TDRSS momentum unload planning
A knowledge-based system is described which monitors TDRSS telemetry for problems in the momentum unload procedure. The system displays TDRSS telemetry and commands in real time via X-windows. The system constructs a momentum unload plan which agrees with the preferences of the attitude control specialists and the momentum growth characteristics of the individual spacecraft. During the execution of the plan, the system monitors the progress of the procedure and watches for unexpected problems

A Conserved DNA Repeat Promotes Selection of a Diverse Repertoire of Trypanosoma brucei Surface Antigens from the Genomic Archive.
African trypanosomes are mammalian pathogens that must regularly change their protein coat to survive in the host bloodstream. Chronic trypanosome infections are potentiated by their ability to access a deep genomic repertoire of Variant Surface Glycoprotein (VSG) genes and switch from the expression of one VSG to another. Switching VSG expression is largely based in DNA recombination events that result in chromosome translocations between an acceptor site, which houses the actively transcribed VSG, and a donor gene, drawn from an archive of more than 2,000 silent VSGs. One element implicated in these duplicative gene conversion events is a DNA repeat of approximately 70 bp that is found in long regions within each BES and short iterations proximal to VSGs within the silent archive. Early observations showing that 70-bp repeats can be recombination boundaries during VSG switching led to the prediction that VSG-proximal 70-bp repeats provide recombinatorial homology. Yet, this long held assumption had not been tested and no specific function for the conserved 70-bp repeats had been demonstrated. In the present study, the 70-bp repeats were genetically manipulated under conditions that induce gene conversion. In this manner, we demonstrated that 70-bp repeats promote access to archival VSGs. Synthetic repeat DNA sequences were then employed to identify the length, sequence, and directionality of repeat regions required for this activity. In addition, manipulation of the 70-bp repeats allowed us to observe a link between VSG switching and the cell cycle that had not been appreciated. Together these data provide definitive support for the long-standing hypothesis that 70-bp repeats provide recombinatorial homology during switching. Yet, the fact that silent archival VSGs are selected under these conditions suggests the 70-bp repeats also direct DNA pairing and recombination machinery away from the closest homologs (silent BESs) and toward the rest of the archive
Identification of novel pesticides for use against glasshouse invertebrate pests in UK tomatoes and peppers
To inform current and future pesticide availability to glasshouse vegetable growers, the current project trialled more than twenty products, including existing industry standards, against four key pests of glasshouse tomatoes and bell peppers. These included experimental conventional chemical pesticides as well as alternative biopesticide and biorational products based on phytochemicals, microbials and physically-acting substances. The results suggest that certain biopesticide products, particularly botanicals, provide good levels of pest control, with the same being true of experimental conventional chemical pesticides not yet recommended for use against these pests on these crops. Efforts are on-going to ensure that results of the current project translate to industry benefit via new pesticide approvals

Expert advisory systems for agricultural pest management control offer the means to capitalize on the wealth of information that is currently tied up in research laboratories and human experts' minds. The ideal system would blend knowledge from three sources - human experts, dynamic simulation models, and historical databases - to identify pests and to produce advisories for their management. Discovery of Two Distant Type Ia Supernovae in the Hubble Deep Field North with the Advanced Camera for Surveys
We present observations of the first two supernovae discovered with the
recently installed Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space
Telescope. The supernovae were found in Wide Field Camera images of the Hubble
Deep Field North taken with the F775W, F850LP, and G800L optical elements as
part of the ACS guaranteed time observation program. Spectra extracted from the
ACS G800L grism exposures confirm that the objects are Type Ia supernovae (SNe
Ia) at redshifts z=0.47 and z=0.95. Follow-up HST observations have been
conducted with ACS in F775W and F850LP and with NICMOS in the near-infrared
F110W bandpass, yielding a total of 9 flux measurements in the 3 bandpasses
over a period of 50 days in the observed frame. We discuss many of the
important issues in doing accurate photometry with the ACS. We analyze the
multi-band light curves using two different fitting methods to calibrate the
supernovae luminosities and place them on the SNe Ia Hubble diagram. The
resulting distances are consistent with the redshift-distance relation of the
accelerating universe model, although evolving intergalactic grey dust remains
as a less likely possibility. The relative ease with which these SNe Ia were
found, confirmed, and monitored demonstrates the potential ACS holds for
revolutionizing the field of high-redshift SNe Ia, and therefore of testing the

Expression of mucin synthesis and secretion in human tracheobronchial epithelial cells grown in culture.
The effects of culture conditions on growth and differentiation of human tracheobronchial epithelial (HTBE) cells have been defined. Epithelial cells were dissociated from tissues by protease treatment and were plated on tissue culture dishes in F12 medium supplemented with insulin, transferrin, epidermal growth factor, hydrocortisone, cholera toxin, bovine hypothalamus extract, and retinol. HTBE cells did not express any mucociliary function (ciliogenesis or mucin secretion) on tissue culture plastic, but they could be passaged 3 to 5 times with a total of 10 to 25 population doublings. Cells from early passages re-express both these functions when transplanted to tracheal grafts. When tissue culture plates were coated with collagen film or collagen gel substrata, cell attachment and proliferation were stimulated. However, the expression of mucous cell function in culture occurred only when cells were plated on collagen gel substrata and vitamin A (retinol) was present in the medium. Mucous cell differentiation under optimal conditions was defined by ultrastructural studies, by immunologic studies with mucin-specific monoclonal antibodies, and by carbohydrate and amino acid compositional analyses of mucin-like glycoproteins purified from culture medium. These results demonstrate for the first time that HTBE cells can express mucin synthesis and secretion under appropriate culture conditions
