Companion cropping for organic field vegetables (OF0181)
Typical organic crop rotations are extensive with at least one year in four as a fertility building crop. However, the economic viability of organic systems may be compromised by having 75% or less of the farm productive at one time, limited further by the absence of the Arable Area Payments Scheme, particularly Set-aside, for vegetable crops. In addition, the system gives rise to a high fertility/low fertility sequence which is inefficient in terms of nutrient management (particularly nitrogen). To try to address this, the use of permanent beds of companion crop grown alongside the vegetable crops has been developed under various conditions around the world and is perceived as a possible alternative in organic husbandry. Companion crops also have the potential to reduce the impact of pests and weeds. A potential disadvantage of companion crops is competition with crop plants for space, light, water and nutrients. The companion crop, therefore, is likely to have to be mown or grazed to control competition and encourage nutrient transfer. On the positive side, companion crops have the potential to reduce the impact of pests, and weeds. The challenge is, therefore, to develop appropriate crop layouts and machinery to balance these interactions and result in profitable crop production.
Project OF0181 was delivered with Elm Farm Research Centre and was guided by a Steering Group. The core of the project was the further development and evaluation of a seven-crop companion crop system initially developed by Professor Martin Wolfe at Wakelyns Agroforesty, Fressingfield, Suffolk, a Soil Association registered organic farm. The system was based on 1.5 m beds, with three 20 cm vegetable rows alternating with 30 cm leguminous companion strips. Within each bed, there was a seven-course crop rotation: potatoes, alliums, Umbellifers, spring oats, legumes, brassicas and spring wheat. To establish and manage this system, Martin Wolfe and his co-workers (P. J. & M. J. Wards) had by spring 1999 developed a range of purpose-built machinery including a strip rotavator, 3 row precision seed drill, straight tine or L-blade strip cultivator with/without discs, rotary strip mower, strip irrigator and a strip compost spreader.
Two large experiments were established at Wakelyns in spring 1999; it was planned that these be continued for the full three years of the project. One experiment compared a factorial combination of a) three companion crops: white clover, vetch and nil, b) companion crop mowings left to fall, or deflected onto the vegetable rows, and c) the presence or absence of added composted manure. A second experiment compared factorial combinations of winter cover crops of rye and vetch grown in the vegetable rows with additional approved inputs of phosphorus and potassium. All seven crops were grown but assessments were made only on brassicas, alliums and carrots.
Conclusions
Companion cropping has the potential to improve economic viability, and pest, disease and annual weed control in organic cropping systems, particularly in field vegetables which are not supported by the Arable Area Payment Scheme. However, in practice, in project OF0181 these benefits were not realised:
• Grass weeds were favoured and were difficult to control once established.
• There were problems with seedbed preparation and crop establishment; these may be less on lighter soils.
• Some crop species were better suited to companion cropping. In 2000 and 2001, there was:
- a high yield in both years from beetroot, spinach, chard and kale;
- a high yield in one year from Brassicas (some cabbage, swede, turnip), endive, lettuce, parsley and parsnip;
- a low yield in both years from Allium crops (leeks, onions), Brassica (sprouts, some cabbage, calabrese), carrots, celeriac, broad and dwarf beans.
• Clover used soil available nitrogen in preference to fixed nitrogen, starving less competitive crops such as alliums of the nutrient and resulting in very low yields.
• Even with reliable yields, companion cropping in the form tested may only be suited to small-scale labour-intensive production.
A system with greater spatial separation of companion and vegetable crops, with vegetables and companion crops grown alone in separate beds or strips, may give the reported benefits of companion cropping with less competition and be practical for large scale production

When Is a Sprint a Sprint? A Review of the Analysis of Team-Sport Athlete Activity Profile
The external load of a team-sport athlete can be measured by tracking technologies, including global positioning systems (GPS), local positioning systems (LPS) and vision-based systems. These technologies allow for the calculation of displacement, velocity and acceleration during a match or training session. The accurate quantification of these variables is critical so that meaningful changes in team-sport athlete external load can be detected. High-velocity running, including sprinting, may be important for specific team-sport match activities, including evading an opponent or creating a shot on goal. Maximal accelerations are energetically demanding and frequently occur from a low velocity during team-sport matches. Despite extensive research, conjecture exists regarding the thresholds by which to classify the high velocity and acceleration activity of a team-sport athlete. There is currently no consensus on the definition of a sprint or acceleration effort, even within a single sport. The aim of this narrative review was to examine the varying velocity and acceleration thresholds reported in athlete activity profiling. The purposes of this review were therefore to (1) identify the various thresholds used to classify high-velocity or –intensity running plus accelerations; (2) examine the impact of individualized thresholds on reported team-sport activity profile; (3) evaluate the use of thresholds for court-based team-sports and; (4) discuss potential areas for future research. The presentation of velocity thresholds as a single value, with equivocal qualitative descriptors, is confusing when data lies between two thresholds. In Australian football, sprint efforts have been defined as activity > 4.00 m·s-1 or > 4.17 m·s-1. Acceleration thresholds differ across the literature, with > 1.11 m·s-2, 2.78 m·s-2, 3.00 m·s-2 and 4.00 m·s-2 utilized across a number of sports. It is difficult to compare literature on field-based sports due to inconsistencies in velocity and acceleration thresholds, even within a single sport. Velocity and acceleration thresholds have been determined from physical capacity tests. Limited research exists on the classification of velocity and acceleration data by female team-sport athletes. Alternatively, data mining techniques may be used to report team-sport athlete external load, without the requirement of arbitrary or physiologically defined thresholds
Natural History of the Peregrine Falcon in the Keewatin District of the Northwest Territories
A dense, productive population of peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) was studied for five years on a 450 sq km study area located along the northwest coast of Hudson Bay. The mean internest distance of 3.3 km represents the highest nesting density on record for the species in the Arctic. Morphometric and plumage characteristics of adults in the population suggest they are intermediate between F.p. tundrius from farther north and F.p. anatum from boreal regions to the south and west. The migratory pathway used by this population of birds is similar to that used by peregrines from Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. Both timing of arrival on the breeding grounds and clutch initiation are influenced strongly by spring weather patterns. Nineteen species of birds and three species of mammals were used as prey; however, in most years the bulk of the diet consisted of six species of birds and one mammal. A dramatic increase in the density of territorial peregrines in a year of high microtine rodent abundance, coupled with changes in various measures of reproductive performance, suggested that use of lemmings by falcons can be significant in some years. Suggestions that peregrines lay fewer eggs in the arctic part of their range were not supported. Broods hatched asynchronously, with the last-hatched young dying in about one-half of all broods of four. Surviving last-hatched young in broods of four grew at rates similar to older nest mates. General practice ethnicity data: evaluation of a tool
INTRODUCTION: There is evidence that the collection of ethnicity data in New Zealand primary care is variable and that data recording in practices does not always align with the procedures outlined in the Ethnicity Data Protocols for the Health and Disability Sector. In 2010, The Ministry of Health funded the development of a tool to audit the collection of ethnicity data in primary care. The aim of this study was to pilot the Ethnicity Data Audit Tool (EAT) in general practice. The goal was to evaluate the tool and identify recommendations for its improvement.
METHODS: Eight general practices in the Waitemata District Health Board region participated in the EAT pilot. Feedback about the pilot process was gathered by questionnaires and interviews, to gain an understanding of practices’ experiences in using the tool. Questionnaire and interview data were analysed using a simple analytical framework and a general inductive method.
FINDINGS: General practice receptionists, practice managers and general practitioners participated in the pilot. Participants found the pilot process challenging but enlightening. The majority felt that the EAT was a useful quality improvement tool for handling patient ethnicity data. Larger practices were the most positive about the tool.
CONCLUSION: The findings suggest that, with minor improvements to the toolkit, the EAT has the potential to lead to significant improvements in the quality of ethnicity data collection and recording in New Zealand general practices. Other system-level factors also need to be addressed
Fermi Surface as the Driving Mechanism for Helical Antiferromagnetic Ordering in Gd-Y Alloys
The first direct experimental evidence for the Fermi surface (FS) driving the
helical antiferromagnetic ordering in a gadolinium-yttrium alloy is reported.
The presence of a FS sheet capable of nesting is revealed, and the nesting
vector associated with the sheet is found to be in excellent agreement with the

The number of beams in IMRT - theoretical investigations and implications for single-arc IMRT
The first purpose of this paper is to shed some new light on the old question
of selecting the number of beams in intensity-modulated radiation therapy
(IMRT). The second purpose is to illuminate the related issue of discrete
static beam angles vs. rotational techniques, which has recently re-surfaced
due to the advancement of volumetric arc therapy (VMAT). A specific objective
is to find analytical expressions that allow one to address the points raised
above. To make the problem mathematically tractable, it is assumed that the
depth dose is flat and that the lateral dose profile can be approximated by
polynomials, specifically Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind, of finite
degree. The application of methods known from image reconstruction then allows
one to answer the first question above as follows: The required number of beams
is determined by the maximum degree of the polynomials used in the
approximation of the beam profiles, which is a measure of the dose variability.
There is nothing to be gained by using more beams. In realistic cases, in which
the variability of the lateral dose profile is restricted in several ways, the
required number of beams is of the order of 10 to 20. The consequence of
delivering the beams with a `leaf sweep' technique during continuous rotation
of the gantry, as in VMAT, is also derived in analytical form. The main effect
is that the beams fan out, but the effect near the axis of rotation is small.
This result can serve as a theoretical justification of VMAT. Overall the
analytical derivations in this paper, albeit based on strong simplifications,
provide new insights into, and a deeper understanding of, the beam angle
problem in IMRT
Fast-track pathway for elective caesarean section: a quality improvement initiative to promote day 1 discharge.
Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) aims to improve perioperative care, hasten recovery to the normal physiological state and shorten length of stay (LoS). There is evidence that ERAS programmes following elective caesarean section (ELCS) confer benefit through faster return to physiological state and reduced LoS for mother and baby. Baseline audit of ELCS in 2013 revealed a mean LoS of 3 days. We piloted an ERAS discharge pathway promoting day 2 discharge, which rose from 5.0% to 40.2%. 19.2% of women went home on day 1. Many women fed back that they would prefer day 1 discharge. We hypothesised that a day 1 discharge pathway for low-risk women could benefit both women and services at our maternity unit. From October 2015, we developed a 'fast-track pathway' (FTP) using a Plan-Do-Study-Act approach. Between October 2015 and April 2016, we prospectively audited clinical outcomes, LoS and maternal satisfaction from all women placed on the FTP. We held regular multidisciplinary team meetings to allow contemporaneous analysis. Satisfaction was analysed by Likert scale at postoperative surveys. Women were identified in antenatal clinic after meeting predefined low-risk criteria. 27.3% of women (n=131/479) delivering by ELCS entered the FTP. 76.2% of women on the FTP were discharged on day 1. Mean LoS fell to 1.31 days. 94.2% of women who established breast feeding at day 1 were still breast feeding at 7 days. Overall satisfaction at day 7 was 4.71 on a 5-point Likert scale. 73.1% of women reported good pain control. Additional financial savings are estimated at £99 886 annually. There were no related cases of readmission. Day 1 discharge after ELCS is safe and acceptable in carefully selected, low-risk women and has high satisfaction. There may be resultant financial savings and improved flow through a maternity unit with no detected adverse effect on breast feeding, maternal morbidity or postnatal readmissions
