Courtship Behavior in \u3ci\u3eHabronattus Captiosus\u3c/i\u3e (Araneae: Salticidae)

    Get PDF
Courtship display of Habronattus captiosus involves several behavioral elements common to other members of the Habronattus coecatus species group. The one unique element is vibration of the patellae when raised over the opisthosoma. Male-male interactions included an agonistic display and grappling. Fourteen male-female interactions were observed, which exhibited various combinations of display elements. There was one successful mating and one case of cannibalism by a male

Spiders from Heading Bluegrass (POA Prantensis L.) in Roseau County, Minnesota

    Get PDF
Northwestern Minnesota is one of the principal producers of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) seed in the United States. Extensive areas of cropland in Roseau County are devoted to this seed production. The natural vegetation of Roseau County is in itself interesting, since the county straddles the ecotone between boreo-nemoral forest and prairie. The types of plant cover include the following: prairie, jack pine forest, black spruce-larch bog, aspen woods, spruce-fir forest, and river flood plain forest. The soil types are consequently, quite complex. Generally, bluegrass is grown on burnt and drained peatland, or former prairie sites. The topography of the bluegrass growing areas is flat, and spring flooding is extensive. The climate is typically continental, with severe winters and a three month, frost free growing season

Description of a New Species of \u3ci\u3eParadamoetas\u3c/i\u3e (Araneae: Salticidae), with a Revised Key to the Genus

    Get PDF
Paradamoetas changuinola new species, is described. The range of this antlike genus of jumping spiders is extended south to Panama. A revised key to the four specics currently recognized is presented

Extreme Northern and Southern Distribution Records for Jumping Spiders (Araneae, Salticidae) in the Western Hemisphere

    Get PDF
In Alaska and Canada the northern limit of salticid spider distribution corresponds closely to the boreal forest-tundra ecotone. The only occurrence in the polar tundra is at Tuktoyaktuk, Northwest Territories, Canada. In South America, Puerto Deseado, Argentine marks the southernmost record.Key words: Salticidae, jumping spider, distributionMots clés: Salticidés, araignée sauteuse, distributio

Synanthropic Spiders Araneae of the Twin Cities Area

    Get PDF
A review of those spiders which are most likely to enter manmade structures or which occur on highly disturbed ground is presented. The nine species which are dependent on man\u27s activities are discussed in more detail. Along with the species names there is a reference to illustrations in two available field guides to aid in identification

A Study in the Summer Phenology of Dionychious Spiders from Northern Minnesota Forests

    Get PDF
Dionychious ground layer spiders from Larix and Populus stands were collected by pitfall traps. The typical pattern of dominant, influent and accessory species was well marked. Populus stands had greater diversity of species than Larix stands. Those species characterized by large male:female sex ratios had sharp peaks in the first month of collecting, and others had smaller early season peaks or early season and late season peaks. Traps with an apron leading to the trap caught twice as many specimens compared to traps without an apron

Spiders (Araneae) from the Alpine Zone of the South and West Flanks of Mt. Wrangell, Alaska (62°N, 144°W)

    Get PDF
A series of spiders was collected during a summer season from the alpine zone of Mt. Wrangell, Alaska (62 degrees N, 144 degrees W). Most of the species collected have also been taken from lowland sites in the boreal forest and the Arctic and have extensive ranges in the northern nearctic. Some of these species also occur in the palearctic. The dominant families were the Linyphiidae (erigoninae and Linyphiinae) and the Lycosidae, the only families represented by more than two species within a family. The other families represented were the Agelenidae, Araneidae, Dictynidae, Salticidae and Thomisidae. A phalangid and trombidiiform mite were also collected.Key words: spiders, Mt. Wrangell, alpine zone, Alaska, neararctic and holarctic distributionMots clés: araignées, mont Wrangell, zone alpine, Alaska région néarctique, distribution holarctiqu

Can Nuclear Power Be Part of the Solution?

    Get PDF
The author discusses the importance of incorporating the full costs of operating a nuclear power plant in the U.S., such as climate impact, risk of accidents, and safe disposal of radioactive waste. He argues on the need for changes in the country\u27s evaluation of nuclear power which include the elimination of subsidies, and the requirement to buy full-coverage insurance for accidents. The author further highlights the cost of greenhouse gas emissions from nuclear power plants

Reprint of: B Cells in Chronic Graft-versus-Host Disease

    Get PDF
AbstractChronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) continues to be a common complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Unlike acute graft-versus-host disease, which is mediated almost entirely by donor T cells, the immune pathology of cGVHD is more complex and donor B cells have also been found to play an important role. Recent studies from several laboratories have enhanced our understanding of how donor B cells contribute to this clinical syndrome and this has led to new therapeutic opportunities. Here, Dr Sarantopoulos reviews some of the important mechanisms responsible for persistent B cell activation and loss of B cell tolerance in patients with cGVHD. Dr Blazar describes recent studies in preclinical models that have identified novel B cell–directed agents that may be effective for prevention or treatment of cGVHD. Some B cell–directed therapies have already been tested in patients with cGVHD and Dr Cutler reviews the results of these studies documenting the potential efficacy of this approach. Supported by mechanistic studies in patients and preclinical models, new B cell–directed therapies for cGVHD will now be evaluated in clinical trials
