    A single model for a standard of comparison for other models when dealing with rain attenuation problems in system design and experimentation is proposed. Refinements to the Global Rain Production Model are incorporated. Path loss and noise estimation procedures as the basic input to systems design for earth-to-space microwave links operating at frequencies from 1 to 300 GHz are provided.     Flight investigation of the VFR and IFR landing approach characteristics and terminal area airspace requirements for a light STOL airplane

    A flight research program was conducted to determine the terminal area instrument flight capabilities of a light STOL airplane. Simulated (hooded) instrument landing approaches were made using steep single-segment and two-segment glide slopes. A brief investigation was also made of the visual flight terminal area capabilities of the aircraft. The results indicated that the airplane could be flown on a 7 deg glide-slope ILS-type approach in still air with an adequate 3 deg margin for downward correction

    A two-component rain model for the prediction of attenuation and diversity improvement

    A new model was developed to predict attenuation statistics for a single Earth-satellite or terrestrial propagation path. The model was extended to provide predictions of the joint occurrences of specified or higher attenuation values on two closely spaced Earth-satellite paths. The joint statistics provide the information required to obtain diversity gain or diversity advantage estimates. The new model is meteorologically based. It was tested against available Earth-satellite beacon observations and terrestrial path measurements. The model employs the rain climate region descriptions of the Global rain model. The rms deviation between the predicted and observed attenuation values for the terrestrial path data was 35 percent, a result consistent with the expectations of the Global model when the rain rate distribution for the path is not used in the calculation. Within the United States the rms deviation between measurement and prediction was 36 percent but worldwide it was 79 percent

    Virginia precipitation scatter experiment: Data analysis

    Rain scatter and surface rain rate data were obtained from October 3, 1970 to October 2, 1971 using a bistatic radar system and tipping bucket rain gauges located in southeastern Virginia. The data showed that interference may occur between earth and terrestrial stations located within 80 km of each other either by mainlobe-to-mainlobe coupling or sidelobe-to-mainlobe coupling. The data further show that the distributions of scattering cross section per unit volume measured at several heights and estimated from surface rain gauge data were different. The density functions for the scattering cross section per unit volume values measured at a 3 km height and estimated from surface rain rate data were identical only for summer thundershowers. The data showed that the CCIR model used to estimate interference due to rain is inadequate because the cell size and change of scattering cross section per unit volume with height estimates of the model predict transmission loss values that are too low (more interference than will occur)

    30 pages, 20 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJSThe radial velocity (RV) method plays a major role in the discovery of nearby exoplanets. To efficiently find planet candidates from the data obtained in high-precision RV surveys, we apply a signal diagnostic framework to detect RV signals that are statistically significant, consistent in time, robust in the choice of noise models, and do not correlated with stellar activity. Based on the application of this approach to the survey data of the Planet Finder Spectrograph, we report 15 planet candidates located in 14 stellar systems. We find that the orbits of the planet candidates around HD 210193, 103949, 8326, and 71135 are consistent with temperate zones around these stars (where liquid water could exist on the surface). With periods of 7.76 and 15.14 days, respectively, the planet candidates around star HIP 54373 form a 1:2 resonance system. These discoveries demonstrate the feasibility of automated detection of exoplanets from large RV surveys, which may provide a complete sample of nearby Earth analogs.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

    Disclosing an autism diagnosis improves ratings of candidate performance in employment interviews

    Employment interviews can be challenging for autistic people. In addition to standard interview procedures often being inaccessible, features associated with autism (including atypical emotional expression, eye-contact, and gestures) may lead to negative first impressions. Research using vignettes and ‘thin slices’ of communication indicate that perceptions of an autistic individual can be improved when their autism diagnosis is disclosed. Here, we examined the impact of diagnostic disclosure on judgements of autistic adults undergoing an entire mock employment interview. A total of 119 participants (known as ‘raters’) watched a video of an autistic candidate’s mock employment interview, after which they provided overall impressions of the candidate on factors such as confidence, motivation, and knowledgeability. Raters were either (1) unaware of the interviewee’s diagnosis, (2) aware of their diagnosis, or (3) aware of their diagnosis and provided with information about autism. Results indicate that diagnostic disclosure improved perceptions of autistic candidates across all dimensions compared to when raters were unaware of their diagnosis. The provision of additional information about the diagnosis did not further improve ratings. The findings have important implications for employers and autistic people, who should consider the potential impact of diagnostic disclosure prior to interviewing for a role

    Predictive value of respiratory symptoms and bronchial hyperresponsiveness to diagnose asthma in New Zealand

    SummaryRespiratory symptoms are often used as the only diagnostic criteria for asthma in epidemiological surveys and the clinical diagnosis of asthma relies primarily on a detailed history. The aim of this study is to predict the diagnostic value of 11 different respiratory symptoms to diagnose asthma, and to determine if bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR) improves the predictive value of these respiratory symptoms.A random sample of 1257 subjects aged 20–44 years old in 3 different areas of New Zealand were selected between March 1991 and December 1992 to answer the European Community Respiratory Health Survey questionnaire on respiratory symptoms. Of these, 784 underwent bronchial challenge with methacholine. The prevalence of current doctor diagnosed asthma (DDA) defined as asthma confirmed by a physician and an asthma attack in the last 12 months was 8.3%. Wheezing with dyspnoea is the single best predictor of diagnosed asthma with a sensitivity of 82%, a specificity of 90% and a Youden's index of 0.72. Wheezing alone is more sensitive (94%) but less specific (76%), with a Youden's index of 0.70. The addition of BHR to asthma symptoms decreases sensitivity and increases specificity with a small increase in Youden's index to 0.75. In New Zealand adults, a history of wheezing with BHR best predicts a diagnosis of asthma but wheezing alone or with dyspnoea are the two best symptoms for predicting asthma
