    The Nashville Predators Social Media Audit

    This report and presentation will deliver a comprehensive social media audit completed on the Nashville Predators, a national hockey team. In the end, it will show results of our group’s analysis of the communication strategies on the various platforms that the Nashville Predators use for their business and brand. While we already have prior knowledge and experience in social media, we plan to use the theories and principles to come to even better conclusions about the success of the Nashville Predators’ online presence. The Nashville Predators are known for being a professional hockey team in the NHL. The Predator’s brand is strong with its social media presence. The accounts the Nashville Predators maintain are across the following platforms: Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, Snapchat, TikTok, and Linkedin. The Predators use social media to connect and communicate with fans and followers. All of these accounts are focused on the team as a whole. The analysis revealed that the Nashville Predators do a significant job on their social media platforms when reaching and connecting with their target audience. The accounts often utilize photos, videos, stories, and text-based posts. This creates a variety of content that captures and engages with the audience. In addition to photos from games and press appearances, the feeds often include behind-the-scenes content which may incentivize fans to follow. However, there is room to grow when it comes to community management. This audit will include notes about how they interact with comments and user-generated content. This will provide an in-depth about how the Predator’s utilize their social media presence as a whole. In conclusion, this social media audit report offers the back end information about how the Nashville Predators use social media for strategic communication. This report will not only include an in-depth analysis, but recommendations that can be utilized for strategic communication

    The role of fine sediment characteristics and body size on the vertical movement of a freshwater amphipod

    1. Sedimentation and clogging (colmation) of interstitial pore spaces with fine sediment particles is widely considered to be one of the most significant threats to lotic ecosystem functioning. This paper presents the results of a running water mesocosm study examining the effect of benthic and hyporheic fine sediment loading and particle size on the vertical movement and distribution of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex. 2. A gradient of fine sediment loading and different particle sizes were used to examine the ability of G. pulex from two body size classes to access and migrate vertically within subsurface sediments. 3. We tested three hypotheses: i) sediment loading would modify the distribution of G. pulex by limiting vertical movement; ii) the deposition of large particles and heterogenous sediments would limit the vertical movement of individuals more than homogeneous fine grained sediments; and iii) large bodied individuals would be prevented from migrating vertically with increasing sediment loading and particle size / heterogeneity. 4. Sediment loading, particle size and heterogeneity of deposited sediment had a significant effect on the vertical movement of individuals, with heterogeneous sand (0.125 - 4 mm) acting as the strongest barrier to the vertical movement of individuals through the infilling and clogging of interstitial spaces followed by coarse (1 - 4mm) and fine sand (0.125 - 4 mm). 5. Fine sediment loading and particle size acted as a filter on body size and limited the ability of large bodied individuals to migrate vertically to a greater extent than small bodied individuals. 6. This study demonstrates that the effects of fine sediment on habitat availability and faunal movement is dependent on both sedimentological characteristics and an individual’s body size. The results illustrate the importance of both abiotic and biotic factors when evaluating the ecological 66 effects of fine sediment deposition

    The impact of the 2022 Ukraine/Russian conflict on cancer clinical trials

    Since the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, clinical trial conduct has become extremely challenging due to damage to the healthcare infrastructure and patient displacement. This current study aimed to estimate the number of cancer clinical trials at risk of impact from the conflict. A descriptive analysis and narrative review were completed using data from cancer clinical trials with sites in Russia or Ukraine using the ‘clinical trials.gov’ online database between February 2022 and May 2022. There were 508 clinical trials involving sites in Ukraine or Russia. Most were multinational studies (470 of 508; 93 %). The majority of studies were phase 3 (344 of 508; 68 %) and these also had the largest sample sizes (median 624, range 12–5637). The most common tumour types were lung (128 of 508; 25 %), urogenital (94 of 508; 19 %) and breast (78 of 508; 15 %). A meaningful number of trials had curative intent (129 of 508; 25 %). The most common intervention was immunotherapy-related (218 of 508; 43 %), followed by other targeted therapy (185 of 508; 36 %). Ukraine and Russia are both large centres for global clinical trial activity. The invasion of Ukraine may result in underpowering of international clinical trial results with loss of future recruitment sites for both countries

    On the Directional Derivative of Kemeny's Constant

    In a connected graph, Kemeny's constant gives the expected time of a random walk from an arbitrary vertex xx to reach a randomly-chosen vertex yy. Because of this, Kemeny's constant can be interpreted as a measure of how well a graph is connected. It is generally unknown how the addition or removal of edges affects Kemeny's constant. Inspired by the directional derivative of the normalized Laplacian, we derive the directional derivative of Kemeny's constant for several graph families. In addition, we find sharp bounds for the directional derivative of an eigenvalue of the normalized Laplacian and bounds for the directional derivative of Kemeny's constant

    Determining the Extent of Pioneer Mangrove Acidification on Intertidal Oyster Reefs

    The Indian River Lagoon (IRL) stretches 251 kilometers along Florida’s east coast and is one of the most biodiverse estuaries in North America. Mosquito Lagoon, the northernmost portion of the IRL, is home to mangroves and intertidal oyster reefs that provide numerous ecosystem services. These two habitats are overlapping as climate change drives mangroves poleward. Scientists have documented mangrove expansion and the transition of oyster reef habitat to mangrove islands. Past studies have shown large, adult mangrove stands drive soil acidification. The goal of this study was to understand if stand-alone, or pioneer, Rhizophora mangle (red mangroves) and Avicennia germinans (black mangroves) acidify intertidal Crassostrea virginica (eastern oyster) reef sediment. We collected porewater (i.e., water within sediment) and measured pH with a portable pH meter. Porewater pH was sampled from 0 to 1 meter away from pioneer mangroves in 20 cm increments. Closest to the mangrove trunk, reef sediment pH was significantly more acidic (mean pH of 7.18 for R. mangle and 7.02 for A. germinans) compared to oyster reef-only control areas with a mean pH of 7.44 (p-value \u3c 0.001 for both mangrove species). By 1 meter away from the mangrove trunk, the pH for both mangrove species was no longer significantly different from the control areas (p-value = 1.0), indicating mangrove-driven acidification has a localized effect on oyster reef sediments. Acidification weakens oyster shells, and by understanding the extent of mangroves’ acidic effects on oyster reefs, resource managers can use this information to protect declining oyster reef habitat

    Multi-segment spine kinematics: Relationship with dance training and low back pain

    Background: Spine posture, range of motion (ROM) and movement asymmetry can contribute to low back pain (LBP). These variables may have greater impact in populations required to perform repetitive spine movements, such as dancers; however, there is limited evidence to support this. Research question: What is the influence of dance and LBP on spinal kinematics? Methods: In this cross-sectional study, multi-segment spinal kinematics were examined in 60 female participants, including dancers (n = 21) and non-dancers (n = 39) with LBP (n = 33) and without LBP (n = 27). A nine-camera motion analysis system sampling at 100 Hz was used to assess standing posture, as well as ROM and movement asymmetry for side bend and trunk rotation tasks. A two-way ANOVA was performed for each of the outcome variables to detect any differences between dancers and non-dancers, or individuals with and without LBP. Results: Compared to non-dancers, dancers displayed a flatter upper lumbar angle when standing (p  0.05) or movement asymmetry (p > 0.05). There was no main effect for LBP symptoms on any kinematic measures, and no interaction effect for dance group and LBP on spinal kinematics (p > 0.05). Significance: Female dancers displayed a flatter spine posture and increased spine ROM compared to non-dancers for a select number of spine segments and movement tasks. However, the overall number of differences was small, and no relationship was observed between LBP and spinal kinematics. This suggests that these simple, static posture, ROM, and asymmetry measures often used in clinical practice can provide only limited generalisable information about the impact of dance or LBP on spinal kinematics

    Short message service (SMS) reminders improve treatment attendance in alcohol dependence, but are less effective for patients high in impulsivity

    Background and aims: Poor attendance increases the likelihood of relapse in alcohol dependence treatment. Evidence for improved attendance rates following introduction of short message service (SMS) appointment reminders is available in other health care domains. Patients high in impulsivity, characterized by a lack of planning, may particularly benefit from reminders. The study investigated the impact of SMS reminders on outpatient treatment attendance for alcohol dependence, and whether effects were moderated by impulsivity. Design: Prospective natural history study, with historical case control. Alcohol-dependent outpatients attending treatment received SMS appointment reminders (n = 102). These were compared to a historical control group (n = 91) treated prior to the introduction of SMS (totalling 1149 scheduled sessions). Setting: A metropolitan university hospital alcohol and drug outpatient clinic. Participants: 193 alcohol-dependent patients participated in a 12-week cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) program with a treatment goal of abstinence. Measurements: Trait impulsivity, severity of dependence, psychological distress at baseline. Attendance at each scheduled session. Findings: SMS reminders significantly increased probability of session attendance (0.90 versus 0.84, p =.02). The effect was qualified by a significant SMS x Impulsivity interaction whereby reminders became less effective with increasing patient impulsivity (p =.003). Conclusions: SMS appointment reminders improve treatment attendance for alcohol-dependent outpatients. More impulsive patients benefited less from reminders, suggesting their non-attendance may be related more to motivational factors
