Towards a public analysis database for LHC new physics searches using MadAnalysis 5
We present the implementation, in the MadAnalysis 5 framework, of several
ATLAS and CMS searches for supersymmetry in data recorded during the first run
of the LHC. We provide extensive details on the validation of our
implementations and propose to create a public analysis database within this
framework.Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, 5 recast codes; version accepted by EPJC (Dec

Mediterranean diet vegetable foods protect meat lipids from oxidation during in vitro gastro-intestinal digestion
Meat lipids oxidation during digestion gives rise to a post-prandial oxidative stress condition, which negatively affects human health. Mediterranean Diet vegetables contain high amount of phenolic compounds, which potentially may reduce the oxidative phenomena during digestion. In vitro co-digestion of turkey meat with a typical Mediterranean Diet salad containing tomato, onion, black olives, extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) and basil, dose-dependently reduced lipid peroxidation. Onion and EVOO were more effective in limiting oxidation than the other foods, resulting in negligible concentrations of lipid hydroperoxides after digestion. Specific phenolic classes dominated the phenolic profile of the different foods, such as flavonols and anthocyanins in onion, phenolic acids in tomato and basil, and tyrosol-derivatives in black olives and EVOO. The correlation between lipid peroxidation inhibition, phenolic constituents and antioxidant properties was evaluated by principal component analysis (PCA). Flavonols and anthocyanin were the major contributors to the bioactive response of vegetable foods
INCENTIVES IN SERVICE VALUE NETWORKS – ON TRUTHFULNESS, SUSTAINABILITY, AND INTEROPERABILITY
The concurrence of technical and behavioral trends – such as lightweight approaches for service composition and a rising demand for customized services – fosters the emergence of a novel organizational paradigm: Service Value Networks (SVN). Distributed and highly-specialized service providers contribute to an overall value proposition. SVNs provide means for the ad-hoc composition of services that satisfies individual customers\u27 needs. However, the distributed nature of these environments and the opportunistic behavior of participants require a purposeful design of incentives. Our contribution is threefold: We (i) provide an auction mechanism – the Complex Service Auction – to coordination value creation in SVNs which is incentive compatible in dominant strategies (truthful). To restore budget balance – the prerequisite for a mechanism\u27s sustainability – and to implement incentives that increase a network\u27s degree of interoperability, we (ii) present the Interoperability Transfer Function (ITF). Applying an agent-based simulation method, we (iii) numerically show that this payment scheme limits strategic behavior of service providers and strengthens interoperability endeavors compared to a benchmark transfer function
Metastatic Uterine Leiomyosarcoma in the Upper Buccal Gingiva Misdiagnosed as an Epulis
Uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a rare tumor constituting 1% of all uterine malignancies. This sarcoma demonstrates an aggressive growth pattern with an high rate of recurrence with hematologic dissemination; the most common sites are lung, liver, and peritoneal cavity, head and neck district being rarely interested. Only other four cases of metastasis in the oral cavity have been previously described. The treatment of choice is surgery and the use of adjuvant chemotherapy and radiation has limited impact on clinical outcome. In case of metastases, surgical excision can be performed considering extent of disease, number and type of distant lesions, disease free interval from the initial diagnosis to the time of metastases, and expected life span. We illustrate a case of uterine LMS metastasis in the upper buccal gingiva that occurred during chemotherapy in a 63-year-old woman that underwent a total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy for a diagnosis of LMS staged as pT2bN0 and that developed lung metastases eight months after primary treatment. Surgical excision of the oral mass (previously misdiagnosed as epulis at a dental center) and contemporary reconstruction with pedicled temporalis muscle flap was performed in order to improve quality of life. Even if resection was achieved in free margins, "local" relapse was observed 5 months after surgery
Cooking and In Vitro Digestion Modulate the Anti-Diabetic Properties of Red-Skinned Onion and Dark Purple Eggplant Phenolic Compounds
The intake of phenolic-rich foods is an emerging preventive approach for the management of type 2 diabetes, thanks to the ability of these compounds to inhibit some key metabolic enzymes. In this study, the influence of cooking and in vitro digestion on the α-glucosidase, α-amylase, and dipeptidyl-peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitory activity of red-skinned onion (RSO) and dark purple eggplant (DPE) phenolic fractions was assessed. The applied cooking procedures had different influences on the total and individual phenolic compounds gastrointestinal bioaccessibility. DPE in vitro digested phenolic fractions displayed no inhibitory activity versus α-amylase and DPP-IV, whereas the fried DPE sample exhibited moderate inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase. This sample mainly contained hydroxycinnamic acid amides that can be responsible for the observed effect. Contrariwise, raw and cooked in vitro digested RSO phenolic fractions inhibited all three enzymes but with different effectiveness. Fried and raw RSO samples were the most active against them. Statistical analysis pointed out that quercetin mono-hexosides (mainly quercetin-4′-O-hexoside) were responsible for the inhibition of α-glucosidase, whereas quercetin dihexosides (mainly quercetin-3-O-hexoside-4′-O-hexoside) were responsible for the DPP-IV-inhibitory activity of RSO samples. An accurate design of the cooking methods could be essential to maximize the release of individual phenolic compounds and the related bioactivities
Barium alginate capsules for 3D immobilisation of living cells: morphology, membrane properties and permeability
Encapsulation in a barium alginate membrane is a promising strategy to obtain a three dimensional culture of living cells: membrane properties are crucial for a realistic clinical application. A one-step encapsulation technique, recently developed for controlled release of boar semen, was employed to prepare barium alginate and protamine-alginate membranes: permeability to two model molecules (haemoglobin and glucose) was evaluated. Capsules were evaluated for technological properties and scanning electron microscopy was used to examine the external morphology of the capsules and the 3D distribution of the cells within the core. The results indicate that 3D arrangement and cell shape are maintained, capsule dimensions and mechanical properties can be modulated, as well as their permeability to model molecules such as haemoglobin and glucose
Epidemiology and Impact of Abdominal Oblique Injuries in Major and Minor League Baseball.
BACKGROUND: Oblique injuries are known to be a common cause of time out of play for professional baseball players, and prior work has suggested that injury rates may be on the rise in Major League Baseball (MLB).
PURPOSE: To better understand the current incidence of oblique injuries, determine their impact based on time out of play, and to identify common injury patterns that may guide future injury prevention programs.
STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiological study.
METHODS: Using the MLB Health and Injury Tracking System, all oblique injuries that resulted in time out of play in MLB and Minor League Baseball (MiLB) during the 2011 to 2015 seasons were identified. Player demographics such as age, position/role, and handedness were included. Injury-specific factors analyzed included the following: date of injury, timing during season, days missed, mechanism, side, treatment, and reinjury status.
RESULTS: A total of 996 oblique injuries occurred in 259 (26%) MLB and 737 (74%) MiLB players. Although the injury rate was steady in MiLB, the MLB injury rate declined (P = .037). A total of 22,064 days were missed at a mean rate of 4413 days per season and 22.2 days per injury. The majority of these occurred during batting (n = 455, 46%) or pitching (n = 348, 35%), with pitchers losing 5 days more per injury than batters (P \u3c .001). The leading side was injured in 77% of cases and took 5 days longer to recover from than trailing side injuries (P = .009). Seventy-nine (7.9%) players received either a corticosteroid or platelet-rich plasma injection, and the mean recovery time was 11 days longer compared with those who did not receive an injection (P \u3c .001).
CONCLUSION: Although the rate of abdominal oblique injuries is on the decline in MLB, this is not the case for MiLB, and these injuries continue to represent a significant source of time out of play in professional baseball. The vast majority of injuries occur on the lead side, and these injuries result in the greatest amount time out of play. The benefit of injections for the treatment of oblique injuries remains unknown
