The winds of change: An archaeometallurgical study of silver production in the Porco-Potosi region, southern Bolivia AD 1500-2000.
This thesis considers the technology employed to produce silver within the Porco-Potosi region, southern Bolivia, providing archaeo-metallurgical data on indigenous and European silver production methods in Porco during the period AD 1500 to 2000. The research has been conducted as part of Proyecto Arqueologico Porco-Potosi (PAPP) set up by Dr Mary Van Buren (Colorado State University). The region of Porco was home to an Inca mine already prior to the Spanish conquest in 1538. Five years later, Spanish rule was established at Potosi. Indigenous technology, such as wind blown furnaces, huayrachinas, continued to be used in the region until the introduction of mercury amalgamation from 1570 onwards meant that the indigenous methods of silver production were superseded. Huayrachina technology employed at Porco dates back to at least the mid 16th century, with historical indications for earlier usage. PAPP has documented ongoing huayrachina smelting near Porco as late as 2003, showing the continuing existence of this technology. In this thesis, different silver production techniques from the archaeological and ethnographic records have been assessed using analytical techniques: Energy Dispersive X-Ray Ruorescence, Optical Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy, and including a historical, archaeological and theoretical review of the relevant data. In Porco, a diverse range of metallurgical techniques was being used for both small and large scale production. From the early colonial periods onwards both European and indigenous methods were used simultaneously to produce silver. The Spanish influence is evident in the archaeological remains of European furnaces. The analyses of the European furnaces show that these were more efficient in extracting metal than the indigenous huayrachinas, at the expense of an increased fuel consumption. A comparison between the archaeological and recent huayrachina remains has shown differences in smelting capacity the latter having a relatively low metal yield and reduced technical efficiency, and indicating a change in ore composition. Recent silver production shows an environmental adaptation taking into account the difficulty and cost in obtaining fuel and ore. The continued use of the huayrachina over five centuries shows the persistence of indigenous technology, despite other production methods being available. The One-loop Open Superstring Massless Five-point Amplitude with the Non-Minimal Pure Spinor Formalism
We compute the massless five-point amplitude of open superstrings using the
non-minimal pure spinor formalism and obtain a simple kinematic factor in pure
spinor superspace, which can be viewed as the natural extension of the
kinematic factor of the massless four-point amplitude. It encodes bosonic and
fermionic external states in supersymmetric form and reduces to existing
bosonic amplitudes when expanded in components, therefore proving their
equivalence. We also show how to compute the kinematic structures involving

Deaf, Dumb, and Chatting Robots, Enabling Distributed Computation and Fault-Tolerance Among Stigmergic Robot
We investigate ways for the exchange of information (explicit communication)
among deaf and dumb mobile robots scattered in the plane. We introduce the use
of movement-signals (analogously to flight signals and bees waggle) as a mean
to transfer messages, enabling the use of distributed algorithms among the
robots. We propose one-to-one deterministic movement protocols that implement
explicit communication. We first present protocols for synchronous robots. We
begin with a very simple coding protocol for two robots. Based on on this
protocol, we provide one-to-one communication for any system of n \geq 2 robots
equipped with observable IDs that agree on a common direction (sense of
direction). We then propose two solutions enabling one-to-one communication
among anonymous robots. Since the robots are devoid of observable IDs, both
protocols build recognition mechanisms using the (weak) capabilities offered to
the robots. The first protocol assumes that the robots agree on a common
direction and a common handedness (chirality), while the second protocol
assumes chirality only. Next, we show how the movements of robots can provide
implicit acknowledgments in asynchronous systems. We use this result to design
asynchronous one-to-one communication with two robots only. Finally, we combine
this solution with the schemes developed in synchronous settings to fit the
general case of asynchronous one-to-one communication among any number of
robots. Our protocols enable the use of distributing algorithms based on
message exchanges among swarms of Stigmergic robots. Furthermore, they provides
robots equipped with means of communication to overcome faults of their
communication device
Motivation as a predictor of outcomes in school-based humanistic counselling
Recent years have seen a growth in the provision of counselling within UK secondary schools, and research indicates that it is associated with significant reductions in psychological distress. However, little is known about the moderators and mediators of positive therapeutic benefit. In the field of adult mental health, motivation has been found to be one of the strongest predictors of therapeutic outcomes, and it was hypothesised that this may also be a predictor of outcomes for young people in school-based counselling services. To assess the relationship between young peopleâs motivation for counselling and its effectiveness within a secondary school setting. Eighty-one young people (12 - 17 years old) who attended school-based humanistic counselling services in Scotland. Clients completed a measure of motivation for counselling at the commencement of their therapeutic work and a measure of psychological wellbeing at the commencement and termination of counselling. Motivation for counselling was not found to be significantly related to outcomes. The results indicate that the association between motivation and outcomes may be weaker in young people as compared with adults. However, a number of design factors may also account for the non-significant findings: insufficient participants, marginal reliability of the motivation measure and social desirability effects

Fermion Masses and Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking from a Single U(1)
We present a supersymmetric model of flavor. A single U(1) gauge group is
responsible for both generating the flavor spectrum and communicating
supersymmetry breaking to the visible sector. The problem of Flavor Changing
Neutral Currents is overcome, in part using an `Effective Supersymmetry'
spectrum among the squarks, with the first two generations very heavy. All
masses are generated dynamically and the theory is completely renormalizable.
The model contains a simple Froggatt-Nielsen sector and communicates
supersymmetry breaking via gauge mediation without requiring a separate
messenger sector. By forcing the theory to be consistent with SU(5) Grand
Unification, the model predicts a large tan beta and a massless up quark. While
respecting the experimental bounds on CP violation in the K-system, the model
leads to a large enhancement of CP violation in B-(B bar) mixing as well as in

Fetal Testosterone Predicts Sexually Differentiated Childhood Behavior in Girls and in Boys
ABSTRACTâMammals, including humans, show sex differences in juvenile play behavior. In rodents and nonhuman primates, these behavioral sex differences result, in part, from sex differences in androgens during early development. Girls exposed to high levels of androgen prenatally, because of the genetic disorder congenital adrenal hyperplasia, show increased male-typical play, suggesting similar hormonal influences on human development, at least in females. Here, we report that fetal testosterone measured from amniotic fluid relates positively to male-typical scores on a standardized questionnaire measure of sextypical play in both boys and girls. These results show, for the first time, a link between fetal testosterone and the development of sex-typical play in children from the general population, and are the first data linking high levels of prenatal testosterone to increased male-typical play behavior in boys. Time-of-arrival distributions from position-momentum and energy-time joint measurements
The position-momentum quasi-distribution obtained from an Arthurs and Kelly
joint measurement model is used to obtain indirectly an ``operational''
time-of-arrival (TOA) distribution following a quantization procedure proposed
by Kocha\'nski and W\'odkiewicz [Phys. Rev. A 60, 2689 (1999)]. This TOA
distribution is not time covariant. The procedure is generalized by using other
phase-space quasi-distributions, and sufficient conditions are provided for
time covariance that limit the possible phase-space quasi-distributions
essentially to the Wigner function, which, however, provides a non-positive TOA
quasi-distribution. These problems are remedied with a different quantization
procedure which, on the other hand, does not guarantee normalization. Finally
an Arthurs and Kelly measurement model for TOA and energy (valid also for
arbitrary conjugate variables when one of the variables is bounded from below)
is worked out. The marginal TOA distribution so obtained, a distorted version
of Kijowski's distribution, is time covariant, positive, and normalized
Solitosynthesis of Q-balls
We study the formation of Q-balls in the early universe, concentrating on
potentials with a cubic or quartic attractive interaction. Large Q-balls can
form via solitosynthesis, a process of gradual charge accretion, provided some
primordial charge assymetry and initial ``seed'' Q-balls exist. We find that
such seeds are possible in theories in which the attractive interaction is of
the form , with a light ``Higgs'' mass. Condensate formation
and fragmentation is only possible for masses in the sub-eV range;
