Surface roughness effect on ultracold neutron interaction with a wall and implications for computer simulations
We review the diffuse scattering and the loss coefficient in ultracold
neutron reflection from slightly rough surfaces, report a surprising reduction
in loss coefficient due to roughness, and discuss the possibility of transition
from quantum treatment to ray optics. The results are used in a computer
simulation of neutron storage in a recent neutron lifetime experiment that
re-ported a large discrepancy of neutron lifetime with the current particle
data value. Our partial re-analysis suggests the possibility of systematic
effects that were not included in this publication.Comment: 39 pages, 9 figures; additional calculations include
Performance Comparison of Control Schemes for Variable-Speed Wind Turbines
We analyze the performance of different control schemes when applied to the regulation problem of a variable-speed representative wind turbine. In particular, we formulate and compare a wind-scheduled PID, a LQR controller and a novel adaptive non-linear model predictive controller, equipped with observers of the tower states and wind. The simulations include gusts and turbulent winds of varying intensity in nominal as well as off-design operating conditions. The experiments highlight the possible advantages of model-based non-linear control strategies
Optimal Shutdown Management
The paper presents a novel approach for the synthesis of the open-loop pitch profile during emergency shutdowns. The problem is of interest in the design of wind turbines, as such maneuvers often generate design driving loads on some of the machine components. The pitch profile synthesis is formulated as a constrained optimal control problem, solved numerically using a direct single shooting approach. A cost function expressing a compromise between load reduction and rotor overspeed is minimized with respect to the unknown blade pitch profile. Constraints may include a load reduction not-to-exceed the next dominating loads, a not-to-be-exceeded maximum rotor speed, and a maximum achievable blade pitch rate. Cost function and constraints are computed over a possibly large number of operating conditions, defined so as to cover as well as possible the operating situations encountered in the lifetime of the machine. All such conditions are simulated by using a high-fidelity aeroservoelastic model of the wind turbine, ensuring the accuracy of the evaluation of all relevant parameters. The paper demonstrates the capabilities of the novel proposed formulation, by optimizing the pitch profile of a multi-MW wind turbine. Results show that the procedure can reliably identify optimal pitch profiles that reduce design-driving loads, in a fully automated way
Structured lexical similarity via convolution Kernels on dependency trees
A central topic in natural language process-ing is the design of lexical and syntactic fea-tures suitable for the target application. In this paper, we study convolution dependency tree kernels for automatic engineering of syntactic and semantic patterns exploiting lexical simi-larities. We define efficient and powerful ker-nels for measuring the similarity between de-pendency structures, whose surface forms of the lexical nodes are in part or completely dif-ferent. The experiments with such kernels for question classification show an unprecedented results, e.g. 41 % of error reduction of the for-mer state-of-the-art. Additionally, semantic role classification confirms the benefit of se-mantic smoothing for dependency kernels.
High-resolution periodic mode shapes identification for wind turbines
The stability analysis of in-operation wind turbines is a very important topic, that has received considerable attention in the last years. Many identification algorithms have been developed to estimate frequencies and damping ratios, but very few papers have been dedicated to the mode shapes. The knowledge of high-resolution mode shapes could be exploited for several applications including model validation, accurate description of the vibratory content of a machine and spatially-accurate damage detection. In this work, we will present a procedure to compute the high-resolution periodic mode shapes of a wind turbine, and apply it to a high-fidelity wind turbine model. The results show that this methodology is able to identify the first low-damped modes of the system with good accuracy
Heat Transfer Correlations for compressible flow in Micro Heat Exchangers
The paper discusses the definition of dimensionless parameters useful to define a local correlation for convective heat transfer in compressible, micro scale gaseous flows. A combination of static and stagnation temperatures is chosen, as it allows to weight the temperature change related to the heat transfer and that induced by conversion of internal energy into kinetic one. The correlation offers a purely convective local Nusselt number, i.e. correlating the heat flow rate with the local flow parameters and wall surface temperature. The correlation is validated through a series of numerical computations in both counter-current and co-current micro heat exchanger configurations. The numerical computations take into account rarefaction and conjugate heat transfer effects
