Entre diplomatie familiale et diplomatie publique

La première mission diplomatique de François Guichardin (1483-1540) se déroula auprès de la Cour de Ferdinand le Catholique entre 1511 et 1513. La République fl orentine l’avait envoyé dans l’espoir de rendre acceptable au roi d’Espagne la fidélité de la ville du lys à la France. La difficile tâche à laquelle le jeune ambassadeur était confronté, rendue encore plus ardue par le changement de régime qui intervint entre-temps à Florence, fut accomplie seulement grâce aux correspondances parallèles qu’il entretint avec son père et ses frères. Ceux-ci réussirent à combler les faiblesses et les réticences de la communication diplomatique officielle et à permettre à leur conjoint d’être bien renseigné sur la situation internationale.The first diplomatic mission of Francesco Guicciardini (1483-1540) took place at Ferdinand the Catholic’s court between 1511 and 1513. The Florentine Republic had sent him to the Spanish king hoping to make the latter accept the fidelity of Florence to France. The highly difficult task of which the young ambassador was in charge, made even more taxing by the changing of the government that took place in the meanwhile at Florence, was accomplished only thanks to the parallel correspondences Francesco kept up with his father and his brother. In fact, they managed to make up for the weakness and the reticence of the official diplomatic communication and to afford their relative to be well-informed about the international situation

"In nessun caso si corre il rischio di sopravvalutare l’importanza del celebre saggio su L’uomo del Guicciardini che nell’ottobre del 1869 Francesco De Sanctis pubblicò nella «Nuova Antologia». E ciò vale tanto per il posto cruciale che esso occupa nella parabola intellettuale di un critico che, giunto ormai alla piena maturità e al definitivo possesso dei suoi talenti interpretativi, grazie al contatto con l’opera dello storico fiorentino stava pervenendo a una decisiva chiarificazione delle proprie prospettive storiografiche; quanto per la storia dell’interpretazione dell’autore che prese a oggetto, nei cui confronti ha esercitato un influsso, schiettamente negativo per quanto praeter intentionem, di singolare tenacia e tale da arrivare fino al nostro presente.
