The Cost to and the Public Relation Effects of Federal Education Dollars to the Local School District
The costs and public effects of using federal vocational education dollars in the local school district were studied. Twenty-five Washington school districts were randomly selected. Financial data were compiled and a survey distributed to these schools. The results showed increased use of federal vocational monies resulted in increased local administration, as school size decreased use of federal monies decreased, smaller schools spend more money per student, and local advisory committees feel that vocational education needs federal monies
The effect of atomic oxygen on polysiloxane-polyimide for spacecraft applications in low Earth orbit
Polysiloxane-polyimide films are of interest as a replacement for polyimide Kapton in the Space Station Freedom solar array blanket. The blanket provides the structural support for the solar cells as well as providing transport of heat away from the back of the cells. Polyimide Kapton would be an ideal material to use; however, its high rate of degradation due to attack by atomic oxygen in low Earth orbit, at the altitudes Space Station Freedom will fly, is of such magnitude that if left unprotected, the blanket will undergo structural failure in much less than the desired 15 year operating life. Polysiloxane-polyimide is of interest as a replacement material because it should from its own protective silicon dioxide coating upon exposure to atomic oxygen. Mass, optical, and photomicrographic data obtained in the evaluation of the durability of polysiloxane-polyimide to an atomic oxygen environment are presented
Photodisintegration of light elements in nuclear emulsions
The cross-sections for the reactions C-12 (gamma, 3 alpha) and O-16 (gamma, 4 alpha) have been measured as a function of photon energy from threshold to 50 Mev, and agreement with known levels is good in the former case. New levels are observed in the region 23 to 30 Mev for the latter reaction. The cross section for the reaction N-14 (gamma, 2 alpha) is observed to peak at 25 Mev, with a long tail to 45 Mev. The reaction N-14 (gamma, np)3 alpha occurs at least four times as often as the reaction N-14 (gamma, d)3 alpha
