Generalised geometry, eleven dimensions and E11
We construct the non-linear realisation of E11 and its first fundamental
representation in eleven dimensions at low levels. The fields depend on the
usual coordinates of space-time as well as two form and five form coordinates.
We derive the terms in the dynamics that contain the three form and six form
fields and show that when we restricted their field dependence to be only on
the usual space-time we recover the correct self-duality relation. Should this
result generalise to the gravity fields then the non-linear realisation is an
extension of the maximal supergravity theory, as previously conjectured. We
also comment on the connections between the different approaches to generalised
geometry.Comment: 17 pages, Trivial typos corrected in version one and a substantial

Generalised Space-time and Gauge Transformations
We consider the generalised space-time introduced by the author in 2003 in
the context of the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and
its first fundamental representation. For all the fields we propose gauge
transformations which are compatible with the underlying E11 structure. A
crucial role is played by the generalised vielbein that the generalised
space-time possess. We work out the explicit form of the gauge transformations,
at low levels, in four, five and eleven dimensions.Comment: 33 page
E11, generalised space-time and equations of motion in four dimensions
We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E11 and
its first fundamental representation at low levels in four dimensions. We
include the fields for gravity, the scalars and the gauge fields as well as the
duals of these fields. The generalised space-time, upon which the fields
depend, consists of the usual coordinates of four dimensional space-time and
Lorentz scalar coordinates which belong to the 56-dimensional representation of
E7. We demand that the equations of motion are first order in derivatives of
the generalised space-time and then show that they are essentially uniquely
determined by the properties of the E11 Kac-Moody algebra and its first
fundamental representation. The two lowest equations correctly describe the
equations of motion of the scalars and the gauge fields once one takes the
fields to depend only on the usual four dimensional space-time
Investigations on the Peach 4 Debrite, a Late Pleistocene Mass Movement on the Northwest British Continental Margin
The Peach 4 debrite is the most recent in a series of large scale Pleistocene MTDs within the Barra fan on the northwest British continental margin. Geophysical data indicate that Peach 4 was formed through a combination of blocky and muddy debris flows and affects an area of ~ 700 km2. BGS core sample 56 -10 36, located directly over the Peach 4 debrite, provides a minimum age of 14.68 ka cal BP for the last major failure. An upwards fining turbidite sequence in BGS core sample 56 -10 239 is associ-ated with increased As and S concentrations, indicators of diagenetic pyrite which forms under anoxic conditions. It is proposed that As and S concentrations may pro-vide a method of distinguishing between contourite and turbidite sedimentation, though further research is required
Genetic Algorithm with Optimal Recombination for the Asymmetric Travelling Salesman Problem
We propose a new genetic algorithm with optimal recombination for the
asymmetric instances of travelling salesman problem. The algorithm incorporates
several new features that contribute to its effectiveness: (i) Optimal
recombination problem is solved within crossover operator. (ii) A new mutation
operator performs a random jump within 3-opt or 4-opt neighborhood. (iii)
Greedy constructive heuristic of W.Zhang and 3-opt local search heuristic are
used to generate the initial population. A computational experiment on TSPLIB
instances shows that the proposed algorithm yields competitive results to other
well-known memetic algorithms for asymmetric travelling salesman problem.Comment: Proc. of The 11th International Conference on Large-Scale Scientific

Higher derivative type II string effective actions, automorphic forms and E11
By dimensionally reducing the ten-dimensional higher derivative type IIA
string theory effective action we place constraints on the automorphic forms
that appear in the effective action in lower dimensions. We propose a number of
properties of such automorphic forms and consider the prospects that E11 can
play a role in the formulation of the higher derivative string theory effective
action.Comment: 34 page
Schistosomes in the Lung: Immunobiology and Opportunity
This is the final version. Available on open access from Frontiers Media via the DOI in this recordSchistosome infection is a major cause of global morbidity, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However, there is no effective vaccine for this major neglected tropical disease, and re-infection routinely occurs after chemotherapeutic treatment. Following invasion through the skin, larval schistosomula enter the circulatory system and migrate through the lung before maturing to adulthood in the mesenteric or urogenital vasculature. Eggs released from adult worms can become trapped in various tissues, with resultant inflammatory responses leading to hepato-splenic, intestinal, or urogenital disease – processes that have been extensively studied in recent years. In contrast, although lung pathology can occur in both the acute and chronic phases of schistosomiasis, the mechanisms underlying pulmonary disease are particularly poorly understood. In chronic infection, egg-mediated fibrosis and vascular destruction can lead to the formation of portosystemic shunts through which eggs can embolise to the lungs, where they can trigger granulomatous disease. Acute schistosomiasis, or Katayama syndrome, which is primarily evident in non-endemic individuals, occurs during pulmonary larval migration, maturation, and initial egg-production, often involving fever and a cough with an accompanying immune cell infiltrate into the lung. Importantly, lung migrating larvae are not just a cause of inflammation and pathology but are a key target for future vaccine design. However, vaccine efforts are hindered by a limited understanding of what constitutes a protective immune response to larvae. In this review, we explore the current understanding of pulmonary immune responses and inflammatory pathology in schistosomiasis, highlighting important unanswered questions and areas for future research.Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC)Manchester Collaborative Centre for Inflammation Research (MCCIR)Royal SocietyWellcome TrustMedical Research Council (MRC)University of Exete
Duality Invariant Actions and Generalised Geometry
We construct the non-linear realisation of the semi-direct product of E(11)
and its first fundamental representation at lowest order and appropriate to
spacetime dimensions four to seven. This leads to a non-linear realisation of
the duality groups and introduces fields that depend on a generalised space
which possess a generalised vielbein. We focus on the part of the generalised
space on which the duality groups alone act and construct an invariant action.Comment: 59 pages (typos fixed and added comments
Metabolic modeling of a mutualistic microbial community
The rate of production of methane in many environments depends upon mutualistic interactions between sulfate-reducing bacteria and methanogens. To enhance our understanding of these relationships, we took advantage of the fully sequenced genomes of Desulfovibrio vulgaris and Methanococcus maripaludis to produce and analyze the first multispecies stoichiometric metabolic model. Model results were compared to data on growth of the co-culture on lactate in the absence of sulfate. The model accurately predicted several ecologically relevant characteristics, including the flux of metabolites and the ratio of D. vulgaris to M. maripaludis cells during growth. In addition, the model and our data suggested that it was possible to eliminate formate as an interspecies electron shuttle, but hydrogen transfer was essential for syntrophic growth. Our work demonstrated that reconstructed metabolic networks and stoichiometric models can serve not only to predict metabolic fluxes and growth phenotypes of single organisms, but also to capture growth parameters and community composition of simple bacterial communities
