reentrant branch of the same curve is strongly affected by disorder.Comment: 5 Pages of text, 4 figure
Wet Granular Materials
Most studies on granular physics have focused on dry granular media, with no
liquids between the grains. However, in geology and many real world
applications (e.g., food processing, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, civil
engineering, constructions, and many industrial applications), liquid is
present between the grains. This produces inter-grain cohesion and drastically
modifies the mechanical properties of the granular media (e.g., the surface
angle can be larger than 90 degrees). Here we present a review of the
mechanical properties of wet granular media, with particular emphasis on the
effect of cohesion. We also list several open problems that might motivate
future studies in this exciting but mostly unexplored field.Comment: review article, accepted for publication in Advances in Physics;

Educational interventions on pregnancy vaccinations during childbirth classes improves vaccine coverages among pregnant women in Palermo’s province
Maternal immunization is considered the best intervention in order to prevent influenza infection of pregnant women and influenza and pertussis infection of newborns. Despite the existing recommendations, vaccination coverage rates in Italy remain very low. Starting from August 2018, maternal immunization against influenza and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis were strongly recommended by the Italian Ministry of Health. We conducted a cross sectional study to estimate the effectiveness of an educational intervention, conducted during childbirth classes in three general hospitals in the Palermo metropolitan area, Italy, on vaccination adherence during pregnancy. To this end, a questionnaire on knowledge, attitudes, and immunization practices was structured and self-administered to a sample of pregnant women attending childbirth classes. Then, an educational intervention on maternal immunization, followed by a counseling, was conducted by a Public Health medical doctor. After 30 days following the interventions, the adherence to the recommended vaccinations (influenza and pertussis) was evaluated. At the end of the study 326 women were enrolled and 201 responded to the follow-up survey. After the intervention, among the responding pregnant women 47.8% received influenza vaccination (+44.8%), 57.7% diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccination (+50.7%) and 64.2% both the recommended vaccinations (+54.8%). A significant association was found between pregnant women that received at least one vaccination during pregnancy and higher educational level (graduation degree/master’s degree), employment status (employed part/full-time) and influenza vaccination adherence during past seasons (at least one during last five years). The implementation of vaccination educational interventions, including counseling by healthcare professionals (HCPs), on maternal immunization during childbirth courses improved considerably the vaccination adherence during pregnancy
Multifractal burst in the spatio-temporal dynamics of jerky flow
The collective behavior of dislocations in jerky flow is studied in Al-Mg
polycrystalline samples subjected to constant strain rate tests. Complementary
dynamical, statistical and multifractal analyses are carried out on the
stress-time series recorded during jerky flow to characterize the distinct
spatio-temporal dynamical regimes. It is shown that the hopping type B and the
propagating type A bands correspond to chaotic and self-organized critical
states respectively. The crossover between these types of bands is identified
by a large spread in the multifractal spectrum. These results are interpreted
on the basis of competing scales and mechanisms.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures To be published in Phys. Rev. Lett. (2001
Supercooling of the disordered vortex lattice in Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8+d
Time-resolved local induction measurements near to the vortex lattice
order-disorder transition in optimally doped
BiSrCaCuO single crystals shows that the
high-field, disordered phase can be quenched to fields as low as half the
transition field. Over an important range of fields, the electrodynamical
behavior of the vortex system is governed by the co-existence of the two phases
in the sample. We interpret the results in terms of supercooling of the
high-field phase and the possible first order nature of the order-disorder
transition at the ``second peak''.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to Nature, July 10th, 1999; Rejected
