Brief Report: Young Adult Women, Sexting, and Risky Sexual Behaviors
The present study explored associations between sexually explicit text messaging (sexting), social media use, and engagement in risky sexual behaviors among young adult women to determine whether online sexting and social media activity was associated with real-world sexual behaviors. Participants completed a self-administered anonymous, online survey that included 66 questions assessing demographic information, use of technology, sexting activity, and sexual behaviors. A greater proportion of participants reported sexting than in previous studies and results indicate sexting is used to maintain intimate relationships online. Results also suggest that, for young women, social media and sexting facilitate alternative intimate communication, without physical intimacy. As interactions in online settings become more common within intimate and committed relationships, attitudes toward conventional, unconventional, and riskier sexual behaviors may also become more positive. Thus, present findings are valuable for understanding technology’s role in young adult women’s sexual behaviors
Storytelling and Racial Identity: How First-Generation Students of Color Navigate Their Identities at Predominately White Institutions
Utilizing the Narrative Paradigm (Fisher, 1984) and thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006) the present study seeks to explore and further understand the ways in which first-generation students of color navigate, and thus make meaning, of their race and class identities at a Predominantly White Institution (PWI). Through qualitative interviews with 14 first-generation students of color (henceforth, FGSOC), themes that emerged included: (1) being used to “it”, (2) financial differences cause a clash with belonging, and (3) cultural spaces bring welcoming feelings. Findings were consistent with previous research regarding barriers faced by first-generation students of color. The current study adds to the growing body of research on intersectionality within the Communication discipline. Theoretical and practical implications are offered. Study limitations and directions for further research are discussed
Using Formative Research and Audience-Centric Intelligence to Develop the #JustBe Digital Magazine: An mHealth Strategy to Improve Adolescent Sexual Health
Digital strategies may help to overcome challenges in providing contraception education to overlooked and key sub-populations (older teens, ethnic minority youth, LGBTQ youth, high school dropouts and males). However, many current digital strategies are not culturally specific and often have limited information on the most effective contraceptive methods. In this article, we describe the preliminary steps used to develop #JustBe, a user-centered digital strategy for ethnic minority older youth and young adults with a specific focus contraception, sexual health, consent, and healthy relationships. Technology-based strategies such as #JustBe offer advantages over traditional face-to-face methods by utilizing a confidential way to retrieve sexual health information that may be sensitive and potentially embarrassing. Questions still remain regarding the feasibility and long-term effects of mobile health interventions for contraception use
broncopulmonar. To determine if caffeine treatment prevents the development of
bronchopulmonary dysplasia in newborns with extremely low birth weight in the
Belén Hospital of Trujillo in the period between January 2014- June 2020.
Material and method: It is an analytical, observational, retrospective cohort
study; in which clinical histories of patients with extremely low birth weight were
reviewed between the period of January 2014- June 2020 in the Belén Hospital
of Trujillo. The sample consisted of 144 newborns with extremely low birth weight,
of which 85 received caffeine treatment and 59 did not receive caffeine treatment,
respecting the selection criteria. For statistical analysis, Pearson's Chi-Square
test was used for qualitative variables and T-tests for quantitative variables. The
statistics used were relative risk (RR) and a 95% confidence interval.
Results: It was found that 61.2% of the patients who received caffeine and 71.2%
of those who did not receive caffeine developed bronchopulmonary dysplasia;
this difference was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Although the patients who
received caffeine had a less than 14% risk of developing bronchopulmonary
dysplasia, this percentage is not significant (RR: 0.86; 95% CI: 0.68-1.09).
Conclusion: In the extremely low birth weight neonate population, caffeine
citrate does not prevent the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.Tesi
