Care concept in medical and nursing students' descriptions: philosophical approach and implications for medical education
Introduction. Care is seen as something that is peculiar to the medical sciences but its meaning and status for physicians and nurses differs. Objectives. The aim of this research was to learn how nursing and medical students understand and define care, and how their definition and views on their practice of caring change as they advance through their studies. Material and methods. The study was conducted among two groups of students: before and after their first practicum (n=102). Analysis of the students' answers was carried out using Colaizzi's phenomenological descriptive methodology, which means that a qualitative approach was used. Results. The qualitative analysis shows that the medical and nursing students define care in the same way, using 9 main categories: compassion, commitment, competence, confidence, conscience, communication, patience, courage and support. The nursing students viewed their caring to be within both practical and emotional dimensions and this was a core feature of their identity as nurses. Medical students, on the other hand, viewed the practical dimension of care as an additional activity. All the students in the study underlined the importance of having time to care and showed that, for them, 'time' in this context has a moral meaning. What was interesting to the research team centered on the initial attitudes to 'caring' from both medical and nursing students. Conclusions. We found that students of both nursing and medicine do not begin their studies with different attitudes and concepts of care. However, after their initial exposure to practical placements a process begins which forges different identities around the concept of care. This implies trends in the division of professional roles during their initial education
Health-promoting activities performed by nurses for patients with COPD
Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth most common cause of death in the world. The significance of health promotion is usually emphasised among the activities which nurses should undertake in relation to patients suffering from COPD. The aim of the study was to analyse the frequency and types of health promotion activities undertaken by nurses in relation to patients suffering from COPD.Material and methods: The diagnostic survey with the use of a questionnaire constructed by the authors was applied in the study. Data collected in 2008 among 132 nurses (100%) working in outpatient and hospital healthcare sectors in Poland were quantitatively analysed. Results: Nurses working in hospitals more frequently took part in diagnosing COPD (62.30%) than those working in outpatient establishments did (33.40%). Anti-smoking counselling was performed by 69% of respondents. Nurses very rarely used professional tools for the measurement of the level of nicotine addiction (6%) or the level of motivation to fight the addiction (4%). Activities in terms of health education carried out on a patient with COPD were declared by 66.67% of primary care nurses, and by 76.81% from hospitals. The nurses surveyed did not perform any monitoring of their recommendations and did not assess their effectiveness. Participation in interdisciplinary pulmonary rehabilitation programmes was declared by 9.53% of outpatient sector nurses and by 40.58% of nurses from hospitals. Conclusions: Nurses’ activities in relation to patients suffering from COPD have a mainly educational nature, but unfortunately they are casual, occasional and unplanned. Planned and formal inclusion of nurses in the process of realisation of health promotion programs for patients with COPD is recommended, i.e. by planning funds for the tasks which can be performed by them. More attention should be payed to professional training of nurses for realisation of the process of health education, especially anti-smoking intervention
Empiryczna identyfikacja pielęgnowania na podstawie związku z praktyką pielęgniarską
Introduction. Nursing is the area of theoretical and practical activities based on the results of scientific studies and philosophical assumptions
emerge in care process. This domain of nursing performance systematically changes what is determined to some extend by the
development of nursing practice.
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to present the core of care process seen at the operational perspective from the point of view
of nurses who work at hospital wards with paying extraordinary attention on concern in caring.
Material and methods. The study performance was conducted by the use of diagnostic survey method with self-constructed questionnaire.
The content of answers was taken out for analysis related to the question “What is care process in your opinion?”. Declarations of
participant conditioned by graphic presentation of five face expression drawn into the structure of Delighted–Terrible Faces (D-T) Scale
(Andrews and Withey 1974, 1976) were also analysed. The task for participants was to project professional nursing activity towards patient
with particular face expression after one minute exposition. The study consisted of 324 nurses who worked at hospitals in Lublin.
Results. The analysis of collected data in the area of defining care process allowed to select the following categories of answers: groups of
care activities, reception of nursing care and detailed care activities. The highly ranked activities in the area of nursing performance were:
helping (33.33%), care taking (25.9%) and supporting (13.89%). In accordance to respondents caring understood as nursing performance
consists in education of patients (8.95%), helping with self-care activities (6.79%) and hygienic activities (5.86%) that are taken towards sick
people (59.57%), all care receivers (14.81%) and healthy people (9.26%). The deeper analysis of the core of care process was made on the
basis of visual exposition of faces of patients that showed independently from face expression proposed activities were almost the same
— conversation with patient, diagnosing condition of patient and it complete understanding of caring.
Conclusions. Using different ways of cognition of the area of care process in practice allowed to discover the hidden activities of nurse,
mostly of caring nature.
Nursing Topics 2011; 19 (2): 244–252Wstęp. Pielęgniarstwo jest to obszar teoretyczno-praktycznego działania opartego na wynikach badań naukowych i założeniach filozoficznych
przejawiających się w pielęgnowaniu, ulegającym systematycznym zmianom determinowanym w znaczącym stopniu rozwojem samej
praktyki pielęgniarskiej.
Cel pracy.
Materiał i metody. W realizacji badań wykorzystano metodę sondażu diagnostycznego z autorskim kwestionariuszem ankiety. Do analizy
graficznej 5 wyrazów twarzy stanowiących strukturę Delighted – Terrible Faces (D-T) Scale (Andrews and Withey 1974, 1976). Zadaniem
Wnioski. Zastosowanie zróżnicowanych sposobów poznania obszaru pielęgnowania funkcjonującego w praktyce pozwoliło na ujawnienie
ukrytych działań podejmowanych przez pielęgniarkę głównie o charakterze opiekuńczym w ramach opieki pielęgniarskiej.

The chosen pedagogical and ethical aspects in the care of elderly people
wieku. Główne zadania współczesnej gerontologii nakierowane na kształtowanie prawidłowych postaw w stosunku do osób
w podeszłym wieku oscylują wokół: 1) przygotowania młodych pokoleń do wyzwań starości, ponieważ każda jednostka ludzka stoi przed
Problemy Pielęgniarstwa 2010; 18 (4): 490-496The ongoing demographic changes concerning the increase of human life force specialists of various scientific disciplines, especially social and
medical sciences, to reorganised their view of a human being of advanced age. The crucial issues of the contemporary gerontology are addressed
on the development of proper attitudes towards the elderly people and fluctuate around: 1) preparation of the young generation for challenges of
the old age as every individual faces the entrance into the "third age" world. So, the affirmation of the active and creative ageing phase should
become the main goal of gerontology and the work for achieving it should start as early as it is possible; 2) change in young people’s attitude
towards the persons of advanced age throughout the appreciation of their life experience, tradition and identity from the older generation.
The aim of the paper is to review the contemporary gerontological tendencies which can be used in care of the older patient with consideration
of the newest pedagogical concepts and ethical basis in this area.
The analysed issues are focused on description of biological and psycho-social theories of ageing which influenced the subjective feeling
concerning the quality of life. As a rule together with ageing process the self-reliance of the elderly decreases what is connected with the
need of the enhanced care. The level of self-reliance of the people of advanced age depends in great measure on their attitude towards the
old age which should be build throughout the entire life. The main aim of health education towards the old age described as long, healthy
and active elderly phase of human life and positive attitude was illustrated in the study. Apart from pedagogical indicators of gerontological
care the ethical aspects of the elderly were pointed out which are based on the latest British patterns in this scientific field.

Comparative analysis of the chosen elements of nursing educational systems on the bachelor level in Poland and Finland
Cel pracy. Celem niniejszego opracowania była analiza porównawcza teoretycznych założeń funkcjonowania systemów pielęgniarskich
szkolnictwa wyższego na poziomie licencjatu w dwóch wybranych instytucjach edukacyjnych w Polsce i Finlandii. Analiza dotyczyła charakterystyki
celów kształcenia, programów nauczania oraz realizowanych treści w dwóch reprezentatywnych instytucjach edukacji pielęgniarskiej,
czyli Wydziału Pielęgniarstwa i Nauk o Zdrowiu Uniwersytetu Medycznego w Lublinie i Wydziału Opieki Zdrowotnej i Nauk
Społecznych Politechniki Mikkeli w Savonlinnie.
Materiał i metody. W opracowaniu zastosowano metodę monografii pedagogicznej oraz technikę analizy dokumentów, a następnie dokonano
zabiegów komparatystycznych z uwzględnieniem założeń pedagogiki porównawczej. Miało to na celu wykrycie podobieństw
i różnic analizowanych systemów edukacyjnych.
Wyniki i wnioski.
ofercie edukacji.
Problemy Pielęgniarstwa 2011; 19 (3): 273–281Introduction. The dynamics of changes in the modern world influences the increase of human needs in different lives domains. There is
a constant necessity to fulfill them and it should be done by modification and development of education that plays the important role in
learning about reality and understanding it in the appropriate way. It is especially important for nursing education for fulfillment of the
requirements of potential patients/clients. The ideas for changes are usually drawn on the experience of the other countries what is aimed
at optimising the national educational system. To do it, comparative analysis of educational systems is very functional. Its aim is to identify
some positive and some negative points of changes being introduced in education and eventual corrections.
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to comparatively analyse the theoretical assumptions of functioning the higher nursing educational
systems on the bachelor level in two chosen educational institutions in Poland and Finland. The analysis concerns on the characteristics
of learning goals, educational curricula and contents of education in two representative institutions of nursing education: Faculty of Nursing
and Health Sciences, The Medical University of Lublin and Institute of Health Care and Social Sciences, Mikkeli Polytechnics in Savonlinna.
Material and methods. The method of pedagogical monograph and the technique of document analysis were used in the study. Next, the
comparative procedures were implemented with using the assumptions given by comparative pedagogy to aim the similarities and differences
between the analysed educational systems.
Results and conclusions. The study showed the joint elements for both nursing educational systems and significantly different ones in the
educational offer in both countries.

The importance of personal values and symbols of happiness among vocationally active nurses
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono przy użyciu standaryzowanej Listy Wartości Osobistych (LWO) według Juczyńskiego. Zakres
Wyniki. W badanej grupie 96% (n = 192) stanowiły kobiety, a 4% (n = 8) mężczyźni. Wyniki badań skali LWO w kategoriach wartości osobistych
wskazują, że pielęgniarki najwyżej cenią następujące wartości: dobre zdrowie, sprawność fizyczną i psychiczną, miłość i przyjaźń, wiedzę
i mądrość, inteligencję i bystrość umysłu oraz radość i zadowolenie. Analiza statystyczna wykazała istotną korelację między inteligencją
i bystrością umysłu (r = 0,15; p = 0,04) oraz wiedzą i mądrością (r = –0,21, p = 0,003) a rolą symboli pielęgniarskich w codziennym życiu.
Wnioski.
Personal values of human being and expressed symbols of happiness give the meaning for existence, create life and define style.
The hierarchy of personal values among nurses should be coherent with determinants of their vocational roles and social expectations of clients.
Aim of the study. The aim of the study was to illustrate the range of personal values and symbols of happiness among the group of working
nurses and determine differences of their preference in dependence on socio-vocational features.
Material and methods. The study was conducted by the use of the standardised tool by Juczyński called List of Personal Values (LPV). The
range of study also focuses on personal data questions and questions related to opinion of nurses about meaning of nursing symbols. The
group of 200 nurses working at a few hospitals in the city of Lublin took part in the study.
Results. The group of surveyed nurses constituted of 96% (n = 192) of women and 4% (n = 8) of men. The results of LPV scale related to
categories of personal values showed that the most important values declared by nurses were: good health, physical and psychological
capacity, love and friendship, knowledge and wisdom, intelligence and cleverness, joy and satisfaction. Statistical analysis proved significant
correlation between intelligence and cleverness (r = 0.15; p = 0.04) and knowledge and wisdom (r = –0.21; p = 0.003) and meaning of
nursing symbols in everyday life.
Conclusions. The categories of personal values that were pointed out by nurses, such as: love and friendship as well as intelligence and
cleverness had statistically significant correlation with age, years of working and opinion of surveyed nurses connected with meaning of
nursing symbols.

Nurse’s educational function in reference to patients in surgical ward
Dobra edukacja informacyjna kierowana bezpośrednio do chorego
powoduje wzrost satysfakcji przy minimalnym wkładzie finansowym. Z kolej satysfakcja pacjenta wpływa na ocenę jakości usług
medycznych realizowanych przez poszczególne placówki służby zdrowia. Edukacja pacjenta to proces kolejno następujących, powiązanych
Zatem celem edukacji
zdrowotnej pacjenta na oddziale chirurgicznym będzie wyposażenie go w wiedzę i umiejętności z zakresu: samokontroli, samoopieki
Materiał i metody. Badania przeprowadzono w 2005 roku na Oddziale Chirurgii Ogólnej i Urazowej Samodzielnego Publicznego Zakładu
Opieki Zdrowotnej w Kraśniku. Materiał badawczy zebrano na podstawie metody sondażu diagnostycznego, wykorzystując trzy autorskie
kwestionariusze ankiety. Objęto nimi 200 pacjentów i 60 pielęgniarek. Zebrane dane empiryczne poddano analizie opisowej i statystycznej.
Wyniki i wnioski.
dającą wymierny efekt profilaktyczny i prewencyjny. Reasumując, można powiedzieć, że funkcja edukacyjna pielęgniarek chirurgicznych
jest realizowana w sposób zadowalający.
Problemy Pielęgniarstwa 2010; 18 (4): 420-428Introduction. Educational activities performed by a nurse during ongoing changes in health care service concerning economic conditions
should be calculated as one of the most effective area for medical institutions. Proper education directed to a patient causes the increase of
satisfaction with a little financial contribution. On the other hand satisfaction of a patient influences the assessment of the quality of medical
service realised by a particular institution of health sector. Education of a patient is the process of the followed in succession and logically
connected activities which are performed to change patient’s behaviour. The range of changes should be defined in the course of formulating
the aim of education, which significantly influences attitudes, beliefs and motives of a patient. So, the aim of health education of
a patient at the surgical ward is to acquaint patient with knowledge and skills concerning: self-control and self-caring what is the essential
factor for disease development, its consequences and restoring to health.
The aim of the study. Considering the complexity of problems at surgical ward and health consulting the aim of the study was to show to
what degree the educational function of a nurse is performed in reference to patients from surgical ward.
Material and methods. The research was conducted in 2005 at the Ward of General Surgery and Traumatology in the Public Hospital in
Kraśnik. The research material was collected by the method of diagnostic survey with a use of the three self-constructed questionnaires. 200
patients and 60 nurses took part in the study. The collected data were statistically and descriptively analysed.
Results and conclusions. The results have allowed to recognise problems that a nurse should consider when planning the educational
activities, individual and group ones, both. The analysis of material shows that knowledge of the surgical ward patients about healthy
behaviour stays at the basic level. There is no significant relation noticed among the respondents’ opinions between healthy behaviour of
patients and existed diseases. The majority of patients do not connect their present lifestyles with the disease they have. More than 80% of
them pointed out that information given by nursing personnel were sufficient for them. On the other hand, nurses assess their educational
activities as something needful and causing notable prophylactic and preventive effect. Summing up it might be emphasized that educational
function of surgical nurses is performed at the satisfactory level.

Theoretical foundations of nursing practice in Poland
This authors of this column explore the use of nursing theory in Poland. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest study was conducted to explore what, if any nursing theories were used by nurses in Poland, and if an education program on nursing theory increased the use of nursing theory. The study foundthat while there were discrepancies between the nurses\u27 theoretical knowledge base and their use of these theories in practice, there is evidence of the use of the ideas and theory of Nightingale, Orem, and Henderson in nursing practice in Poland
