Canna Multibeam Survey on the Northern Lighthouse Board vessel, Polestar. BGS Survey - 2011_7 : 1st ā 11th July 2011
The British Geological Survey (BGS), The Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) and Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) are part of a collaboration to collect multibeam bathymetry. Two BGS Hydrographic Surveyors, Nick Smart and Rhys Cooper boarded the Polestar along with Laura Clark from SNH on the 1st of July to carry out a survey around the Isle of Canna on the west coast of Scotland. The survey extent was designed to fit in with pre-existing areas surveyed as part of the Marine and Coastal Agency Civil Hydrography Programme (CHP). The survey finished on the 11th of July, allowing only 10 days to complete a significant area (approximately 300km2)
Reflective practice undertaken by healthcare and medical trainees and practitioners: so whatās all the fuss about?
Having worked with healthcare and medical trainees and practitioners for a number of years as medical educators, we have often noticed a glazed, irritated or frustrated look in the eyes of many of them when the terms reflective practice or reflection are used. These two sets of words have come to be known as the āRā words. This has prompted us to consider the modern
origins of the concept of reflective practice and also the etymological roots and philosophical foundation of the meaning of the term āpracticeā. At the same time, this has raised issues of who owns the process and product of reflective practice (e.g. individuals; peers; tutors; assessors) and whether the outcomes should be formally assessed given the associated ethical and
authenticity dilemmas that often seem to arise from such assessment
Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol County: Increasing Program Awareness for the Help at Home Program
We came up with the idea of using a cost analysis to clearly demonstrate the advantage of home care vs. hospitalization. John Hopkins Bay view Medical Center conducted a study within their geriatrics unit to test their Hospital At Home program against typical on-site care at the hospital. The study was held over the course of 30 days involving hundreds of patients across three cities and the results were staggering. Not only was at home care 32% cheaper (7,480) but also overall customer satisfaction was significantly higher
Perceptually smooth timbral guides by state-space analysis of phase-vocoder parameters
Sculptor is a phase-vocoder-based package of programs
that allows users to explore timbral manipulation
of sound in real time. It is the product
of a research program seeking ultimately to perform
gestural capture by analysis of the sound a
performer makes using a conventional instrument.
Since the phase-vocoder output is of high dimensionality ā
typically more than 1,000 channels per
analysis frameāmapping phase-vocoder output to
appropriate input parameters for a synthesizer is
only feasible in theory
OCIS Public Goods Tool Development
There has recently been an increase in interest amongst policy-makers in the question of whether farming provides a āpublic goodā beyond the simple production of food, which justifies support from, for instance, EU agricultural policy. Benefits such as an improved environment or better water quality can be perceived to be public goods. It is the provision of these sorts of benefits which may be used in the future to justify continued support of the agricultural sector through subsidies.
Given the current level of interest in this topic Natural England, with the approval of Defra, through OCIS (Organic Conversion Information Service), wished to create a tool which could be used by an advisor or an informed land owner to assess the public good provided by a/their farm. Thus, the OCIS Public Good Tool was developed
Neurodiversity HCI
The objective of this paper is to introduce neurodiversity movement. Like Feminist HCI[5] neurodiversity critiques the implicit notion of āuserā in the singular. Neurodiversity suggests that current approaches carry with them certain assumptions about the cognitive processing abilities of users which need to be challenged. This paper is concerned with the design and evaluation of interactive systems that are imbued with an awareness of the central commitments of neurodiversity. The paper seeks to identify and promote neurodiversity under the banner of neurodiversity HCI. This paper introduces neurodiversity and then critically evaluates aspects of HCI from the neurodiversity perspective
