    Kondo resonance narrowing in d- and f-electron systems

    By developing a simple scaling theory for the effect of Hund's interactions on the Kondo effect, we show how an exponential narrowing of the Kondo resonance develops in magnetic ions with large Hund's interaction. Our theory predicts an exponential reduction of the Kondo temperature with spin S of the Hund's coupled moment, a little-known effect first observed in d-electron alloys in the 1960's, and more recently encountered in numerical calculations on multi-band Hubbard models with Hund's interactions. We discuss the consequences of Kondo resonance narrowing for the Mott transition in d-band materials, particularly iron pnictides, and the narrow ESR linewidth recently observed in ferromagnetically correlated f-electron materials.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Uniqueness of a Negative Mode About a Bounce Solution

    We consider the uniqueness problem of a negative eigenvalue in the spectrum of small fluctuations about a bounce solution in a multidimensional case. Our approach is based on the concept of conjugate points from Morse theory and is a natural generalization of the nodal theorem approach usually used in one dimensional case.     We show results on the vortex core dissipation through current-voltage measurements under applied pressure and magnetic field in the superconducting phase of CeCoIn5_5. We find that as soon as the system becomes superconducting, the vortex core resistivity increases sharply as the temperature and magnetic field decrease. The sharp increase in flux flow resistivity is due to quasiparticle scattering on critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations. The strength of magnetic fluctuations below the superconducting transition suggests that magnetism is complimentary to superconductivity and therefore must be considered in order to fully account for the low-temperature properties of CeCoIn5_5.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Fractionalized Fermi liquids

    In spatial dimensions d >= 2, Kondo lattice models of conduction and local moment electrons can exhibit a fractionalized, non-magnetic state (FL*) with a Fermi surface of sharp electron-like quasiparticles, enclosing a volume quantized by (\rho_a-1)(mod 2), with \rho_a the mean number of all electrons per unit cell of the ground state. Such states have fractionalized excitations linked to the deconfined phase of a gauge theory. Confinement leads to a conventional Fermi liquid state, with a Fermi volume quantized by \rho_a (mod 2), and an intermediate superconducting state for the Z_2 gauge case.
