    Imaging of Chemical Kinetics at the Water-Water Interface in a Free-Flowing Liquid Flat-Jet

    We present chemical kinetics measurements of the luminol oxidation chemiluminescence (CL) reaction at the interface between two aqueous solutions, using liquid jet technology. Free-flowing liquid microjets are a relatively recent development that have found their way into a growing number of applications in spectroscopy and dynamics. A variant thereof, called flat-jet, is obtained when two cylindrical jets of a liquid are crossed, leading to a chain of planar leaf-shaped structures of the flowing liquid. We here show that in the first leaf of this chain, the fluids do not exhibit turbulent mixing, providing a clean interface between the liquids from the impinging jets. We also show, using the example of the luminol CL reaction, how this setup can be used to obtain kinetics information from friction-less flow and by circumventing the requirement for rapid mixing by intentionally suppressing all turbulent mixing and instead relying on diffusion

    Effect of yogurt containing polydextrose, Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM and Bifidobacterium lactis HN019: a randomized, double-blind, controlled study in chronic constipation

    BACKGROUND: Constipation is a frequent complaint and the combination of a prebiotic and probiotics could have a potentially synergic effect on the intestinal transit. The present study therefore aims to investigate the combination of polydextrose (Litesse®), L. acidophilus NCFM® and B. lactis HN019 in a yogurt on intestinal transit in subjects who suffer from constipation. METHODS: Patients with constipation were randomly divided into two groups, Control Group (CG) and Treatment Group (TG), and had to eat 180 ml of unflavored yogurt every morning for 14 days. Those in the CG received only yogurt, while the TG received yogurt containing polydextrose, L. acidophilus NCFM® (ATCC 700396) and B. lactis HN019 (AGAL NM97/09513). RESULTS: Favourable clinical response was assessed since Agachan score had a significant reduction at the end of the study in both groups and tended to be better in the TG. The subjects in the treatment group also had a shorter transit time at the end of the intervention compared to the control group (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: The product containing yogurt with polydextrose, B. lactis HN019 and L. acidophilus NCFM® significantly shortened colonic transit time after two weeks in the TG compared to CG and may be an option for treatment of constipation

    Photoabsorption and Photoionization Cross Sections of Pyridine in the Vacuum-Ultraviolet Energy Range

    We have performed an experimental investigation into the interaction of vacuum-ultraviolet synchrotron radiation with pyridine molecules in the gas phase. Specifically, a double-ion chamber spectrometer was used to measure the absolute photoabsorption cross sections and the photoionization quantum yields from the ionization threshold to 21.5 eV. Moreover, photoionization and neutral-decay cross sections in absolute scale were derived from these data. In addition, the fragmentation pattern was investigated as a function of the photon energy by using a time-of-flight mass spectrometer and the photoelectron-photoion coincidence technique. Thus, the absolute partial ionization cross sections for each ionic fragment were obtained. Comparisons are made with experimental data available in the literature
