Assembling Micron/Nanoscale Electronic Components using Optoelectronic Tweezers
The aim of this work is to develop a new method with the potential to revolutionise the process of assembling electronic components into circuits. We aim to produce a step change in the size of the smallest components that can be handled from the current smallest standard component size of 400×200 microns (0402 metric) down to components a few microns across and even nanostructured components (based upon graphene, nanowires or nanotubes, for example). This will be accomplished by developing a radically new assembly strategy based on a touch-less manipulation technique known as optoelectronic tweezers (OET). We have demonstrated the use of OET to manipulate conductive silver nanowires into different patterns. A proof-ofconcept demonstration was also made to quantify the feasibility of using OET to manipulate silver nanowires to form a conductive metal path between two electrodes
Proficiency testing of laboratories for paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins in shellfish by QUASIMEME: A review
AbstractParalytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins are some of the most toxic substances known to man and consumption of shellfish containing these naturally-occurring neurotoxins can lead to a range of different symptoms including death in extreme cases. It is imperative therefore, to implement robust shellfish monitoring programs to minimise the possibility of contaminated product reaching the marketplace. To improve the quality assurance of these programs, QUASIMEME, the proficiency test provider added to its scope PSP toxins in shellfish. Since 2009, six proficiency testing exercises have been delivered by QUASIMEME with a total of thirty-four different laboratories submitting data using a range of different methods. These include animal and antibody based assays, together with High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) techniques using post and pre-column oxidation and more recently LC-MS/MS methodologies.Data from these exercises is presented and laboratory performance is assessed to determine any changes in overall performance over the six rounds, together with any potential method-related performance issues. The data showed the improvement of laboratories over the six exercises with between laboratory CV% values decreasing from an average of 39% in the first year to 22% in 2014 and the average percentage of participants receiving satisfactory z-scores increasing from 50% in 2009 to over 66% in 2014

Ongoing Laboratory Performance Study on Chemical Analysis of Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Compounds in Three Aquatic Passive Samplers
The quality of chemical analysis is an important aspect of passive sampling-based environmental assessments. The present study reports on a proficiency testing program for the chemical analysis of hydrophobic organic compounds in silicone and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) passive samplers and hydrophilic compounds in polar organic chemical integrative samplers. The median between-laboratory coefficients of variation (CVs) of hydrophobic compound concentrations in the polymer phase were 33% (silicone) and 38% (LDPE), similar to the CVs obtained in four earlier rounds of this program. The median CV over all rounds was 32%. Much higher variabilities were observed for hydrophilic compound concentrations in the sorbent: 50% for the untransformed data and a factor of 1.6 after log transformation. Limiting the data to the best performing laboratories did not result in less variability. Data quality for hydrophilic compounds was only weakly related to the use of structurally identical internal standards and was unrelated to the choice of extraction solvent and extraction time. Standard deviations of the aqueous concentration estimates for hydrophobic compound sampling by the best performing laboratories were 0.21 log units for silicone and 0.27 log units for LDPE (factors of 1.6 to 1.9). The implications are that proficiency testing programs may give more realistic estimates of uncertainties in chemical analysis than within-laboratory quality control programs and that these high uncertainties should be taken into account in environmental assessments
Valganciclovir for suppression of human herpesvirus-8 replication: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover trial.
BACKGROUND: Human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8) replication is critical in the induction and maintenance of Kaposi sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and some cases of Castleman disease. In vitro and observational studies suggest that ganciclovir inhibits HHV-8 replication, but no randomized clinical trials have been conducted. METHODS: A total of 26 men infected with HHV-8 were randomized to receive 8 weeks of valganciclovir administered orally (900 mg once per day) or 8 weeks of placebo administered orally. After a 2-week washout period, participants in each group received the study drug they had not yet taken (either valganciclovir or placebo), for 8 additional weeks. Oral swab samples were collected daily during the study, and HHV-8 and CMV DNA were quantified by real-time PCR. RESULTS: A total of 16 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive men and 10 HIV-negative men enrolled in and completed the study. Of the 3,439 swab samples that participants had been expected to provide, 3029 (88%) were available for analysis. HHV-8 was detected on 44% of swabs collected from participants who were receiving placebo, compared with 23% of swabs collected from participants who were receiving valganciclovir (relative risk [RR], 0.54 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 0.33-0.90]; P = .02). Valganciclovir reduced oropharyngeal shedding of cytomegalovirus by 80% (RR, 0.20 [95% CI, 0.08-0.48]; P < .001). Shedding of HHV-8 and shedding of cytomegalovirus were independent. Hematologic, renal, or hepatic toxicities were no more common among participants who received the active drug, compared with those who received placebo, though participants who received valganciclovir reported more days of diarrhea. CONCLUSIONS: Valganciclovir administered orally once per day is well tolerated and significantly reduces the frequency and quantity of HHV-8 replication

Laboratory Testing of Bulk Vitrified Low-Activity Waste Forms to Support the 2005 Integrated Disposal Facility Performance Assessment
The purpose of this report is to document the results from laboratory testing of the bulk vitri-fied (BV) waste form that was conducted in support of the 2005 integrated disposal facility (IDF) performance assessment (PA). Laboratory testing provides a majority of the key input data re-quired to assess the long-term performance of the BV waste package with the STORM code. Test data from three principal methods, as described by McGrail et al. (2000a; 2003a), are dis-cussed in this testing report including the single-pass flow-through test (SPFT) and product con-sistency test (PCT). Each of these test methods focuses on different aspects of the glass corrosion process. See McGrail et al. (2000a; 2003a) for additional details regarding these test methods and their use in evaluating long-term glass performance. In addition to evaluating the long-term glass performance, this report discusses the results and methods used to provided a recommended best estimate of the soluble fraction of 99Tc that can be leached from the engineer-ing-scale BV waste package. These laboratory tests are part of a continuum of testing that is aimed at improving the performance of the BV waste package
NASA SpaceCube Next-Generation Artificial-Intelligence Computing for STP-H9-SCENIC on ISS
Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) capabilities have seen an exponential increase in interest from academia and industry that can be a disruptive, transformative development for future missions. Specifically, AI/ML concepts for edge computing can be integrated into future missions for autonomous operation, constellation missions, and onboard data analysis. However, using commercial AI software frameworks onboard spacecraft is challenging because traditional radiation-hardened processors and common spacecraft processors cannot provide the necessary onboard processing capability to effectively deploy complex AI models. Advantageously, embedded AI microchips being developed for the mobile market demonstrate remarkable capability and follow similar size, weight, and power constraints that could be imposed on a space-based system. Unfortunately, many of these devices have not been qualified for use in space. Therefore, Space Test Program - Houston 9 - SpaceCube Edge-Node Intelligent Collaboration (STP-H9-SCENIC) will demonstrate inflight, cutting-edge AI applications on multiple space-based devices for next-generation onboard intelligence. SCENIC will characterize several embedded AI devices in a relevant space environment and will provide NASA and DoD with flight heritage data and lessons learned for developers seeking to enable AI/ML on future missions. Finally, SCENIC also includes new CubeSat form-factor GPS and SDR cards for guidance and navigation
Variability in the Dynamics of Mortality and Immobility Responses of Freshwater Arthropods Exposed to Chlorpyrifos
The species sensitivity distribution (SSD) concept is an important probabilistic tool for environmental risk assessment (ERA) and accounts for differences in species sensitivity to different chemicals. The SSD model assumes that the sensitivity of the species included is randomly distributed. If this assumption is violated, indicator values, such as the 50% hazardous concentration, can potentially change dramatically. Fundamental research, however, has discovered and described specific mechanisms and factors influencing toxicity and sensitivity for several model species and chemical combinations. Further knowledge on how these mechanisms and factors relate to toxicologic standard end points would be beneficial for ERA. For instance, little is known about how the processes of toxicity relate to the dynamics of standard toxicity end points and how these may vary across species. In this article, we discuss the relevance of immobilization and mortality as end points for effects of the organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos on 14 freshwater arthropods in the context of ERA. For this, we compared the differences in response dynamics during 96 h of exposure with the two end points across species using dose response models and SSDs. The investigated freshwater arthropods vary less in their immobility than in their mortality response. However, differences in observed immobility and mortality were surprisingly large for some species even after 96 h of exposure. As expected immobility was consistently the more sensitive end point and less variable across the tested species and may therefore be considered as the relevant end point for population of SSDs and ERA, although an immobile animal may still potentially recover. This is even more relevant because an immobile animal is unlikely to survive for long periods under field conditions. This and other such considerations relevant to the decision-making process for a particular end point are discussed
