Propositional Idea Density in written descriptions of health: Potential clinical applications

    Get PDF
In order to assess the effect of word finding difficulties for the spontaneous discourse of people with aphasia, a number of different measures of informativeness have been developed for clinical application (Doyle, Goda, & Spencer, 1995; Nicholas & Brookshire, 1993; Oelschlaeger & Thorne, 1999; Wright, Silverman, & Newhoff, 2003). The main challenges for the assessment of discourse (written or spoken) relate to issues of validity and reliability (AUTHOR DELETED). There is a need for valid and authentic sampling which is personally relevant to individuals and additionally, able to be repeated for the same individual on successive occasions, and comparable to other individuals. The use of a consistent elicitation task that could be widely used for adult populations would be beneficial to both allow comparisons of the same individual over time and also across individuals

Duchenne muscular dystrophy: Canadian paediatric neuromuscular physicians survey

    Get PDF
Background: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is the most common form of muscular dystrophy in childhood. Method: To assess the current care of paediatric DMD patients in Canada, a questionnaire was mailed to 17 physicians who were members of the Canadian paediatric neuromuscular group. Areas of enquiry included; 1) multidisciplinary team composition; 2) means of DMD diagnosis; 3) corticosteroid use; surveillance and management for: 4) orthopaedic, 5) respiratory and 6) cardiac complications and 7) health maintenance (nutrition & immunizations). Results: Completed surveys were returned by 14/17 (82%) of physicians. Twelve respondents followed DMD patients. All centres had multidisciplinary teams, including respirology (11/12), child neurology or physiatry (11), physiotherapy (9), occupational therapy (9) and orthopaedic surgery (7). Deflazacort 0.9mg/kg/d was used at all centres, which was continued after loss of independent ambulation (11), along with routine calcium and vitamin D supplementation (10). Night splints were prescribed at all centres. Routine surveillance studies included pulmonary function testing (11), sleep studies (10), EKG/echocardiogram (10), bone density (DEXA) scans (10), spine radiography (9), and dietician referral (4). Conclusion: Paediatric DMD patients are receiving relatively consistent care in multidisciplinary clinics across Canada, in accordance with recommended guidelines for DMD

    Evaluating in-company industrial relations climate

The aim of the study was to develop, validate and implement a measure of in-company industrial relations climate (IRC). A model of in-company industrial relations (IR) was formulated within the context of an open IR system. Key in-company IR dimensions of employee representation, grievance and disciplinary procedures, communications, supervision and peer group were identified. The effective functioning of these components was seen as necessary if an overall policy strategy to deal with in-company IR was to be operational. The use of IR climate (IRC) as a specific type of organisational climate was proposed as a suitable form of analysis of in-company IR. The need for a psychometrically reliable and valid instrument was indicated and an appropriate procedure for establishing a reliable and valid in-company IRC scale was formulated and implemented. The validation procedure was implemented through the application of an initial form of the in-company IRC scale (IIRCS) to a sample of 16 subjects in a pilot study. The scale was revised and administered as part of a battery, which included scales establishing organisational commitment and job satisfaction, to a sample of subjects ( n â–  393) at a South African gold mine. A separate sample of 32 employees was drawn from the organisation to establish teat-retest reliability. The IIRCS was refined through the elimination of items which reduced the reliability of the sub-scales. The sub-scale of peer group was eliminated because of limitations of reliability and construct validity. Results for the revised sub-scales assessing the remaining in-company IRC dimensions indicated acceptable levels of internal-consistency and test-retest reliability coefficients. Correlations between IIRC

Operational research in the evaluation of social security benefit policies

This thesis makes it possible for future reforms of the social security system to be based on the best available information. An approach to benefit policy analysis is defined and a technique for processing available data as required is identified. Progress on evaluating policies more faithfully in accord with expected performance rather than assuming perfect implementation is made. Having reviewed the development of the social security system and previous contributions to benefit policy analysis the requirements of an information system are defined. Available data sources are evaluated. This analysis highlights the complementary nature of the qualities of the Family Expenditure Survey and specialised sources. The use of iterative proportional fitting procedures to combine these sources in such a way as to exploit their strengths and minimise the impact of their weaknesses is advocated. Validation tests show the approach results in good estimates. Furthermore the approach is easy to understand and lies well in an analytic process geared towards increasing involvement of non-technical personnel. The same approach can be used to analyse the alternative benefit regimes for the distributional implications of hypothesised trends in aggregate variables. The need to consider operational issues when analysing policies is recognised. Two aspects of this problem are considered. An analysis of appeals data led to rankings of aspects of the benefit entitlement assessment procedure in terms of difficulty caused and persistence with which problems arose. The second analysis is a pilot study of inter-regional differences in population characteristics and aspects of benefit implementation to identify ways of improving the operational system generally. An important aspect of this analysis is the presentation of data on computer drawn maps - a further attempt to increase participation in the analytic process. Further development of this work should enable the evaluation of policy alternatives in terms of expected performance rather than on the assumption of perfect implementation

More than an Amanuensis: Ernestine Hill’s Contribution to The Passing of the Aborigines

The precise nature of the authorship of Daisy Bates’ controversial bestseller, The Passing of the Aborigines, has been contested since its publication in 1938. Bates was, by then, experiencing health limitations that would have prevented her from producing a coherent, major literary work without significant physical, emotional, financial and editorial support. Ernestine Hill, who provided much of the book’s editorial heavy lifting and writing, later claimed she should have been recognised as co-author, which Bates refuted. The conflicting perceptions and accounts of this authorial collaboration leave some tantalising threads to tease out. To what extent, if any, did Bates contribute to the writing process? Did Hill make as substantial a contribution to the writing and crafting of the book as she claimed? To investigate these issues, the authors turned to computational stylistics techniques to develop profiles for the authorial signatures of Daisy Bates and Ernestine Hill, in an attempt to assess their respective contributions in compositing and crafting The Passing of the Aborigines. The study showed that Hill, as Bates’ ghostwriter, created a new hybrid text type that blended her own more formal, professional journalistic style and Bates’ personal, anecdotal one. As far as we know this is the first time a computational stylistics analysis has attempted to assess the extent to which a ghostwriter’s own stylistic habits — reflected in the relative frequency of their usage of preferred sets of function words — are transferred to the text in question
