    Designing a dexterous reconfigurable packaging system for flexible automation

    This paper presents a design for a reconfigurable packaging system that can handle cartons of different shape and sizes and is amenable to ever changing demands of packaging industries for perfumery and cosmetic products. The system takes structure of a multi-fingered robot hand, which can provide fine motions, and dexterous manipulation capability that may be required in a typical packaging-assembly line. The paper outlines advanced modeling and simulation undertaken to design the packaging system and discusses the experimental work carried out. The new packaging system is based on the principle of reconfigurability, that shows adaptability to simple as well as complex carton geometry. The rationale of developing such a system is presented with description of its human equivalent. The hardware and software implementations are also discussed together with directions for future research

    Photoelasticity based dynamic tactile sensor

    The paper presents design, construction and testing of a photoelasticity based dynamic sensor which is capable of detecting slip as well as providing normal force information. Starting with investigations into mechanism of slip, an approximate model of the sensor has been developed. This model explains the design improvements necessary to provide continuous signal during slip. The theoretical model also helps identify various sensor parameters to characterize the sensor. The developed sensor has been compared with other existing sensors and the experimental results from the sensor have been discussed for the type of signal the sensor provides. The sensor is also calibrated for normal force. The sensor is novel in the sense that it offers dynamic slip signal as well as the normal force information from a single contact location, it provides continuous signal during slip, and it has small size which can be easily incorporated into robotic fingers. The sensor has an edge over other existing sensors that its design is simple yet it provides strong signals which are largely unaffected by external disturbances. Copyright © 2005 by ASME

    MANAGING NUTRIENT LOSSES: SOME EMPIRICAL RESULTS ON THE POTENTIAL WATER QUALITY EFFECTS

    Over-application of manure on cropland can cause water quality degradation. This paper reports a modeling approach for assessing tradeoffs among manure storage and handling systems as they relate to the nutrient loadings in cropland runoff, including nitrate losses to groundwater. The CREAMS simulation model provided estimates of nutrient losses. A linear optimization model was used to determine the income-nutrient loss tradeoffs. Six-month storage was profitable for farmers with average-size dairy herds, but compared to daily spreading caused increased nitrate leaching through the soil to groundwater resources. Twelve-month storage systems decreased farm profitability while decreasing the total nitrogen losses from farm fields.Environmental Economics and Policy,

    Expert Finding by Capturing Organisational Knowledge from Legacy Documents

    Organisations capitalise on their best knowledge through the improvement of shared expertise which leads to a higher level of productivity and competency. The recognition of the need to foster the sharing of expertise has led to the development of expert finder systems that hold pointers to experts who posses specific knowledge in organisations. This paper discusses an approach to locating an expert through the application of information retrieval and analysis processes to an organization’s existing information resources, with specific reference to the engineering design domain. The approach taken was realised through an expert finder system framework. It enables the relationships of heterogeneous information sources with experts to be factored in modelling individuals’ expertise. These valuable relationships are typically ignored by existing expert finder systems, which only focus on how documents relate to their content. The developed framework also provides an architecture that can be easily adapted to different organisational environments. In addition, it also allows users to access the expertise recognition logic, giving them greater trust in the systems implemented using this framework.     This paper introduces a conceptual Teacher-Learner framework for a collaborative learning with serious games. An initial study identified twelve attributesof educational serious games that can be used to support effective learning. These attributes are used in the conceptual framework to support learning and pedagogy in combination with a game. A considerable number of serious games have been developed over the last ten years, with varying degrees of success. Due to a lack of clear standards and guidelines for game developers; it is difficult to justify claims that a specific game meets the learner’s requirements and/or expectations. This paper defines a conceptual model for serious games that will contribute to their design and the measurement of achievement in meeting the learners’ requirements

    In the context of on-line assessment in e-learning, a problem arises when a student taking an exam may wish to cheat by handing over personal credentials to someone else to take their place in an exam, Another problem is that there is no method for signing digital content as it is being produced in a computerized environment. Our proposed solution is to digitally sign the participant’s work by embedding voice samples in the transcript paper at regular intervals. In this investigation, we have demonstrated that a transparent stenographic methodology will provide an innovative and practical solution for achieving continuous authentication in an online educational environment by successful insertion and extraction of audio digital signatures

    Spectroscopic Studies on \u3cem\u3eArabidopsis\u3c/em\u3e ETHE1, a Glyoxalase II-like Protein

    ETHE1 (ethylmalonic encephalopathy protein 1) is a β-lactamase fold-containing protein that is essential for the survival of a range of organisms. In spite of the apparent importance of this enzyme, very little is known about its function or biochemical properties. In this study Arabidopsis ETHE1 was over-expressed and purified and shown to bind tightly to 1.2 ± 0.2 equivalents of iron. 1H NMR and EPR studies demonstrate that the predominant oxidation state of Fe in ETHE1 is Fe(II), and NMR studies confirm that two histidines are bound to Fe(II). EPR studies show that there is no antiferromagnetically coupled Fe(III)Fe(II) center in ETHE1. Gel filtration studies reveal that ETHE1 is a dimer in solution, which is consistent with previous crystallographic studies. Although very similar in terms of amino acid sequence to glyoxalase II, ETHE1 exhibits no thioester hydrolase activity, and activity screening assays reveal that ETHE1 exhibits low level esterase activity. Taken together, ETHE1 is a novel, mononuclear Fe(II)-containing member of the β-lactamase fold superfamily
