Gravity gradiometer system for Earth Exploration

We develop a gravity gradiometer (GG) for use on planetary missions to planets like Mars and Jupiter. With some modifications this development is extended to include (airborne) applications for the Dutch exploratory industry. We adapt key technology of the space based GG for the use in an environment with considerable acceleration noise. The major benefit is the considerable decrease in weight and size with the presently used gradiometer systems

Ecological compensation of highway impacts; negotiated trade-off or no-net-loss?

The ecological compensation principle was introduced in the Dutch Structural Scheme for the Rural Areas (1993). The principle aims to enhance the input of natural conservation interests in decision-making on large development projects and to counterbalance the adverse impacts of such projects when implemented. The thesis describes the process of implementing the ecological compensation principle within the Directorate-General of Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat) as initiator of highway projects. Additionally, it has developed a theoretical and practical framework for ecological compensation. Ecological compensation and related issues have been investigated in the different stages of planning, decision-making and realisation of highway projects. The thesis' leading element is the incentive-based character of compensating for impacts according to the Structural Scheme. This implies the parties involved are obliged to reach agreement on finding and realising compensation sites. Besides some specific conditions, there is still no legislation that facilitates the initiatiors' acquisition of lands for compensation purposes.1. Nonlinearities and Effects of Transverse Beam Size in Beam Position Monitors (revised)

The fields produced by a long beam with a given transverse charge distribution in a homogeneous vacuum chamber are studied. Signals induced by a displaced finite-size beam on electrodes of a beam position monitor (BPM) are calculated and compared to those produced by a pencil beam. The non-linearities and corrections to BPM signals due to a finite transverse beam size are calculated for an arbitrary chamber cross section. Simple analytical expressions are given for a few particular transverse distributions of the beam current in a circular or rectangular chamber. Of particular interest is a general proof that in an arbitrary homogeneous chamber the beam-size corrections vanish for any axisymmetric beam current distribution.Comment: REVTeX, 8 pages, 9 figures. Membranes of the invention comprise a hybrid silica film on a organic polymer support. The silica comprises organic bridging groups bound to two or more silicon atoms, in particular at least 1 of said organic bridging groups per 10 silicon atoms. The membranes can be produced by dry chemistry processes, in particular plasma-enhanced vapour deposition of bridged silane precursors, or by wet chemistry involving hydrolysis of the bridged silane precursors.
