Order Parameter Measurements Of Dichroic Dyes Dissolved In Smectic Liquid Crystals That Tilt Without Layer Contraction
Measurements of the orientational order parameter of dissolved dichroic dyes are reported for two smectic-A liquid crystals that tilt in the presence of an in-plane electric field without any decrease in the layer spacing. The dye order parameter is determined by measuring the anisotropic absorption of linearly polarized light. Different dyes are used and measurements are also performed on a smectic liquid crystal that tilts with the expected layer contraction to check how closely the measurements reflect the order parameter of the liquid crystal. The variation of the dye order parameter with electric field is in accordance with the recently proposed model of azimuthal disorder of the tilt angle direction, but the surprising finding is that the local dye orientational order parameter is significantly lower than for the smectic liquid crystal that tilts with the expected layer contraction. This suggests that another mechanism might be contributing significantly to the smectic order, one possibility of which is the tendency for different parts of these siloxane-containing molecules to segregate within each layer. Another possible explanation is that the azimuthal disorder is due to a modulated phase with a high enough density of defects to decrease the value of the local order parameter
Phase Diagrams For The Blue Phases Of Highly Chiral Liquid Crystals
Polarizing microscopy and optical-activity measurements are used to determine the phase diagram for the blue phases of chiral-racemic mixtures of terephthaloyloxy-bis-4-(2\u27-methylbutyl) benzoate. Contrary to an earlier report, it is the second blue phase (BP II) rather than the first blue phase (BP 1) that is not stable relative to the other blue phases at high chirality. With this development, all phase diagrams for the blue phases reported to date have the same topology. Using similar data for two other highly chiral systems, it is found that a simple scaling of the temperature and chiral-fraction axes produces phase diagrams in quantitative agreement with the present results. Thus, in spite of differences in molecular structure, the number of chiral centers, and phase-transition temperatures, these three systems possess remarkably similar phase diagrams and lend evidence for a universal phase diagram for the blue phases
Autocorrelation Of Electrical Noise - An Undergraduate Experiment
An undergraduate experiment is described in which the output of a noise generator is sampled by a computer equipped with a data acquisition board, after which the autocorrelation function is calculated. If the output of the noise generator passes through a low‐pass filter before it is sampled by the computer, then the autocorrelation function is a decreasing exponential function with a decay constant equal to the time constant of the low‐pass filter. The theory necessary to understand this phenomenon involves basic concepts in electrical noise, the analysis of linear systems, and Fourier transforms. Sum Rates, Rate Allocation, and User Scheduling for Multi-User MIMO Vector Perturbation Precoding
This paper considers the multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO)
broadcast channel. We consider the case where the multiple transmit antennas
are used to deliver independent data streams to multiple users via vector
perturbation. We derive expressions for the sum rate in terms of the average
energy of the precoded vector, and use this to derive a high signal-to-noise
ratio (SNR) closed-form upper bound, which we show to be tight via simulation.
We also propose a modification to vector perturbation where different rates can
be allocated to different users. We conclude that for vector perturbation
precoding most of the sum rate gains can be achieved by reducing the rate
allocation problem to the user selection problem. We then propose a
low-complexity user selection algorithm that attempts to maximize the high-SNR
sum rate upper bound. Simulations show that the algorithm outperforms other

Performance Analysis of MIMO-MRC in Double-Correlated Rayleigh Environments
We consider multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transmit beamforming
systems with maximum ratio combining (MRC) receivers. The operating environment
is Rayleigh-fading with both transmit and receive spatial correlation. We
present exact expressions for the probability density function (p.d.f.) of the
output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), as well as the system outage probability.
The results are based on explicit closed-form expressions which we derive for
the p.d.f. and c.d.f. of the maximum eigenvalue of double-correlated complex
Wishart matrices. For systems with two antennas at either the transmitter or
the receiver, we also derive exact closed-form expressions for the symbol error
rate (SER). The new expressions are used to prove that MIMO-MRC achieves the
maximum available spatial diversity order, and to demonstrate the effect of
spatial correlation. The analysis is validated through comparison with

Prevalence and incidence of mental health issues amongst adults with diabetes at risk of foot complications in the European Union: a systematic review protocol.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this systematic review is to evaluate and synthesize the evidence to establish the prevalence and incidence of mental health issues in people at risk of diabetic foot ulceration living within the European Union. INTRODUCTION: Due to the large health and financial burden of diabetic foot ulceration, prevention is a key focus for clinicians and researchers. Current foot ulcer prevention strategies are directed at the assessment and management of physical pathologies and risk factors for diabetic foot ulceration. Psychological burden and risk factors are often overlooked. This review will determine the prevalence and incidence of mental health issues among adults with diabetes mellitus who are at risk of foot ulceration. The review will focus on European Union countries. INCLUSION CRITERIA: Studies considered for inclusion will report on adults with a formal diagnosis of either type 1 or type 2 diabetes mellitus, who are at risk of foot ulceration and mental health issues. Studies will have been completed in the European Union. METHODS: A search of MEDLINE, CINAHL, AMED, Embase, Cochrane CENTRAL, and PsycINFO will be conducted for studies published in or translatable into English. Unpublished and gray literature will be searched. Studies will be selected against the review inclusion/exclusion criteria, and selected studies will be critically appraised, with data extraction and synthesis completed using the relevant JBI systematic review tools. Correlation Length And Chirality Of The Fluctuations In The Isotropic Phase Of Nematic And Cholesteric Liquid Crystals
Light-scattering measurements of the correlation length in the isotropic phase of a nematic liquid crystal reveal a temperature dependence following Landau-de Gennes theory for the isotropic phase with a bare correlation length smaller than has been measured in other liquid crystals. Similar measurements in a cholesteric liquid crystal demonstrate that the correlation length in the isotropic phase is larger than typically found in nematics and that the chirality of the fluctuations in the isotropic phase is slightly higher than the chirality of the cholesteric phase. Landau-de Gennes theory of the cholesteric phase describes the chirality in the cholesteric phase well but predicts that the chirality in the isotropic phase is temperature independent, which is not consistent with the data. There is a discontinuity in the chirality at the cholesteric-isotropic transition of about 15%, which is less than the predictions of Landau-de Gennes theory but more than the typical specific volume discontinuity at transitions to the isotropic phase. Except for a mismatch in the discontinuities at the transition, the chirality data resemble the temperature behavior of variables just below a critical point, in spite of the fact that this system is far from a critical point
