    Dual band combiner for horn antenna

    A corrugated horn antenna, adapted to be coupled to a waveguide at its apex for X-band excitation is further adapted to be connected to waveguides through a circumferential slot for S-band excitation at four distinct phases selected for the desired S-band polarization. The circumferential slot is positioned along the axial length of the horn for good impedance matching and is provided with an X-band choke in the form of two concentric choke slots. For further improvement in impedance matching, the second (outer) choke slot is divided by plugs into four segments that coincide with waveguide ports for the four distinct phases of the S-band

    An agent acting under uncertainty regarding how it should complete the task assigned to it by its human user can learn more about how it should behave by posing queries to its human user. Asking too many queries, however, may risk requiring undue attentional demand of the user, and so the agent should prioritize asking the most valuable queries. For decision-making agents, Expected Value of Information (EVOI) measures the value of a query, and so given a set of queries the agent can ask, the agent should ask the query that is expected to maximally improve its performance by selecting the query with highest EVOI in its set. Unfortunately, to compute the EVOI of a query, the agent must consider how each possible response would influence its future behavior, which makes query selection particularly challenging in settings where planning the agent's behavior would be expensive even without the added complication of considering queries to ask, especially when there are many potential queries the agent should consider. The focus of this dissertation is on developing query selection algorithms that can be feasibly applied to such settings. The main novel approach studied, Wishful Query Projection (WQP), is based on the intuition that the agent should consider which query to ask on the basis of obtaining knowledge that would help it resolve a particular dilemma that it wishes could be resolved, as opposed to blindly searching its entire query set in hopes of finding one that would give it valuable knowledge. In implementing WQP, this dissertation contributes algorithms that are founded upon the following novel result: for myopic settings, when the agent can ask any query as long as the query has no more than some set number of possible responses, the best query takes the form of asking the user to choose from a specified subset of ways for the agent to behave. The work presented shows that WQP selects queries with near-optimal EVOI when the agent's query set is (1) balanced in the range of queries it contains; and (2) rich in terms of the highest contained query EVOI.PhDComputer Science and EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     On the Red-Green-Blue Model

    We experimentally study the red-green-blue model, which is a sytem of loops obtained by superimposing three dimer coverings on offset hexagonal lattices. We find that when the boundary conditions are ``flat'', the red-green-blue loops are closely related to SLE_4 and double-dimer loops, which are the loops formed by superimposing two dimer coverings of the cartesian lattice. But we also find that the red-green-blue loops are more tightly nested than the double-dimer loops. We also investigate the 2D minimum spanning tree, and find that it is not conformally invariant.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

    Acute complete heart block in dogs

    A study has been conducted immediately and up to 18 days after the surgical production of complete heart block in dogs. Immediately after surgery cardiac output, coronary flow, and mean arterial pressure were reduced in rough proportion to the degree of bradycardia. In time, these measures began to return toward preoperative levels. Paralleling the diminished left ventricular work was a diminished left ventricular oxygen consumption with little consequent change in myocardial efficiency. Small rises were detected in central venous pressure. At autopsy, the only unequivocal abnormality was myocardial hypertrophy which became measurable between 2 and 18 days after operation

    John Y. Templeton III: Pioneer of modern cardiothoracic surgery.

    John Young Templeton III was born in 1917 in Portsmouth, Virginia, and graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1941. He completed his residency training under Dr. John H. Gibbon, Jr., and was the first resident who worked on Gibbon\u27s heart-lung machine. After his training, he remained at Jefferson as an American Cancer Society fellow and Damon Runyon fellow and went on to become the fourth Samuel D. Gross Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery in 1967. Dr. Templeton was the recipient of numerous grants and published over 80 papers in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. As a teacher and mentor, he was a beloved figure who placed great faith in his residents. He participated in over 60 professional societies, serving as president to many such as the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery and the Pennsylvania Association of Thoracic Surgery. He was also recognized through his many awards, in particular the John Y. Templeton III lectureship established in 1980 at Jefferson of whom Denton Cooley was the first lecturer. Dr. Templeton retired from practice in 1987. He is forever remembered as an important model of a modern surgeon evident in numerous academic achievements, the admiration and affection of his trainees, and the lives of patients that he had touched

    We consider close-packed dimers, or perfect matchings, on two-dimensional regular lattices. We review known results and derive new expressions for the free energy, entropy, and the molecular freedom of dimers for a number of lattices including the simple-quartic (4^4), honeycomb (6^3), triangular (3^6), kagome (3.6.3.6), 3-12 (3.12^2) and its dual [3.12^2], and 4-8 (4.8^2) and its dual Union Jack [4.8^2] Archimedean tilings.
