Chaos in effective classical and quantum dynamics
We investigate the dynamics of classical and quantum N-component phi^4
oscillators in the presence of an external field. In the large N limit the
effective dynamics is described by two-degree-of-freedom classical Hamiltonian
systems. In the classical model we observe chaotic orbits for any value of the
external field, while in the quantum case chaos is strongly suppressed. A
simple explanation of this behaviour is found in the change in the structure of
the orbits induced by quantum corrections. Consistently with Heisenberg's
principle, quantum fluctuations are forced away from zero, removing in the
effective quantum dynamics a hyperbolic fixed point that is a major source of
chaos in the classical model.Comment: 6 pages, RevTeX, 5 figures, uses psfig, changed indroduction and

Theoretical Models of Superbursts on Accreting Neutron Stars
We carry out a general-relativistic global linear stability analysis of the
amassed carbon fuel on the surface of an accreting neutron star to determine
the conditions under which superbursts occur. We reproduce the general
observational characteristics of superbursts, including burst fluences,
recurrence times, and the absence of superbursts on stars with accretion rates
below 10% of the Eddington limit. By comparing our results with observations,
we are able to set constraints on neutron star parameters such as the stellar
radius and neutrino cooling mechanism in the core. Specifically, we find that
accreting neutron stars with ordered crusts and highly efficient neutrino
emission in their cores (due to direct URCA or pionic reactions, for example)
produce extremely energetic (> 10^44 ergs) superbursts which are inconsistent
with observations, in agreement with previous investigations. Also, because of
pycnonuclear burning of carbon, they do not have superbursts in the range of
accretion rates at which superbursts are actually observed unless the crust is
very impure. Stars with less efficient neutrino emission (due to modified URCA
reactions, for example) produce bursts that agree better with observations.
Stars with highly inefficient neutrino emission in their cores produce bursts
that agree best with observations. All systems that accrete primarily hydrogen
and in which superbursts are observed show evidence of H- and He-burning
delayed mixed bursts. We speculate that delayed mixed bursts provide sufficient
amounts of carbon fuel for superbursts and are thus a prerequisite for having
superbursts. We compare our global stability analysis to approximate one-zone
criteria used by other authors and identify a particular set of approximations
that give accurate results for most choices of parameters. (abstract truncated)Comment: 43 pages, 18 figures, accepted by Ap
Disentangling the Dynamical Mechanisms for Cluster Galaxy Evolution
The determination of the dynamical causes of the morphological Butcher-Oemler
(BO) effect, or the rapid transformation of a large population of late-type
galaxies to earlier Hubble types in the rich cluster environment between
intermediate redshifts and the local universe, has been an important unsolved
problem which is central to our understanding of the general problems of galaxy
formation and evolution. In this article, we survey the existing proposed
mechanisms for cluster galaxy transformation, and discuss their relevance and
limitations to the explanation of the morphological BO effect. A new infrared
diagnostic approach is devised to disentangle the relative importance of
several major physical mechanisms to account for the BO effect, and an example
of the first application of this procedure to a single rich, intermediate
redshift galaxy cluster is given to demonstrate the viability of this approach.
The preliminary result of this analysis favors the interaction-enhanced secular
evolution process as the major cause of the cluster-galaxy morphological
transformation. This conclusion is also supported by a wide range of other
published results which are assembled here to highlight their implications on a
coherent physical origin for the morphological BO effect.Comment: Accepted for publication in the PAS
Neutral pion production in solar flares
The Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) on SMM has detected more than 130 flares with emission approx 300 keV. More than 10 of these flares were detected at photon energies 10 MeV. Although the majority of the emission at 10 MeV must be from electron bremsstrahlung, at least two of the flares have spectral properties 40 MeV that require gamma rays from the decay of neutral pions. It is found that pion production can occur early in the impulsive phase as defined by hard X-rays near 100 keV. It is also found in one of these flares that a significant portion of this high-energy emission is produced well after the impulsive phase. This extended production phase, most clearly observed at high energies, may be a signature of the acceleration process which produces solar energetic particles (SEP's) in space

Zero mode in the time-dependent symmetry breaking of theory
We apply the quartic exponential variational approximation to the symmetry
breaking phenomena of scalar field in three and four dimensions. We calculate
effective potential and effective action for the time-dependent system by
separating the zero mode from other non-zero modes of the scalar field and
treating the zero mode quantum mechanically. It is shown that the quantum
mechanical properties of the zero mode play a non-trivial role in the symmetry
breaking of the scalar theory.Comment: 10 pages, 3 figure
