    The influence of structural defects on intra-granular critical currents of bulk MgB2

    Bulk MgB2 samples were prepared under different synthesis conditions and analyzed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The critical current densities were determined from the magnetization versus magnetic field curves of bulk and powder-dispersed-in-epoxy samples. Results show that through a slow cooling process, the oxygen dissolved in bulk MgB2 at high synthesis temperatures can segregate and form nanometer-sized coherent precipitates of Mg(B,O)2 in the MgB2 matrix. Magnetization measurements indicate that these precipitates act as effective flux pinning centers and therefore significantly improve the intra-grain critical current density and its field dependence.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, to be published in IEE Transactions in Applied Superconductivit

    Climatology of the Low-Level Jet at the Southern Great Plains Atmospheric Boundary Layer Experiments Site

    A unique dataset obtained with combinations of minisodars and 915-MHz wind profilers at the Atmospheric Boundary Layer Experiments (ABLE) facility in Kansas was used to examine the detailed characteristics of the nocturnal low-level jet (LLJ). In contrast to instruments used in earlier studies, the ABLE instruments provide hourly, high-resolution vertical profiles of wind velocity from just above the surface to approximately 2 km above ground level (AGL). Furthermore, the 6-yr span of the dataset allowed the examination of interannual variability in jet properties with improved statistical reliability. It was found that LLJs occurred during 63% of the nighttime periods sampled. Although most of the observed jets were southerly, a substantial fraction (28%) was northerly. Wind maxima occurred most frequently at 200–400 m AGL, though some jets were found as low as 50 m, and the strongest jets tended to occur above 300 m. Comparison of LLJ heights at three locations within the ABLE domain and at one location outside the domain suggests that the jet is equipotential rather than terrain following. The occurrence of southerly LLJ varied annually in a way that suggests a connection between the tendency for jet formation and the large-scale circulation patterns associated with El Niño and La Niña, as well as with the Pacific decadal oscillation.     We deduce the gluino contribution to the three-loop QCD \beta function within the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) from its standard QCD expression. The result is a first step in the computation of the full MSSM three-loop \beta function. In addition, in the case of a light gluino it provides the strong three-loop SUSY correction to the extrapolation of the strong coupling constant from the low energy regime to the Z region and up to the squark threshold.Comment: 11 pages, RevTex, 4 Postscript figur

    Angular dependent vortex pinning mechanisms in YBCO coated conductors and thin films

    We present a comparative study of the angular dependent critical current density in YBa2Cu3O7 films deposited on IBAD MgO and on single crystal MgO and SrTiO3 substrates. We identify three angular regimes where pinning is dominated by different types of correlated and uncorrelated defects. We show that those regimes are present in all cases, indicating that the pinning mechanisms are the same, but their extension and characteristics are sample dependent, reflecting the quantitative differences in texture and defect density. In particular, the more defective nature of the films on IBAD turns into an advantage as it results in stronger vortex pinning, demonstrating that the critical current density of the films on single crystals is not an upper limit for the performance of the IBAD coated conductors.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures.     The Woods-Saxon Potential in the Dirac Equation

    The two-component approach to the one-dimensional Dirac equation is applied to the Woods-Saxon potential. The scattering and bound state solutions are derived and the conditions for a transmission resonance (when the transmission coefficient is unity) and supercriticality (when the particle bound state is at E=-m) are then derived. The square potential limit is discussed. The recent result that a finite-range symmetric potential barrier will have a transmission resonance of zero-momentum when the corresponding well supports a half-bound state at E=-m is demonstrated.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures.     VEGETATION FIRE FUELS MAPPING IN THE SAN DIEGO CITY CANYONS – A METHOD COMPARISON

    Fire risk is a major threat to life, property and natural resources in southern California. Recent fire disasters occurred in autumn 2003 and 2007. Fire risk management deals with these hazards, input data are collected, analyzed and evaluated. One of the most important input data is the vegetation density in the endangered areas. Here we describe methods to map vegetation density forming five hazard classes. The main objective of this study is to explore the benefits of using remote sensed data for the accurate classification of vegetation in San Diego city canyons. Three very high resolution remote sensing data sets (< 1 m) were used in comparison: scanned color infrared film (CIR) airborne, digital multi-spectral airborne (ADS40) and digital multi-spectral satellite imagery (QuickBird). Different classification approaches (e.g. pixel-based, segment-based and knowledge-based) were tested and analyzed to separate the vegetation into five hazard classes. Accuracy assessment indicated low overall accuracies of 58 % on average. With regard to an optimized classification result in particular unsupervised and segment-based classification can be recommended. The overall accuracy for these two methods reached around 62 %. The use of specially selected reference areas for validation helped to increase the accuracies up to 81 %. Also a separating between three instead of five different hazard classes resulted in accuracies around 80 %. Furthermore it could be shown that all three data sets can be used for successful classification procedures. The resulting fire risk maps can help to reduce or prevent fire hazards.     Evidence of Syndemics and Sexuality-Related Discrimination Among Young Sexual-Minority Women

    Purpose: Syndemics, or the co-occurrence and interaction of health problems, have been examined extensively among young men who have sex with men, but their existence remain unexamined, to our knowledge, among sexual-minority (i.e., lesbian, gay, and bisexual) women. Thus, we investigated if syndemics were present among young sexual-minority women, and if sexual-orientation discrimination was an independent variable of syndemic production. Methods: A total of 467 sexual-minority women between the ages of 18 and 24 completed a cross-sectional online survey regarding their substance use, mental health, sexual behaviors, height, weight, and experiences of discrimination. We used structural equation modeling to investigate the presence of syndemics and their relationship to sexual-orientation discrimination. Results: Heavy episodic drinking, marijuana use, ecstasy use, hallucinogen use, depressive symptoms, multiple sexual partners, and history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) comprised syndemics in this population (chi-square=24.989, P=.201; comparative fit index [CFI]=0.946; root mean square error of approximation [RMSEA]=0.023). Sexual-orientation discrimination is significantly and positively associated with the latent syndemic variable (unstandardized coefficient=0.095, P.05). Conclusions: Syndemics appear to be present and associated with sexual-orientation discrimination among young sexual-minority women.
