The influence of structural defects on intra-granular critical currents of bulk MgB2
Bulk MgB2 samples were prepared under different synthesis conditions and
analyzed by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The critical current
densities were determined from the magnetization versus magnetic field curves
of bulk and powder-dispersed-in-epoxy samples. Results show that through a slow
cooling process, the oxygen dissolved in bulk MgB2 at high synthesis
temperatures can segregate and form nanometer-sized coherent precipitates of
Mg(B,O)2 in the MgB2 matrix. Magnetization measurements indicate that these
precipitates act as effective flux pinning centers and therefore significantly

Developing Children's Oral Health Assessment Toolkits Using Machine Learning Algorithm.
ObjectivesEvaluating children's oral health status and treatment needs is challenging. We aim to build oral health assessment toolkits to predict Children's Oral Health Status Index (COHSI) score and referral for treatment needs (RFTN) of oral health. Parent and Child toolkits consist of short-form survey items (12 for children and 8 for parents) with and without children's demographic information (7 questions) to predict the child's oral health status and need for treatment.MethodsData were collected from 12 dental practices in Los Angeles County from 2015 to 2016. We predicted COHSI score and RFTN using random Bootstrap samples with manually introduced Gaussian noise together with machine learning algorithms, such as Extreme Gradient Boosting and Naive Bayesian algorithms (using R). The toolkits predicted the probability of treatment needs and the COHSI score with percentile (ranking). The performance of the toolkits was evaluated internally and externally by residual mean square error (RMSE), correlation, sensitivity and specificity.ResultsThe toolkits were developed based on survey responses from 545 families with children aged 2 to 17 y. The sensitivity and specificity for predicting RFTN were 93% and 49% respectively with the external data. The correlation(s) between predicted and clinically determined COHSI was 0.88 (and 0.91 for its percentile). The RMSEs of the COHSI toolkit were 4.2 for COHSI (and 1.3 for its percentile).ConclusionsSurvey responses from children and their parents/guardians are predictive for clinical outcomes. The toolkits can be used by oral health programs at baseline among school populations. The toolkits can also be used to quantify differences between pre- and post-dental care program implementation. The toolkits' predicted oral health scores can be used to stratify samples in oral health research.Knowledge transfer statementThis study creates the oral health toolkits that combine self- and proxy- reported short forms with children's demographic characteristics to predict children's oral health and treatment needs using Machine Learning algorithms. The toolkits can be used by oral health programs at baseline among school populations to quantify differences between pre and post dental care program implementation. Angular dependent vortex pinning mechanisms in YBCO coated conductors and thin films
We present a comparative study of the angular dependent critical current
density in YBa2Cu3O7 films deposited on IBAD MgO and on single crystal MgO and
SrTiO3 substrates. We identify three angular regimes where pinning is dominated
by different types of correlated and uncorrelated defects. We show that those
regimes are present in all cases, indicating that the pinning mechanisms are
the same, but their extension and characteristics are sample dependent,
reflecting the quantitative differences in texture and defect density. In
particular, the more defective nature of the films on IBAD turns into an
advantage as it results in stronger vortex pinning, demonstrating that the
critical current density of the films on single crystals is not an upper limit
for the performance of the IBAD coated conductors.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. Submitted to AP

Computerized adaptive testing and short form development for child and adolescent oral health patient-reported outcomes measurement.
ObjectivesTo develop computerized adaptive testing (CAT) and short forms of self-report oral health measures that are predictive of both the children's oral health status index (COHSI) and the children's oral health referral recommendation (COHRR) scales, for children and adolescents, ages 8-17.Material and methodsUsing final item calibration parameters (discrimination and difficulty parameters) from the item response theory analysis, we performed post hoc CAT simulation. Items most frequently administered in the simulation were incorporated for possible inclusion in final oral health assessment toolkits, to select the best performing eight items for COHSI and COHRR.ResultsTwo previously identified unidimensional sets of self-report items consisting of 19 items for the COHSI and 22 items for the COHRR were administered through CAT resulting in eight-item short forms for both the COHSI and COHRR. Correlations between the simulated CAT scores and the full item bank representing the latent trait are r = .94 for COHSI and r = .96 for COHRR, respectively, which demonstrated high reliability of the CAT and short form.ConclusionsUsing established rigorous measurement development standards, the CAT and corresponding eight-item short form items for COHSI and COHRR were developed to assess the oral health status of children and adolescents, ages 8-17. These measures demonstrated good psychometric properties and can have clinical utility in oral health screening and evaluation and clinical referral recommendations
Properties of recent IBAD-MOCVD Coated Conductors relevant to their high field, low temperature magnet use
BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorods are now incorporated into production IBAD-MOCVD coated
conductors. Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and
BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations
at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO
nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density
Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless
strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the
tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is moderated by BZO
and we define a new figure of merit that may be helpful for magnet design - the
OADI (Off-Axis Double Ic), which clearly shows that BZO broadens the ab-plane
peak and thus raises Jc 5-30{\deg} away from the tape plane, where the most
critical approach to Ic occurs in many coil designs. We describe some
experimental procedures that may make critical current Ic tests of these very
high current tapes more tractable at 4.2 K, where Ic exceeds 1000 A even for 4
mm wide tape with only 1 micron thickness of superconductor. A positive
conclusion is that BZO is very beneficial for the Jc characteristics at 4.2 K,
just as it is at higher temperatures, where the correlated c-axis pinning
effects of the nanorods are much more obvious
Microstructure and high critical current of powder in tube MgB2
We report dc transport and magnetization measurements of Jc in MgB2 wires
fabricated by the powder-in-tube method, using commercial MgB2 powder with 5
%at Mg powder added as an additional source of magnesium, and stainless steel
as sheath material. By appropriate heat treatments, we have been able to
increase Jc by more than one order of magnitude from that of the as-drawn wire.
We show that one beneficial effect of the annealing is the elimination of most
of the micro-cracks, and we correlate the increase in Jc with the disappearance

Swope Supernova Survey 2017a (SSS17a), the Optical Counterpart to a Gravitational Wave Source
On 2017 August 17, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory
(LIGO) and the Virgo interferometer detected gravitational waves emanating from
a binary neutron star merger, GW170817. Nearly simultaneously, the Fermi and
INTEGRAL telescopes detected a gamma-ray transient, GRB 170817A. 10.9 hours
after the gravitational wave trigger, we discovered a transient and fading
optical source, Swope Supernova Survey 2017a (SSS17a), coincident with
GW170817. SSS17a is located in NGC 4993, an S0 galaxy at a distance of 40
megaparsecs. The precise location of GW170817 provides an opportunity to probe
the nature of these cataclysmic events by combining electromagnetic and

Patients' experiences of illness, operation and outcome with reference to gastro-oesophageal reflux disease.
Background. Describing the illness-story from a patient perspective could increase understanding of living with a chronic disease for health professionals and others, facilitate decision-making about treatment and enhance information about the outcome from a patient perspective. Aim. To illuminate patients' illness experiences of having a gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), going through surgery and the outcome. Methods. Twelve patients were interviewed 5 years after having had the operation; six patients had had fundoplication via laparoscopy and six via open surgery. Each patient was asked to talk openly about their experiences, thoughts, feelings and consequences of living with the illness, going through surgery and the period from surgery to the day of interview. A qualitative content analysis was performed concerning the context of the data and its meaning. Findings. Three central categories were identified and nine subcategories: living with GORD- symptoms of the disease affecting daily living, taking medicines, work, family and social life; concerns related to surgery- decision-making about the operation, influence by physicians; life after the operation- outcomes and consequences, side-effects and complications of the operation, sick leave, information and sharing experiences with future patients. All patients were free from symptoms of the illness after surgery independent of type of surgery, but side-effects from surgical treatment varied individually. Interviewees would have liked information concerning side-effects after surgery from previous patients. Conclusions. This study contributes to knowledge about patients' long-term suffering, their control of symptoms and how they have tried to cure themselves, but also about their concerns about surgery and the importance of surgical treatment to their quality of life. They wanted information about treatment, outcome and consequences, not only from a health care perspective but also from previous patients having had the same treatment
