First measurements of Collins and Sivers asymmetries at COMPASS

COMPASS is a fixed-target experiment on the SPS M2 beamline at CERN. Its LiD target can be polarised both longitudinally and transversally with respect to the longitudinally polarised 160 GeV/c muon beam. Approximately 20% of the beam-time in 2002, 2003 and 2004 was spent in the transverse configuration, allowing the first measurement of both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on a deuterium target. First results from the the transverse data of the COMPASS run in 2002 are reported here.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure, contribution to parallel session of BARYONS04, Oct 25-29 2004, Palaiseau, France Removed typo, corrected erroneous referenc

    Shuttle car loading system

    Get PDF
A system is described for loading newly mined material such as coal, into a shuttle car, at a location near the mine face where there is only a limited height available for a loading system. The system includes a storage bin having several telescoping bin sections and a shuttle car having a bottom wall that can move under the bin. With the bin in an extended position and filled with coal the bin sections can be telescoped to allow the coal to drop out of the bin sections and into the shuttle car, to quickly load the car. The bin sections can then be extended, so they can be slowly filled with more while waiting another shuttle car

Energy absorbing system for mechanical impacts

System is described based on use of arrangement of crushable hollow spheres bonded together in layers of progressively different diameter, with largest diameter spheres positioned to receive impact forces initially. System is particularly useful for delivery of payloads by air-drop techniques

High temperature underground thermal energy storage system for solar energy

    Get PDF
The activities feasibility of high temperature underground thermal storage of energy was investigated. Results indicate that salt cavern storage of hot oil is both technically and economically feasible as a method of storing huge quantities of heat at relatively low cost. One particular system identified utilizes a gravel filled cavern leached within a salt dome. Thermal losses are shown to be less than one percent of cyclically transferred heat. A system like this having a 40 MW sub t transfer rate capability and over eight hours of storage capacity is shown to cost about $13.50 per KWh sub t

Women at Risk: Why Increasing Numbers of Women Are Failing to Get the Health Care They Need and How the Affordable Care Act Will Help

    Get PDF
Presents findings from the 2010 Biennial Health Insurance Survey about rates of uninsurance and care delayed due to cost among women, as well as obstacles faced in the individual market. Examines how reform provisions will change their access to coverage

The Mystro system: A comprehensive translator toolkit

    Get PDF
Mystro is a system that facilities the construction of compilers, assemblers, code generators, query interpretors, and similar programs. It provides features to encourage the use of iterative enhancement. Mystro was developed in response to the needs of NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC) and enjoys a number of advantages over similar systems. There are other programs available that can be used in building translators. These typically build parser tables, usually supply the source of a parser and parts of a lexical analyzer, but provide little or no aid for code generation. In general, only the front end of the compiler is addressed. Mystro, on the other hand, emphasizes tools for both ends of a compiler

Electronic properties of deep levels in p‐type CdTe

    Get PDF
DLTS and associated electrical measurements were made on unintentionally doped CdTe crystals obtained from several vendors, on Cu‐doped CdTe, and on Te‐annealed CdTe. All of the crystals were p‐type. Four majority carrier deep levels were observed in the temperature range from 100–300 K with activation energies relative to the valence band of 0.2, 0.41, 0.45, and 0.65 eV. Two of these levels were specific to certain crystals while the other two were seen in every sample and are attributed to common impurities or native defects. Fluctuations in the concentrations of levels across samples and as a result of modest sample heating (400 K) were also observed

    Construction of a menu-based system

    Get PDF
The development of the user interface to a software code management system is discussed. The user interface was specified using a grammar and implemented using a LR parser generator. This was found to be an effective method for the rapid prototyping of a menu based system
