A program for the protection of parks and gardens as historic monuments has been developed in France since the 1980s thanks mainly to a better awareness of the remarkable heritage character of this domain in history of art, formerly relegated to a role of mere picturesque support to architectural monuments. The protection or these green spaces as historic sites often preceded and, consequently, delayed this evolution. Besides, thanks to the gradual structuring of the services in charge of this protection within the Ministry of culture, the very notion of âmonumentâ was extended to include witness accounts of the art of gardens and widened its perimeter of action to more extensive spaces

Global lake thermal regions shift under climate change
Water temperature is critical for the ecology of lakes. However, the ability to predict its spatial and seasonal variation is constrained by the lack of a thermal classification system. Here we define lake thermal regions using objective analysis of seasonal surface temperature dynamics from satellite observations. Nine lake thermal regions are identified that mapped largely contiguously globally, and robustly even for small lakes. The regions differed from other global patterns, and so provide unique information. Using a lake model forced by 21st century climate projections we found that 12, 27 and 66% of lakes will change to a lower latitude thermal region by 2080-2099 for low, medium and high greenhouse gas concentration trajectories (Representative Concentration Pathways 2.6, 6.0 and 8.5) respectively. Under the worst-case scenario, a 79% reduction in the number of lakes in the northernmost thermal region is projected. This thermal region framework will facilitate the global scaling of lake-research

The comparison of two Montpellier churches, Saint-François and Sainte-ThérÚse, reveals something of the principles which have guided protection policies for contemporary architecture in the Languedoc region. Although these two churches were built by the same architect, they show a spirit and stylistic references which are very different. Designed in a new context for church building, that of the separation of church and state in early 20th-century France, these two private constructions are unlike earlier conventual or parish buildings, in terms of the personality of their commissioning clients, their architect and their new functions, as well as in the style of their construction
The campus of the Faculty of Letters and Humanities at todayâs Paul-ValĂ©ry University-Montpellier III is the most successful creation amongst the Montpellier university buildings constructed during the 1960s. The campus originally included the Faculty of Science designed by RenĂ© Egger, the celebrated architect from Marseille. He worked there together with the project architects Jean-Claude Deshons and Philippe Jaulmes, from Montpellier. For the Faculty of Letters and Humanities, these last two architects evolved towards more aesthetic solutions integrating artistic creation (the artistic 1 %), associating architects and artists. Previously, Egger had collaborated with the kinetic Op art artist Victor Vasarely, whose work is beautifully illustrated at Montpellier by the great entrance railing of the campus. Other local artists intervened too in this programme, such as Albert Dupin with his so called âcyclopean wallâ designed for the Art and Archaeology Museum
