A note on the index bundle over the moduli space of monopoles
Donaldson has shown that the moduli space of monopoles is diffeomorphic
to the space \Rat_k of based rational maps from the two-sphere to itself. We
use this diffeomorphism to give an explicit description of the bundle on
\Rat_k obtained by pushing out the index bundle from . This gives an
alternative and more explicit proof of some earlier results of Cohen and Jones.Comment: 9 page
Singularities in ternary mixtures of k-core percolation
Heterogeneous k-core percolation is an extension of a percolation model which
has interesting applications to the resilience of networks under random damage.
In this model, the notion of node robustness is local, instead of global as in
uniform k-core percolation. One of the advantages of k-core percolation models
is the validity of an analytical mathematical framework for a large class of
network topologies. We study ternary mixtures of node types in random networks
and show the presence of a new type of critical phenomenon. This scenario may
have useful applications in the stability of large scale infrastructures and

Total daily energy expenditure in black and white, lean and obese South African women.
Background/Objectives:In South Africa (SA), the prevalence of obesity in women is 56%, with black women being most at risk (62%). Studies in the United States have demonstrated ethnic differences in resting (REE) and total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) between African American (AA) and their white counterparts. We investigated whether differences in EE exist in black and white SA women, explaining, in part, the ethnic obesity prevalence differences.Subjects/Methods:We measured REE, TDEE and physical activity EE (PAEE) in lean (BMI 30 kg m(-2)) SA women (N=44, 30+/-6 year). REE, TDEE, PAEE and total awake EE were measured during a 21 h stay in a respiration chamber.Results:Black and white subjects within obese and lean groups were not significantly different for age, mass, BMI and % body fat. However, fat-free mass (kg FFM) was consistently lower in the black women (P<0.01) in both weight groups. After adjusting EE measurements for differences in FFM, REE was not significantly different for either body weight or ethnicity, although 24 h TDEE (kJ) was significantly greater in the obese women (P<0.01) and white women (P<0.05). Total awake non-PAEE was not significantly different for either groups, while total awake time was only significantly lower for the lean groups (P<0.01). Total PAEE (kJ min(-1)) was significantly lower in the lean (P<0.001) and black groups (P<0.01).Conclusions:In this sample of matched, lean and obese, black and white SA women, differences in TDEE were largely explained by ethnic differences in PAEE, and were not as a result of ethnic differences in REE.European Journal of Clinical Nutrition advance online publication, 13 February 2008; doi:10.1038/ejcn.2008.8
Sonographically determined anomalies and outcome in 170 chromosomally abnormal fetuses
Structural pathology and outcome were studied in 170 chromosomally abnormal fetuses. Numerical chromosomal abnormalities were established in 158 (93 per cent) cases, of which 110 (71 per cent) represented trisomies, 30 (18 per cent) Turner syndrome, and 18 (11 per cent) triploidy. Structural chromosomal abnormalities were diagnosed in 12 (7 per cent) cases. Gestational age at referral was significantly shorter for pregnancies with Turner syndrome than for the other chromosomal abnormalities. Referral before 20 weeks of gestation was mainly based on fetal structural pathology alone (92 per cent); after 20 weeks, patients were referred because of structural pathology combined with small for gestational age, oligohydramnios, or polyhydramnios. Referral as a result of suspected multiple organ pathology occurred in 73.5 per cent of pregnancies. An abnormal amniotic fluid volume was present in 59/170 (34.5 per cent) chromosomally affected pregnancies, i.e., oligohydramnios in 31 and polyhydramnios in 28 cases. Birth weight was below the tenth percentile in over half of the chromosomally abnormal fetuses, except for Turnersyndrome. Fetal outcome was poor, with a survival rate at 1 month of 30 per cent for trisomies which was mainly determined by trisomy 21 (14/18=77.5 per cent)
HIV Linkage to Care and Retention in Care Rate Among MSM in Guangzhou, China
Quantifying HIV service provision along the HIV care continuum is increasingly important for monitoring and evaluating HIV interventions. We examined factors associated with linkage and retention in care longitudinally among MSM (n = 1974, 4933 person-years) diagnosed and living in Guangzhou, China, in 2008â2014. We measured longitudinal change of retention in care (â„2 CD4 tests per year) from linkage and antiretroviral therapy initiation (ART). We examined factors associated with linkage using logistic regression and with retention using generalized estimating equations. The rate of linkage to care was 89% in 2014. ART retention rate dropped from 71% (year 1) to 46% (year 2), suggesting that first-year retention measures likely overestimate retention over longer periods. Lower CD4 levels and older age predicted retention in ART care. These data can inform interventions to improve retention about some subgroups
Gravitational Leptogenesis and Neutrino Mass Limit

of interaction between the Ricci scalar and the baryon current ,
and proposed a mechanism for baryogenesis, the
gravitational baryogenesis. Generally, however, vanishes in
the radiation dominated era. In this paper we consider a generalized form of
their interaction, and study again the possibility
of gravitational baryo(lepto)genesis. Taking , we will show
that does not vanish and the
required baryon number asymmetry can be {\it naturally} generated in the early

Non Linear Current Response of a Many-Level Tunneling System: Higher Harmonics Generation
The fully nonlinear response of a many-level tunneling system to a strong
alternating field of high frequency is studied in terms of the
Schwinger-Keldysh nonequilibrium Green functions. The nonlinear time dependent
tunneling current is calculated exactly and its resonance structure is
elucidated. In particular, it is shown that under certain reasonable conditions
on the physical parameters, the Fourier component is sharply peaked at
, where is the spacing between
two levels. This frequency multiplication results from the highly nonlinear
process of photon absorption (or emission) by the tunneling system. It is
also conjectured that this effect (which so far is studied mainly in the

Riverkin: Seizing the moment to remake vital relations in the United Kingdom and beyond
1. We show how the dire state of the Earth's rivers entangles intimately with âthingifyingâ processes at the heart of colonial modernity. Known in many precolonial and Indigenous contexts as person-like kin, we describe how rivers the world over have been re-done primarily as thingâamoral, controllable, a potential commodity like anything else.
2. We develop and work with a provisory concept of kin as those constituents of environments that reciprocally nurture, and contribute to the substance of, one another's life and wellbeing.
3. We show how kinship with rivers figures centrally in primarily Indigenous-led struggles in various regions of the globe for the recognition and enforcement of river personhood and rights. This is partly because people are motivated to fight passionately for their kin.
4. With some careful caveats, we argue that associating river kinship exclusively with Indigenous worlds undermines its potential for global impact. Thus, as an apposite case study, the latter part of the paper focuses on some of the socialâecological trends which we suggest are opening up the possibility for the re-establishment of âriverkinshipâ in the United Kingdom.
