Studies in a transonic rotor aerodynamics and noise facility
The design, construction and testing of a transonic rotor aerodynamics and noise facility was undertaken, using a rotating arm blade element support technique. This approach provides a research capability intermediate between that of a stationary element in a moving flow and that of a complete rotating blade system, and permits the acoustic properties of blade tip elements to be studied in isolation. This approach is an inexpensive means of obtaining data at high subsonic and transonic tip speeds on the effect of variations in tip geometry. The facility may be suitable for research on broad band noise and discrete noise in addition to high-speed noise. Initial tests were conducted over the Mach number range 0.3 to 0.93 and confirmed the adequacy of the acoustic treatment used in the facility to avoid reflection from the enclosure
A theory-based approach to understanding condom errors and problems reported by men attending an STI clinic
The official published version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2008 Springer VerlagWe employed the information–motivation–behavioral skills (IMB) model to guide an investigation of correlates for correct condom use among 278 adult (18–35 years old) male clients attending a sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic. An anonymous questionnaire aided by a CD-recording of the questions was administered. Linear Structural Relations Program was used to conduct path analyses of the hypothesized IMB model. Parameter estimates showed that while information did not directly affect behavioral skills, it did have a direct (negative) effect on condom use errors. Motivation had a significant direct (positive) effect on behavioral skills and a significant indirect (positive) effect on condom use errors through behavioral skills. Behavioral skills had a direct (negative) effect on condom use errors. Among men attending a public STI clinic, these findings suggest brief, clinic-based, safer sex programs for men who have sex with women should incorporate activities to convey correct condom use information, instill motivation to use condoms correctly, and directly enhance men’s behavioral skills for correct use of condoms

A curr ent meter that is capable of measuring the high-frequency fluctuations of the three-dimensional velocity vector has been developed. The meter works on a doppler-shift principle. At high velocities, the meter has been shown to have an accuracy of better than 3%

Periodic Patterns and Energy States of Buckled Films on Compliant Substrates
Thin stiff films on compliant elastic substrates subject to equi-biaxial compressive stress states are observed to buckle into various periodic mode patterns including checkerboard, hexagonal and herringbone. An experimental setting in which these modes are observed and evolve is described. The modes are characterized and ranked by the extent to which they reduce the elastic energy of the film–substrate system relative to that of the unbuckled state over a wide range of overstress. A new mode is identified and analyzed having nodal lines coincident with an equilateral triangular pattern. Two methods are employed to ascertain the energy in the buckled state: an analytical upper-bound method and a full numerical analysis. The upper-bound is shown to be reasonably accurate to large levels of overstress. For flat films, except at small states of overstress where the checkerboard is preferred, the herringbone mode has the lowest energy, followed by the checkerboard, with the hexagonal, triangular, and one-dimensional modes lowering the energy the least. At low overstress, the hexagonal mode is observed in the experiments not the square mode. It is proposed that a slight initial curvature of the film may play role in selecting the hexagonal pattern accompanied by a detailed analysis. An intriguing finding is that the hexagonal and triangular modes have the same energy in the buckled state and, moreover, a continuous transition between these modes exists involving a linear combination of the two modes with no change in energy. Experimental observations of various periodic modes are discussed with reference to the energy landscape. Discrepancies between observations and theory are identified and open issues are highlighted.Engineering and Applied Science

The State of Self-Organized Criticality of the Sun During the Last 3 Solar Cycles. I. Observations
We analyze the occurrence frequency distributions of peak fluxes , total
fluxes , and durations of solar flares over the last three solar cycles
(during 1980--2010) from hard X-ray data of HXRBS/SMM, BATSE/CGRO, and RHESSI.
From the synthesized data we find powerlaw slopes with mean values of
for the peak flux, for the total
flux, and for flare durations. We find a systematic
anti-correlation of the powerlaw slope of peak fluxes as a function of the
solar cycle, varying with an approximate sinusoidal variation
, with a
mean of , a variation of , a solar cycle
period yrs, and a cycle minimum time . The
powerlaw slope is flattest during the maximum of a solar cycle, which indicates
a higher magnetic complexity of the solar corona that leads to an
