An evaluation of the relative efficacy of an open airway, an oxygen reservoir and continuous positive airway pressure 5 cmH2O on the non-ventilated lung
Publisher's copy made available with the permission of the publisher © Australian Society of AnaesthetistsThe aim of this study, during one-lung ventilation, was to evaluate if oxygenation could be improved by use of a simple oxygen reservoir or application of 5 cmH2O continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to the non-ventilated lung compared with an open airway. Twenty-three patients with lung malignancy, undergoing thoracotomy requiring at least 60 minutes of one-lung ventilation before lung lobe excision, were studied. After routine induction and establishment of one-lung ventilation, the three treatments were applied in turn to the same patient in a sequence selected randomly. The first treatment was repeated as a fourth treatment and these results of the repeated treatment averaged to minimize the effect of slow changes. Arterial oxygenation was measured by an arterial blood gas 15 minutes after the application of each treatment. Twenty patients completed the study. Mean PaO2 (in mmHg) was 210.3 (SD 105.5) in the 'OPEN' treatment, 186.0 (SD 109.2) in the 'RESERVOIR' treatment, and 240.5 (SD 116.0) in the 'CPAP' treatment. This overall difference was not quite significant (P=0.058, paired ANOVA), but comparison of the pairs showed that there was a significant better oxygenation only with the CPAP compared to the reservoir treatments (t=2.52, P=0.021). While the effect on the surgical field was not apparent in most patients, in one patient surgery was impeded during CPAP. Our results show that the use of a reservoir does not give oxygenation better than an open tube, and is less effective than the use of CPAP 5 cmH2O on the non-ventilated lung during one-lung ventilation.J. Immunosuppressive macrophages induced by arthropathic peptidoglycan-polysaccharide polymers from bacterial cell walls.
Rats injected with peptidoglycan-polysaccharide polymers derived from group A streptococcal cell walls (PG-APS) develop a chronic, remittant, erosive synovitis. Spleen cells from injected rats failed to proliferate when stimulated in vitro by Con A or PHA, unless nylon wool adherent cells were first removed. The suppression could also be reversed by removing phagocytic cells which had ingested carbonyl iron. Cells from control rats were suppressed in vitro by co-culture with unfractionated or nylon wool-adherent cells from PG-APS injected rats, and the suppressor activity was still expressed after exposure of the suppressor cells to 3,000 rad of irradiation. Addition of catalase and indomethacin to cultures only partially reversed the suppression. T lymphocytes from rats given a single arthropathic dose of PG-APS remained suppressed for at least 86 days after injection. Cells from rats given a low, non-arthropathic dose of PG-APS did not become suppressed. Cells from the Buffalo rat, which is resistant to development of PG-APS-induced chronic arthritis, showed less suppression than cells from the susceptible Lewis and Sprague-Dawley rat strains
On the Truncated Pareto Distribution with applications
The Pareto probability distribution is widely applied in different fields
such us finance, physics, hydrology, geology and astronomy. This note deals
with an application of the Pareto distribution to astrophysics and more
precisely to the statistical analysis of mass of stars and of diameters of
asteroids. In particular a comparison between the usual Pareto distribution and
its truncated version is presented. Finally a possible physical mechanism that
produces Pareto tails for the distribution of the masses of stars is suggested.Comment: 10 pages 6 figure
Geometry, Scaling and Universality in the Mass Distributions in Heavy Ion Collisions
Various features of the mass yields in heavy ion collisions are studied. The
mass yields are discussed in terms of iterative one dimensional discrete maps.
These maps are shown to produce orbits for a monomer or for a nucleus which
generate the mass yields and the distribution of cluster sizes. Simple
Malthusian dynamics and non-linear Verhulst dynamics are used to illustrate the
approach. Nuclear cobwebbing, attractors of the dynamics, and Lyapanov
exponents are discussed for the mass distribution. The self-similar property of
the Malthusian orbit offers a new variable for the study of scale invariance
using power moments of the mass distribution. Correlation lengths, exponents
and dimensions associated with scaling relations are developed. Fourier
transforms of the mass distribution are used to obtain power spectra which are

Proton Decay in Minimal Supersymmetric SU(5)
We systematically study proton decay in the minimal supersymmetric SU(5)
grand unified theory. We find that although the available parameter space of
soft masses and mixings is quite constrained, the theory is still in accord

Entrance-channel Mass-asymmetry Dependence of Compound-nucleus Formation Time in Light Heavy-ion Reactions
The entrance-channel mass-asymmetry dependence of the compound nucleus
formation time in light heavy-ion reactions has been investigated within the
framework of semiclassical dissipative collision models. the model calculations
have been succesfully applied to the formation of the Ar compound
nucleus as populated via the Be+Si, B+Al,
C+Mg and F+F entrance channels. The shape evolution
of several other light composite systems appears to be consistent with the
so-called "Fusion Inhibition Factor" which has been experimentally observed. As
found previously in more massive systems for the fusion-evaporation process,
the entrance-channel mass-asymmetry degree of freedom appears to determine the
competition between the different mechanisms as well as the time scales

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Pion Scattering from Li
We show that the neutron and proton transition densities predicted by recent
quantum Monte Carlo calculations for A=6,7 nuclei are consistent with pion
scattering from 6Li and 7Li at energies near the Delta resonance. This has
provided a microscopic understanding of the enhancement factors for quadrople
excitations, which were needed to describe pion inelastic scattering within the

Novel Approach to Confront Electroweak Data and Theory
A novel approach to study electroweak physics at one-loop level in generic
theories is introduced. It separates the 1-loop
corrections into two pieces: process specific ones from vertex and box
contributions, and universal ones from contributions to the gauge boson
propagators. The latter are parametrized in terms of four effective form
factors , , and corresponding to the , , and
propagators. Under the assumption that only the Standard Model contributes to
the process specific corrections, the magnitudes of the four form factors are
determined at and at q^2=\mmz by fitting to all available precision
experiments. These values are then compared systematically with predictions of
theories. In all fits \alpha_s(\mz) and
\bar{\alpha}(\mmz) are treated as external parameters in order to keep the
interpretation as flexible as possible. The treatment of the electroweak data
is presented in detail together with the relevant theoretical formulae used to
interpret the data. No deviation from the Standard Model has been identified.
Ranges of the top quark and Higgs boson masses are derived as functions of
\alpha_s(\mz) and \bar{\alpha}(\mmz). Also discussed are consequences of
the recent precision measurement of the left-right asymmetry at SLC as well as

Nonmonotonic inelastic tunneling spectra due to surface spin excitations in ferromagnetic junctions
The paper addresses inelastic spin-flip tunneling accompanied by surface spin
excitations (magnons) in ferromagnetic junctions. The inelastic tunneling
current is proportional to the magnon density of states which is
energy-independent for the surface waves and, for this reason, cannot account
for the bias-voltage dependence of the observed inelastic tunneling spectra.
This paper shows that the bias-voltage dependence of the tunneling spectra can
arise from the tunneling matrix elements of the electron-magnon interaction.
These matrix elements are derived from the Coulomb exchange interaction using
the itinerant-electron model of magnon-assisted tunneling. The results for the
inelastic tunneling spectra, based on the nonequilibrium Green's function
calculations, are presented for both parallel and antiparallel magnetizations

Estimation of Piecewise-Deterministic Trajectories in a Quantum Optics Scenario
The manipulation of individual copies of quantum systems is one of the most groundbreaking experimental discoveries in the field of quantum physics. On both an experimental and a theoretical level, it has been shown that the dynamics of a single copy of an open quantum system is a trajectory of a piecewise-deterministic process. To the best of our knowledge, this application field has not been explored by the literature in applied mathematics, from both probabilistic and statistical perspectives. The objective of this chapter is to provide a self-contained presentation of this kind of model, as well as its specificities in terms of observations scheme of the system, and a first attempt to deal with a statistical issue that arises in the quantum world
