A REGIONAL COMPARISON OF RISK-EFFICIENT SOYBEAN MARKETING STRATEGIES
Risk-efficient portfolios from a subset of marketing strategies were identified using Target-MOTAD. Portfolios were generated for Illinois, Arkansas, and South Carolina to determine whether regional price and yield characteristics affected the optimal marketing strategy selection during 1972-1985. The results support previous conclusions that the risk borne when following a combination of marketing strategies was less than the risk of any single marketing strategy examined. The results also show that the marketing strategies representing efficient risk-return combinations for a producer in one region were different from the efficient risk-return combinations for a producer in another region. Therefore, generic marketing advice would have produced results less preferred in one region than in another.Marketing,
Decay widths of large-spin mesons from the non-critical string/gauge duality
In this paper, we use the non-critical string/gauge duality to calculate the
decay widths of large-spin mesons. Since it is believed that the string theory
of QCD is not a ten dimensional theory, we expect that the non-critical
versions of ten dimensional black hole backgrounds lead to better results than
the critical ones. For this purpose we concentrate on the confining theories
and consider two different six dimensional black hole backgrounds. We choose
the near extremal AdS6 model and the near extremal KM model to compute the
decay widths of large-spin mesons. Then, we present our results from these two
non-critical backgrounds and compare them together with those from the critical

CFT fusion rules, DHR gauge groups, and CAR algebras
It is demonstrated that several series of conformal field theories, while
satisfying braid group statistics, can still be described in the conventional
setting of the DHR theory, i.e. their superselection structure can be
understood in terms of a compact DHR gauge group. Besides theories with only
simple sectors, these include (the untwisted part of) c=1 orbifold theories and
level two so(N) WZW theories. We also analyze the relation between these models

Solar electric propulsion for Mars transport vehicles
Solar electric propulsion (SEP) is an alternative to chemical and nuclear powered propulsion systems for both piloted and unpiloted Mars transport vehicles. Photovoltaic solar cell and array technologies were evaluated as components of SEP power systems. Of the systems considered, the SEP power system composed of multijunction solar cells in an ENTECH domed fresnel concentrator array had the least array mass and area. Trip times to Mars optimized for minimum propellant mass were calculated. Additionally, a preliminary vehicle concept was designed
On the homology of the Harmonic Archipelago
We calculate the singular homology and \v{C}ech cohomology groups of the
Harmonic archipelago. As a corollary, we prove that this space is not homotopy
equivalent to the Griffiths space. This is interesting in view of Eda's proof
that the first singular homology groups of these spaces are isomorphic
A Lower Bound on List Size for List Decoding
A q-ary error-correcting code C ⊆ {1,2,...,q}n is said to be list decodable to radius ρ with list size L if every Hamming ball of radius ρ contains at most L codewords of C. We prove that in order for a q -ary code to be list-decodable up to radius (1-1/q)(1- ε)n, we must have L = Ω(1/ ε2) . Specifically, we prove that there exists a constant cq > 0 and a function fq such that for small enough ε > 0, if C is list-decodable to radius (1-1/q)(1- ε)n with list size cq/ ε2, then C has at most fq( ε) codewords, independent of n . This result is asymptotically tight (treating q as a constant), since such codes with an exponential (in n ) number of codewords are known for list size L = O(1/ ε2). A result similar to ours is implicit in Blinovsky ( Problems of Information Transmission, 1986) for the binary (q=2) case. Our proof is simpler and works for all alphabet sizes, and provides more intuition for why the lower bound arises.Engineering and Applied Science
Gauge covariance and the fermion-photon vertex in three- and four- dimensional, massless quantum electrodynamics
In the quenched approximation, the gauge covariance properties of three
vertex Ans\"{a}tze in the Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion self energy
are analysed in three- and four- dimensional quantum electrodynamics. Based on
the Cornwall-Jackiw-Tomboulis effective action, it is inferred that the
spectral representation used for the vertex in the gauge technique cannot
support dynamical chiral symmetry breaking. A criterion for establishing
whether a given Ansatz can confer gauge covariance upon the Schwinger-Dyson
equation is presented and the Curtis and Pennington Ansatz is shown to satisfy
this constraint. We obtain an analytic solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equation
for quenched, massless three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics for arbitrary
values of the gauge parameter in the absence of dynamical chiral symmetry
