PROTECTING DATABASES – A CALL FOR REGULATION

Legislators for intellectual property rights have traditionally balanced protection with user access to the protected property. In particular, information has been treated as deserving of wider access by users. Departure from these norms erodes the very justification for intellectual property rights. However, the combined effects of the sui generis database right and that for technological protection measures for electronic works introduced by the Database and Information Society Directives led to fears of monopoly powers over raw data and information and erosion of the traditional balances. The implementation and application of these measures in the UK and elsewhere appeared to confirm these fears. Given the opportunity to reverse these effects, both the European Court of Justice and the European Commission have failed to redress the balance. Consequently, urgent attention should be paid to control over regulation of database licensing

Introduction: NeighborKeepers (Winooski, VT) is a non-profit, anti-poverty organization that focuses on building supportive friend networks that direct families and individuals toward the resources they need to improve their health, get training and education, find jobs, and discover a sense of purpose and belonging. Neighborkeepers: Buddies for Better HealthAn Intervention to Improve Physical Activity Habits

Introduction: associated health complications have increased steadily across the United States. As a result, physical activity considerations have become a more significant focus of healthcare providers and government agencies. Recent studies suggest that social support network approaches, such as the buddy-system, improve participant adherence to physical activity regimens. Hitchcock is a small town located in Galveston County (Figure 1.1), nestled up on the Texas Gulf Coast. It lies about 40 miles south-east of Houston. The boundaries of the city encloses an area of land of 60.46 sq. miles, an area of water of 31.64 sq. miles at an elevation just 16 feet above sea level. Hitchcock has more undeveloped land (~90% of total area) than the county combined. Its strategic location gives it a driving force of opportunities in the Houston-Galveston Region.The guiding principles for this planning process were Hitchcock’s vision statement and its corresponding goals, which were crafted by the task force.
