    Boldness and natural behaviors in the African lion (Panthera leo): How are they related?

    The African lion (Panthera leo) population is diminishing rapidly, approximately 43% since 1993 (Bauer et al., 2016. The species is currently listed as vulnerable by the IUCN (Bauer et al., 2016). With numerous threats to current populations including human conflict, prey depletion and habitat loss the African lion is in danger of becoming endangered or even critically endangered in the near future. Ex-situ conservation is a proposed method of restoring populations. The current study focuses on correlations of boldness with natural behaviors and sociality to further understand individual personality in hopes of connecting it with success after reintroduction. Six playbacks were used to assess boldness personality traits of the 12 individuals of the Dambwa pride. Social interactions and daily activity budgets were also recorded.     Non-Gaussianity in Two-Field Inflation

    We derive semi-analytic formulae for the local bispectrum and trispectrum in general two-field inflation and provide a simple geometric recipe for building observationally allowed models with observable non-Gaussianity. We use the \delta N formalism and the transfer function formalism to express the bispectrum almost entirely in terms of model-independent physical quantities. Similarly, we calculate the trispectrum and show that the trispectrum parameter \tau NL can be expressed entirely in terms of spectral observables, which provides a new consistency relation unique to two-field inflation. We show that in order to generate observably large non-Gaussianity during inflation, the sourcing of curvature modes by isocurvature modes must be extremely sensitive to the initial conditions, and that the amount of sourcing must be moderate in order to avoid excessive fine-tuning. Under some minimal assumptions, we argue that the first condition is satisfied only when neighboring trajectories through the two-dimensional field space diverge during inflation. Geometrically, this means that the inflaton must roll along a ridge in the potential V for some time during inflation and that its trajectory must turn slightly (but not too sharply) in field space. Therefore, it follows that two-field scenarios with attractor solutions necessarily produce small non-Gaussianity. This explains why it has been so difficult to achieve large non-Gaussianity in two-field inflation, and why it has only been achieved in a narrow class of models like hybrid inflation and certain product potentials where the potential and/or the initial conditions are fine-tuned.     New advances in amblyopia therapy I: Binocular therapies and pharmacologic augmentation

    Amblyopia therapy options have traditionally been limited to penalisation of the non-amblyopic eye with either patching or pharmaceutical penalisation. Solid evidence, mostly from the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, has validated both number of hours a day of patching and days per week of atropine use. The use of glasses alone has also been established as a good first-line therapy for both anisometropic and strabismic amblyopia. Unfortunately, visual acuity equalisation or even improvement is not always attainable with these methods. Additionally, non-compliance with prescribed therapies contributes to treatment failures, with data supporting difficulty adhering to full treatment sessions. Interest in alternative therapies for amblyopia treatment has long been a topic of interest among researchers and clinicians alike. Incorporating new technology with an understanding of the biological basis of amblyopia has led to enthusiasm for binocular treatment of amblyopia. Early work on perceptual learning as well as more recent enthusiasm for iPad-based dichoptic training have each generated interesting and promising data for vision improvement in amblyopes. Use of pharmaceutical augmentation of traditional therapies has also been investigated. Several different drugs with unique mechanisms of action are thought to be able to neurosensitise the brain and enhance responsiveness to amblyopia therapy. No new treatment has emerged from currently available evidence as superior to the traditional therapies in common practice today. But ongoing investigation into the use of both new technology and the understanding of the neural basis of amblyopia promises alternate or perhaps better cures in the future.</jats:p

    The Influence of Safety, Efficacy, and Medical Condition Severity on Natural v. Synthetic Drug Preference

    Research indicates that there is a preference for natural v. synthetic products, but the influence of this preference on drug choice in the medical domain is largely unknown. We present 5 studies in which participants were asked to consider a hypothetical situation in which they had a medical issue requiring pharmacological therapy. Participants ( N = 1223) were asked to select a natural, plant-derived, or synthetic drug. In studies 1a and 1b, approximately 79% of participants selected the natural v. synthetic drug, even though the safety and efficacy of the drugs were identical. Furthermore, participants rated the natural drug as safer than the synthetic drug, and as that difference increased, the odds of choosing the natural over synthetic drug increased. In studies 2 and 3, approximately 20% of participants selected the natural drug even when they were informed that it was less safe (study 2) or less effective (study 3) than the synthetic drug. Finally, in study 4, approximately 65% of participants chose a natural over synthetic drug regardless of the severity of a specific medical condition (mild v. severe hypertension), and this choice was predicted by perceived safety and efficacy differences. Overall, these data indicate that there is a bias for natural over synthetic drugs. This bias could have implications for drug choice and usage
