Hard Colour Singlet Exchange at the Tevatron
We have performed a detailed phenomenological investigation of the hard
colour singlet exchange process which is observed at the Tevatron in events
which have a large rapidity gap between outgoing jets. We include the effects
of multiple interactions to obtain a prediction for the gap survival factor.
Comparing the data on the fraction of gap events with the prediction from BFKL
pomeron exchange we find agreement provided that a constant value of alpha_s is
used in the BFKL calculation. Moreover, the value of alpha_s is in line with
that extracted from measurements made at HERA.Comment: 22 pages, 19 figure
Cluster Inter-Spacecraft Communications
A document describes a radio communication system being developed for exchanging data and sharing data-processing capabilities among spacecraft flying in formation. The system would establish a high-speed, low-latency, deterministic loop communication path connecting all the spacecraft in a cluster. The system would be a wireless version of a ring bus that complies with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard 1393 (which pertains to a spaceborne fiber-optic data bus enhancement to the IEEE standard developed at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory). Every spacecraft in the cluster would be equipped with a ring-bus radio transceiver. The identity of a spacecraft would be established upon connection into the ring bus, and the spacecraft could be at any location in the ring communication sequence. In the event of failure of a spacecraft, the ring bus would reconfigure itself, bypassing a failed spacecraft. Similarly, the ring bus would reconfigure itself to accommodate a spacecraft newly added to the cluster or newly enabled or re-enabled. Thus, the ring bus would be scalable and robust. Reliability could be increased by launching, into the cluster, spare spacecraft to be activated in the event of failure of other spacecraft
Network-Attached Solid-State Recorder Architecture
A document discusses placing memory modules on the high-speed serial interconnect, which is used by a spacecraft s computer elements for inter-processor communications, to allow all multiple computer system architectures to access the spacecraft data storage at the same time. Each memory board is identical electrically and receives its bus ID upon connection to the system. The computer elements are configured in a similar fashion. The architecture allows for multiple memory boards to be accessed simultaneously by different computer elements, and results in a scalable, strong, fault-tolerant system. The IEEE-1393 ring bus can be routed so that multiple card failures can occur and the mass memory storage will still function
Double Diffractive Higgs and Di-photon Production at the Tevatron and LHC
We use the POMWIG Monte Carlo generator to predict the cross-sections for
double diffractive higgs and di-photon production at the Tevatron and LHC. We
find that the higgs production cross-section is too small to be observable at
Tevatron energies, and even at the LHC observation would be difficult. Double
diffractive di-photon production, however, should be observable within one year
of Tevatron Run II.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figure
Some calculations on the ground and lowest-triplet state of the helium isoelectronic sequence with the nucleus in motion
The method described in the preceding paper for the solution of two-electron atoms, which was used to calculate the 1 1S and 2 3S states of helium and heliumlike atoms within the fixed-nucleus approximation, has been applied to the case where all three particles are in relative motion. The solutions in the present case automatically include the effects of the mass polarization term and are compared with the results obtained for the term by using first-order perturbation theory with the fixed-nucleus wave functions. The input data for a particular atom consist of the atomic number, as before, but now the corresponding mass of the nucleus must be given also. Nonrelativistic energies with the nuclear mass included in the calculation have been obtained for the 1 1S and 2 3S states for Z ranging from 1 to 10. The energy with the nucleus in motion can be expressed only to eight significant figures (SF's) given the accuracy with which the relevant physical constants are known at present. All the results given here are computed as if these constants were known to ten SF's so that errors not incurred due to rounding. Convergence of the energies to ten SF's for both the singlet and triplet state was reached with a matrix of size 444 for Z values from 2 to 10. Convergence for the H- ion was a little slower
The Milky Way's stellar halo - lumpy or triaxial?
We present minimum chi-squared fits of power law and Hernquist density
profiles to F-turnoff stars in eight 2.5 deg wide stripes of SDSS data: five in
the North Galactic Cap and three in the South Galactic cap. Portions of the
stellar Galactic halo that are known to contain large streams of tidal debris
or other lumpy structure, or that may include significant contamination from
the thick disk, are avoided. The data strongly favor a model that is not
symmetric about the Galaxy's axis of rotation. If included as a free parameter,
the best fit to the center of the spheroid is surprisingly approx 3 kpc from
the Galactic center in the direction of the Sun's motion. The model fits favor
a low value of the density of halo stars at the solar position. The alternative
to a non-axisymmetric stellar distribution is that our fits are contaminated by
