In defense of traditional human rights

Author's OriginalIn considering the human rights policies of a sovereign, a functional definition of human rights is necessary. Unfortunately, the Uniform Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) expansively defines human rights by employing a positive rights standard advocated by Jack Donnelly. This expansive definition allows for the infusion of philosophical and political principles relating to justice not shared by all countries and societies. The lack of consensus results in a decreased ability to react swiftly and appropriately to per se human right violations, including genocide and ethnic cleansing. Traditional human rights, or negative rights, are most essential to the definition of human rights in limiting future atrocities assuming a pluralistic society. By defining human rights within the context of traditional negative rights, greater consensus is possible among and between sovereigns allowing prompt action and greater protections. This standard may not serve as a perfect normative theory of global justice. However, the functionality of a traditional human rights approach far outweighs - in human life - the philosophical and political jousting of the global justice questions. This quasi-statist position will be defended employing supporting philosophies of Thomas Hobbes, Maurice Cranston, John Rawls, Thomas Nagel, and Joshua Cohen.Cullen, P. (2010, July). Investigation of the attitudes of normal siblings and of parents toward their mentally retarded family member

    Get PDF
In view of the fact that recent studies have been focusing considerable attention on families that include persons who are mentally retarded, this study was undertaken for the purpose of investigating the attitudes of the normal siblings and the attitudes of the parents toward their mentally retarded family member

Effects of Presenting Normative Alcohol Data on Perceptions of College Drinking Behavior

    Get PDF
Alcohol abuse, often in the form of binge drinking, is a problem that every college campus faces. Many researchers suggest that students believe that their peers drink more alcohol than is actually true, and use such a perception as a justification to drink more alcohol than should be consumed (Perkins, Haines, & Rice, 2005). The purpose of this study is to understand whether presenting normative information on drinking behavior among college students in two different ways (focus on heavy drinking or focus on abstinence) has an effect on the perceptions of drinking behavior

Theodicy problem in the theology of Jurgen Moltmann

The thesis is that a theology which takes suffering to be unjustifiable (of which Moltmann's is the major contemporary example), which can openly accept this situation, is potentially a very major break-through. However, it has to be asked if it has a sustainable understanding of the problem of evilIntroduction: sets out briefly the traditional understanding of the theodicy problem, and also the way in which the thesis is developed. Chapter one looks at the manner in which theodicy can be seen as a natural and necessary upshot of the fact that Christian belief involves certain assertions or claims, Words, if they are to be meaningful, are used in certain ways. Also discussed is an a-theodicist eschatological verification position. I argue that there has to be a way in which we can rationally affirm that the world is worthwhile. Chapter two looks at various theodicies to see how they attempt to make sense of.the world in its relation to the God who is wholly good, and if they are saying things which Christians need to say - or which are incompatible with basic Christian beliefs.Chapter three looks at Moltmann's understanding of the theodicy question, leading to the conclusion that there is a major and potentially deeply problematic departure in interpretation. Chapter four surveys, and then discusses critically, the view of suffering in Theology of HopeChapter five reviews Religion. Revolution and the Future, and Hope and Planning, again in relation to the question of evil. Chapter six assesses the contribution of The Crucified God to Moltmann's understanding of suffering. Chapter seven discusses The Trinity and The Kingdom of God likewise. Chapter eight is a view of crucial aspects of God in Creation and the main-stream theodicy problem.Chapter nine looks at the idea that Moltmann's theologising may be beyond the reach of conventional theodicy debate criteria. I hold that this is not so. Attention then switches to D Z Phillips and his claims that religious language cannot be subjected to classification as right or wrong: my case being the claim that important aspects of Moltmann's treatment of evil and God are incoherent. I disagree with Phillips. There follows the conclusion. Whilst Moltmann brings home the need to think with the deepest seriousness about the problems of suffering, and appears to open up a new theological horizon on the problem of evil, he in the end fails to show how one can legitimately escape the criteria of the classical problem of justification

Extrinsic Control Parameters for Ozone Inactivation of Escherichia Coli Using a Bubble Column

    Get PDF
Aims: To investigate the effect of extrinsic control parameters for ozone inactivation of E. coli in a bubble column. Methods and Results: Ozone inactivation of Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 in Tryptic Soya Broth was examined. The parameters studied included temperature (ambient, 20, 25 and 30°C), exposure time (up to 30 min), gas flow rate (0·03, 0·06, 0·12, 0·25, 0·5 and 0·75 l min−1) and concentration level (five different levels). The efficacy of ozone treatment was a function of the parameters investigated and optimum control parameters of flow rate (0·12 l min−1), temperature (ambient) and ozone concentration (75 μg ml−1) resulted in a td5 (time required to achieve 5 log reduction) of 20 min. Conclusions: Optimum control parameters of gas flow rate, ozone concentration and temperature are reported for E. coli inactivation within a bubble column. Significance and Impact of the Study: In 2001, the FDA approved use of ozone as a direct additive to food and in 2004, issued guidelines for the use of ozone in liquid systems. However, these guidelines highlighted gaps in the literature for ozonation of liquid foods. This study provides useful information regarding optimum extrinsic control parameters for E. coli inactivation in liquid media using a bubble column to ensure microbiological safety

In situ Image Processing and Data Binning Strategy for Particle Engineering Applications

    Get PDF
Crystallization control can be improved through real-time monitoring technologies. Here, a workflow is demonstrated on rapid batch cooling crystallization of L-glutamic acid. First, in situ images were generated using video microscopy sensors and analyzed, by employing a single, rapid macro code to extract particle data descriptors. A binning procedure (over time) was performed, where every data point represented the counts of particles within a specific size or shape range per 100 images. This binning method was found more informative in tracking of the populations compared to whole image averages or individual particle datapoints. This study provides a step-by-step guide towards improving mechanistic modeling, control via feedback, automation, and continuous manufacturing for Industry 4.0
