Testing the Universal Structured Jet Models of Gamma-Ray Bursts by BATSE Observations
Assuming that the observed gamma-ray burst (GRB) rate as a function of
redshift is proportional to a corrected star formation rate, we derive the
empirical distribution of the viewing angles of long BATSE GRBs, , and the distribution of these bursts in the plane of
against redshift, , by using a tight correlation between
) and ). Our results show that
is well fitted by a log-normal distribution centering at with a width of . We test different
universal structured jet models by comparing model predictions with our
empirical results. To make the comparisons reasonable, an "effective"
threshold, which corresponds to the sample selection criteria of the long GRB
sample, is used. We find that the predictions of a two-Gaussian jet model are
roughly consistent with our empirical results. A brief discussion shows that
cosmological effect on the relation does not
significantly affect our results, but sample selection effects on this
relationship might significantly influence our results.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A
Investigations of supernovae and supernova remnants in the era of SKA
Two main physical mechanisms are used to explain supernova explosions:
thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf(Type Ia) and core collapse of a
massive star (Type II and Type Ib/Ic). Type Ia supernovae serve as distance
indicators that led to the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the
Universe. The exact nature of their progenitor systems however remain unclear.
Radio emission from the interaction between the explosion shock front and its
surrounding CSM or ISM provides an important probe into the progenitor star's
last evolutionary stage. No radio emission has yet been detected from Type Ia
supernovae by current telescopes. The SKA will hopefully detect radio emission
from Type Ia supernovae due to its much better sensitivity and resolution.
There is a 'supernovae rate problem' for the core collapse supernovae because
the optically dim ones are missed due to being intrinsically faint and/or due
to dust obscuration. A number of dust-enshrouded optically hidden supernovae
should be discovered via SKA1-MID/survey, especially for those located in the
innermost regions of their host galaxies. Meanwhile, the detection of
intrinsically dim SNe will also benefit from SKA1. The detection rate will
provide unique information about the current star formation rate and the
initial mass function. A supernova explosion triggers a shock wave which expels
and heats the surrounding CSM and ISM, and forms a supernova remnant (SNR). It
is expected that more SNRs will be discovered by the SKA. This may decrease the
discrepancy between the expected and observed numbers of SNRs. Several SNRs
have been confirmed to accelerate protons, the main component of cosmic rays,
to very high energy by their shocks. This brings us hope of solving the
Galactic cosmic ray origin's puzzle by combining the low frequency (SKA) and
very high frequency (Cherenkov Telescope Array: CTA) bands' observations of
SNRs.Comment: To be published in: "Advancing Astrophysics with the Square Kilometre

Text2QR: Harmonizing Aesthetic Customization and Scanning Robustness for Text-Guided QR Code Generation
In the digital era, QR codes serve as a linchpin connecting virtual and
physical realms. Their pervasive integration across various applications
highlights the demand for aesthetically pleasing codes without compromised
scannability. However, prevailing methods grapple with the intrinsic challenge
of balancing customization and scannability. Notably, stable-diffusion models
have ushered in an epoch of high-quality, customizable content generation. This
paper introduces Text2QR, a pioneering approach leveraging these advancements
to address a fundamental challenge: concurrently achieving user-defined
aesthetics and scanning robustness. To ensure stable generation of aesthetic QR
codes, we introduce the QR Aesthetic Blueprint (QAB) module, generating a
blueprint image exerting control over the entire generation process.
Subsequently, the Scannability Enhancing Latent Refinement (SELR) process
refines the output iteratively in the latent space, enhancing scanning
robustness. This approach harnesses the potent generation capabilities of
stable-diffusion models, navigating the trade-off between image aesthetics and
QR code scannability. Our experiments demonstrate the seamless fusion of visual
appeal with the practical utility of aesthetic QR codes, markedly outperforming
prior methods. Codes are available at \url{https://github.com/mulns/Text2QR}Comment: Accepted by CVPR 202
Magneto hydrodynamic simulations of the supernova remnant G1.9+0.3
The youngest Galactic supernova remnant G1.9+0.3 shows a discrete feature
between its radio and X-ray morphologies. The observed radio morphology
features a single maximum in the north, while the X-ray observation shows two
opposite 'ears' on the east and west sides. Using 3D magneto hydrodynamical
simulations, we investigate the formation of the discrete feature of the
remnant. We have tested different parameters for better simulation and
reproduced similar discrete features under an environment with density gradient
and an environment with clump, which provides a possible explanation of the
observation
Gene cloning of phenolic acid decarboxylase from Bacillus subtilis and expression in top-fermenting yeast strain
Phenolic acid decarboxylase (PADC) gene, encoding phenolic acid decarboxylase, was cloned from Bacillus subtilis and ligated with a shuttle vector YEp352 to generate a novel plasmid YPADC. By analysis of sequencing and the restriction endonuclease digestion, the validity of construction was proved. Subsequently, the new vector was successfully transformed into wild-type top-fermenting yeast strain W303-1A; the mutant yeast strain W303+padc was obtained, which was tested on the laboratoryscale mashing and fermentation experiments. At the end of fermentation, the results showed an obvious increase of 4-vinylguaiacol content in top-fermented beers brewed with mutant yeasts. The final 4-vinylguaiacol concentration obtained with wild-type and mutant yeasts was 1.20 and 1.70mg/l, respectively. Additionally, the level of esters produced by the mutant strain was higher than that of the wild-type; there were therefore a marked clove-like and ester aroma in top-fermented beers brewed with the former. However, no evident differences were found in brewing characteristic between wild-type and mutant strains, especially the ability of utilizing fermentable sugar and reducing diacetyl. Taken together, these approaches indicated the possibility of cloning PADC gene and enhancing the concentration of 4-vinylguaiacol in top-fermented beers.size.Keywords: Clone, phenolic acid decarboxylase, top-fermenting yeast, 4-vinylguaiacolAfrican Journal of Biotechnology Vol. 9(33), pp. 5284-5291, 16 August, 201
Spectral reflectance reconstruction based on wideband multi-illuminant imaging and a modified particle swarm optimization algorithm
A method for spectral reflectance factor reconstruction based on wideband multiilluminant
imaging was proposed, using a programmable LED lighting system and modified
Bare Bones Particle Swarm Optimization algorithms. From a set of 16 LEDs with different
spectral power distributions, nine light sources with correlated color temperatures in the range of
1924 K - 15746 K, most of them daylight simulators, were generated. Samples from three color
charts (X-Rite ColorChecker Digital SG, SCOCIE ScoColor paint chart, and SCOCIE ScoColor
textile chart), were captured by a color industrial camera under the nine light sources, and used
in sequence as training and/or testing colors. The spectral reconstruction models achieved under
multi-illuminant imaging were trained and tested using the canonical Bare Bones Particle Swarm
Optimization and its proposed modifications, along with six additional and commonly used
algorithms. The impacts of different illuminants, illuminant combinations, algorithms, and
training colors on reconstruction accuracy were studied comprehensively. The results indicated
that training colors covering larger regions of color space give more accurate reconstructions
of spectral reflectance factors, and combinations of two illuminants with a large difference
of correlated color temperature achieve more than twice the accuracy of that under a single
illuminant. Specifically, the average reconstruction error by the method proposed in this paper for
patches from two color charts under A+ D90 light sources was 0.94 and 1.08 CIEDE2000 color
difference units. The results of the experiment also confirmed that some reconstruction algorithms
are unsuitable for predicting spectral reflectance factors from multi-illuminant images due to the
complexity of optimization problems and insufficient accuracy. The proposed reconstruction
method has many advantages, such as being simple in operation, with no requirement of prior
knowledge, and easy to implement in non-contact color measurement and color reproduction
devices.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación and Agencia Estatal de Investigación (PID2022-138031NB-I00/SRA/

Intravaginal cytomegalovirus (CMV) challenge elicits maternal viremia and results in congenital transmission in a guinea pig model
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study was to compare intravaginal (ivg) and subcutaneous (sc) administration of the guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) in pregnant and non-pregnant guinea pigs. These studies tested the hypotheses that ivg infection would elicit immune responses, produce maternal viremia, and lead to vertical transmission, with an efficiency similar to the traditionally employed sc route.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Four groups of age- and size-matched guinea pigs were studied. Two groups were pregnant, and two groups were not pregnant. Animals received 5x105 plaque-forming units (PFU) of a GPCMV reconstituted from an infectious bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) construct containing the full-length GPCMV genome. Seroconversion was compared by IgG ELISA, and viremia (DNAemia) was monitored by PCR. In both pregnant and non-pregnant animals, sc inoculation resulted in significantly higher serum ELISA titers than ivg inoculation at 8 and 12 weeks post-infection. Patterns of viremia (DNAemia) were similar in animals inoculated by either sc or ivg route. However, in pregnant guinea pigs, animals inoculated by both routes experienced an earlier onset of DNAemia than did non-pregnant animals. Neither the percentage of dead pups nor the percentage of GPCMV positive placentas differed by inoculation route.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>In the guinea pig model of congenital CMV infection, the ivg route is as efficient at causing congenital infection as the conventional but non-physiologic sc route. This finding could facilitate future experimental evaluation of vaccines and antiviral interventions in this highly relevant animal model.</p
Analysis of the nucleotide sequence of the guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) genome
In this report we describe the genomic sequence of guinea pig cytomegalovirus (GPCMV) assembled from a tissue culture-derived bacterial artificial chromosome clone, plasmid clones of viral restriction fragments, and direct PCR sequencing of viral DNA. The GPCMV genome is 232,678 bp, excluding the terminal repeats, and has a GC content of 55%. A total of 105 open reading frames (ORFs) of \u3e 100 amino acids with sequence and/or positional homology to other CMV ORFs were annotated. Positional and sequence homologs of human cytomegalovirus open reading frames UL23 through UL122 were identified. Homology with other cytomegaloviruses was most prominent in the central ~60% of the genome, with divergence of sequence and lack of conserved homologs at the respective genomic termini. Of interest, the GPCMV genome was found in many cases to bear stronger phylogenetic similarity to primate CMVs than to rodent CMVs. The sequence of GPCMV should facilitate vaccine and pathogenesis studies in this model of congenital CMV infection
Bacterial Artificial Chromosome Clones of Viruses Comprising the Towne Cytomegalovirus Vaccine
Bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) clones have proven invaluable for genetic manipulation of herpesvirus genomes. BAC cloning can also be useful for capturing representative genomes that comprise a viral stock or mixture. The Towne live attenuated cytomegalovirus vaccine was developed in the 1970s by serial passage in cultured fibroblasts. Although its safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy have been evaluated in nearly a thousand human subjects, the vaccine itself has been little studied. Instead, genetic composition and in vitro growth properties have been inferred from studies of laboratory stocks that may not always accurately represent the viruses that comprise the vaccine. Here we describe the use of BAC cloning to define the genotypic and phenotypic properties of viruses from the Towne vaccine. Given the extensive safety history of the Towne vaccine, these BACs provide a logical starting point for the development of next-generation rationally engineered cytomegalovirus vaccines
