Beyond the Waterbed Effect: Development of Fractional Order CRONE Control with Non-Linear Reset

In this paper a novel reset control synthesis method is proposed: CRONE reset control, combining a robust fractional CRONE controller with non-linear reset control to overcome waterbed effect. In CRONE control, robustness is achieved by creation of constant phase behaviour around bandwidth with the use of fractional operators, also allowing more freedom in shaping the open-loop frequency response. However, being a linear controller it suffers from the inevitable trade-off between robustness and performance as a result of the waterbed effect. Here reset control is introduced in the CRONE design to overcome the fundamental limitations. In the new controller design, reset phase advantage is approximated using describing function analysis and used to achieve better open-loop shape. Sufficient quadratic stability conditions are shown for the designed CRONE reset controllers and the control design is validated on a Lorentz-actuated nanometre precision stage. It is shown that for similar phase margin, better performance in terms of reference-tracking and noise attenuation can be achieved.Comment: American Control Conference 201

Crone control of a nonlinear hydraulic actuator

    Get PDF
The CRONE control (fractional robust control) of a hydraulic actuator whose dynamic model is nonlinear is presented. An input-output linearization under diffeomorphism and feedback is first achieved for the nominal plant. The relevance of this linearization when the parameters of the plant vary is then analyzed using the Volterra input-output representation in the frequency domain. CRONE control based on complex fractional differentiation is finally applied to control the velocity of the input-output linearized model when parametric variations occur

Stability of closed-loop fractional-order systems and definition of damping contours for the design of controllers

    Get PDF
Fractional complex order integrator has been used since 1991 for the design of robust control-systems. In the CRONE control methodology, it permits the parameterization of open loop transfer function which is optimized in a robustness context. Sets of fractional order integrators that lead to a given damping factor have also been used to build iso-damping contours on the Nichols plane. These iso-damping contours can also be used to optimize the third CRONE generation open-loop transfer function. However, these contours have been built using non band-limited integrators, even if such integrators reveal to lead to unstable closed loop systems. One objective of this paper is to show how the band-limitation modifies the left half-plane dominant poles of the closed loop system and removes the right half-plane ones. It is also presented how to obtain a fractional order open loop transfer function with a high phase slope and a useful frequency response. It is presented how the damping contours can be used to design robust controllers, not only CRONE controllers but also PD and QFT controllers

What test scores can and cannot tell us about the quality of our schools.

"What Test Scores Can and Cannot Tell Us about the Quality of Our Schools," by Ted Crone, recognizes that how to best judge the quality of our schools is a thorny issue. The No Child Left Behind Act, which was signed into law in January 2002, mandates standardized testing in math and reading for students in grades three through eight. The test scores will then be used both to gauge the students' level of proficiency in these subjects and to evaluate the schools' performance. But emphasizing test scores as a measurement of the quality of schools raises several questions. Crone looks at some of these questions and warns us to be cautious in how we use test scores.Education

The Crone Archetype: Women Reclaim Their Authentic Self by Resonating with Crone Images

    Get PDF
The purpose of this research is to describe the lived experience of women who resonate or activate crone archetypal images. The literature describes the crone archetype as a pre-existent form in the collective unconscious that embodies instinctive ways of channeling wisdom, inner knowing, and intuition, guiding us through the transition of life, and going inward to bring forth the light for transformation. When women resonate or activate the crone archetypal image they tap into the psyche, to reclaim primordial images and receive the power within them that honor older women. Seven in-depth interviews were completed with older women who described their experiences of resonating with crone archetypal images. In order to reflect the psycho-spiritual nature of this research, the method utilized was organic inquiry. To ensure this research reflected the women‟s perspective about their experiences and in their voice, critical feminist ethnographic principles were employed. The results of the interviews demonstrated that when the women resonated with their images, they embodied the dynamic forms of the crone archetype explained in the literature. However, most significant was the finding that the women affirmed their authentic self and trusted their inner feminine way of knowing. The implications of this research suggest that when women resonate or activate crone archetypal images that honor older women, they find a positive sense of self and purpose that ultimately can benefit society and integrate them into the culture as they transition through aging

Study of two robust controls for an hydraulic actuator

    Get PDF
Two robust control design methodologies are analyzed and compared in this article: the H-infinity control system design and the CRONE control system design. The aim of this article is to give practical considerations that will help a designer to choose between these two methodologies. The example of an electrohydraulic actuator is given in order to evaluate the implementation of each methodology and to compare the final performance

House prices and the quality of public schools: what are we buying?

    Get PDF
Do house prices reflect the quality of the local public schools? To what extent do school district policies determine how well students perform? How do such factors as neighborhood, family, and peers affect school quality and house prices? Ted Crone examines these questions, and others, to determine whether house prices do, indeed, include a school premium.Education ; Housing
