Nitrogen addition alters composition, diversity, and functioning of microbial communities in mangrove soils : an incubation experiment
Mangrove ecosystems are important for carbon storage due to their high productivity and low decomposition rates. Waterways have experienced increased nutrient loads as a result of anthropogenic activities and it is unclear how this may affect carbon and nutrient cycles in downstream mangroves that receive these nutrient-rich waters. Using a laboratory-based incubation experiment, this study aimed to assess the effects of nutrient addition on the diversity and structure of mangrove soil bacterial communities, as well as biomass and activity of the soil microbial community, under different oxygen conditions. Bacterial community diversity and composition was characterised using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and microbial activity was examined through the measurement of microbial respiration and the activities of enzymes associated with organic matter decomposition. Nitrogen addition caused clear shifts in bacterial community composition, with decreases in bacterial diversity and the abundance of sulfate-reducing bacteria. Microbial biomass also decreased with nitrogen addition under reduced oxygen incubations. Changes in bacterial community structure were accompanied by changes in the activity of some enzymes involved in carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling. Under reduced oxygen conditions, nitrogen addition resulted in a significant increase in the microbial metabolic quotient but no accompanying change in microbial respiration, which was explained by a decrease in microbial biomass. The findings of this study indicate that nitrogen loading has potential implications for microbial communities and carbon and nutrient cycling in mangrove environments that warrant further investigation under field conditions

The GAPS Experiment to Search for Dark Matter using Low-energy Antimatter
The GAPS experiment is designed to carry out a sensitive dark matter search
by measuring low-energy cosmic ray antideuterons and antiprotons. GAPS will
provide a new avenue to access a wide range of dark matter models and masses
that is complementary to direct detection techniques, collider experiments and
other indirect detection techniques. Well-motivated theories beyond the
Standard Model contain viable dark matter candidates which could lead to a
detectable signal of antideuterons resulting from the annihilation or decay of
dark matter particles. The dark matter contribution to the antideuteron flux is
believed to be especially large at low energies (E < 1 GeV), where the
predicted flux from conventional astrophysical sources (i.e. from secondary
interactions of cosmic rays) is very low. The GAPS low-energy antiproton search
will provide stringent constraints on less than 10 GeV dark matter, will
provide the best limits on primordial black hole evaporation on Galactic length
scales, and will explore new discovery space in cosmic ray physics.
Unlike other antimatter search experiments such as BESS and AMS that use
magnetic spectrometers, GAPS detects antideuterons and antiprotons using an
exotic atom technique. This technique, and its unique event topology, will give
GAPS a nearly background-free detection capability that is critical in a
rare-event search. GAPS is designed to carry out its science program using
long-duration balloon flights in Antarctica. A prototype instrument was
successfully flown from Taiki, Japan in 2012. GAPS has now been approved by
NASA to proceed towards the full science instrument, with the possibility of a
first long-duration balloon flight in late 2020. Here we motivate low-energy
cosmic ray antimatter searches and discuss the current status of the GAPS

Can programme theory be used as a 'translational toolâ to optimise health service delivery in a national early yearsâ initiative in Scotland: a case study
Background
Theory-based evaluation (TBE) approaches are heralded as supporting formative evaluation by facilitating increased use of evaluative findings to guide programme improvement. It is essential that learning from programme implementation is better used to improve delivery and to inform other initiatives, if interventions are to be as effective as they have the potential to be. Nonetheless, few studies describe formative feedback methods, or report direct instrumental use of findings resulting from TBE. This paper uses the case of Scotlandâs, National Health Service, early yearsâ, oral health improvement initiative (Childsmile) to describe the use of TBE as a framework for providing feedback on delivery to programme staff and to assess its impact on programmatic action.<p></p>
Methods
In-depth, semi-structured interviews and focus groups with key stakeholders explored perceived deviations between the Childsmile programme 'as deliveredâ and its Programme Theory (PT). The data was thematically analysed using constant comparative methods. Findings were shared with key programme stakeholders and discussions around likely impact and necessary actions were facilitated by the authors. Documentary review and ongoing observations of programme meetings were undertaken to assess the extent to which learning was acted upon.<p></p>
Results
On the whole, the activities documented in Childsmileâs PT were implemented as intended. This paper purposefully focuses on those activities where variation in delivery was evident. Differences resulted from the stage of roll-out reached and the flexibility given to individual NHS boards to tailor local implementation. Some adaptations were thought to have diverged from the central features of Childsmileâs PT, to the extent that there was a risk to achieving outcomes. The methods employed prompted national service improvement action, and proposals for local action by individual NHS boards to address this.<p></p>
Conclusions
The TBE approach provided a platform, to direct attention to areas of risk within a national health initiative, and to agree which intervention components were 'coreâ to its hypothesised success. The study demonstrates that PT can be used as a 'translational toolâ to facilitate instrumental use of evaluative findings to optimise implementation within a complex health improvement programme.<p></p>
