Introduction: Only 17-30% of individuals with ID meet the recommendations for daily exercise Populations of individuals with ID have higher BMI, lower cardiovascular fitness and lower muscle strength compared to the general population Individuals with ID also have many dietary challenges necessitating nutritional education and interventions One study following four athletes with ID, showed that pairing athletes with and without (unified sports) resulted in a positive change in social self-concept for athletes with ID Given the above, we: Created a 6-week pilot training and nutrition program for Special Olympics Vermont (SOVT). Assessing the Current State and Potential Needs of the Community for Autism Spectrum Awareness in the Classroom

Introduction: • Number of children with autism and related disorders has been growing in Vermont in the last ten years. • Puppets in Education, Inc (PiE) recently added a new program Friend 2 Friend Programs-Vermont (F2F), that will work with grades K?8 to educate students and teachers about autism spectrum disorders (ASD). • Goal is to promote understanding, acceptance, empathy and mutual friendships between children with ASD or other social communication disorders • Students from the University of Vermont College of Medicine partnered with PiE to evaluate the current needs of the community, determining what information would be most useful in the F2F program.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1036/thumbnail.jp

Assessing Bullying Behaviors and the Efficacy of Bullying Prevention in Fourth Grade Classrooms

Introduction: Bullying has recently gained notoriety as a serious concern across all countries. Bullying is generally acknowledged to be a repeated pattern of abuse communicated to a victim by physical, verbal, or written means which results in bodily harm or emotional injury. Victims of bullying have been shown to be at increased risk for suicide, depression, anxiety, headaches, or difficulty sleeping. Puppets in Education (PiE) is a non-profit organization that uses interactive puppet shows and workshops to educate more than 8,000 children per year about disabilities, cultural diversity, and a wide variety of other issues. By performing its shows in classrooms throughout the state, PiE works to model realistic, challenging situations for children and to provide simple and practical strategies for dealing with them. Focusing our attention on the effects of bullying behaviors in schools, our team worked with PiE and several local fourth grade classes to determine the amount of information children retain from the organization’s bullying prevention program, the effectiveness of the program in addressing and preventing bullying behaviors, and the students’ overall perception of the program.https://scholarworks.uvm.edu/comphp_gallery/1074/thumbnail.jp
