    Complex collective states in a one-dimensional two-atom system

    We consider a pair of identical two-level atoms interacting with a scalar field in one dimension, separated by a distance x21x_{21}. We restrict our attention to states where one atom is excited and the other is in the ground state, in symmetric or anti-symmetric combinations. We obtain exact collective decaying states, belonging to a complex spectral representation of the Hamiltonian. The imaginary parts of the eigenvalues give the decay rates, and the real parts give the average energy of the collective states. In one dimension there is strong interference between the fields emitted by the atoms, leading to long-range cooperative effects. The decay rates and the energy oscillate with the distance x21x_{21}. Depending on x21x_{21}, the decay rates will either decrease, vanish or increase as compared with the one-atom decay rate. We have sub- and super-radiance at periodic intervals. Our model may be used to study two-cavity electron wave-guides. The vanishing of the collective decay rates then suggests the possibility of obtaining stable configurations, where an electron is trapped inside the two cavities.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, submitted to Phys.     Percolation theory applied to measures of fragmentation in social networks

    We apply percolation theory to a recently proposed measure of fragmentation FF for social networks. The measure FF is defined as the ratio between the number of pairs of nodes that are not connected in the fragmented network after removing a fraction qq of nodes and the total number of pairs in the original fully connected network. We compare FF with the traditional measure used in percolation theory, PP_{\infty}, the fraction of nodes in the largest cluster relative to the total number of nodes. Using both analytical and numerical methods from percolation, we study Erd\H{o}s-R\'{e}nyi (ER) and scale-free (SF) networks under various types of node removal strategies. The removal strategies are: random removal, high degree removal and high betweenness centrality removal. We find that for a network obtained after removal (all strategies) of a fraction qq of nodes above percolation threshold, P(1F)1/2P_{\infty}\approx (1-F)^{1/2}. For fixed PP_{\infty} and close to percolation threshold (q=qcq=q_c), we show that 1F1-F better reflects the actual fragmentation. Close to qcq_c, for a given PP_{\infty}, 1F1-F has a broad distribution and it is thus possible to improve the fragmentation of the network. We also study and compare the fragmentation measure FF and the percolation measure PP_{\infty} for a real social network of workplaces linked by the households of the employees and find similar results.Comment: submitted to PR

    The Frequency of Carbon Stars Among Extremely Metal-Poor Stars

    We demonstrate that there are systematic scale errors in the [Fe/H] values determined by the Hamburg/ESO Survey (and by inference by the HK Survey in the past) for certain extremely metal poor highly C-enhanced giants. The consequences of these scale errors are that a) the fraction of carbon stars at extremely low metallicities has been overestimated in several papers in the recent literature b) the number of extremely metal poor stars known is somewhat lower than has been quoted in the recent literature c) the yield for extremely metal poor stars by the HES Survey is somewhat lower than is stated in the recent literature. A preliminary estimate for the frequency of Carbon stars among the giants in the HES sample with -4 < [Fe/H] < -2.0 dex is 7.4 +-2.9%; adding an estimate for the C-enhanced giants with [C/Fe] > 1.0 dex without detectable C2 bands raises the fraction to 14 +-4$%. We rely on the results of an extensive set of homogeneous detailed abundance analyses of stars expected to have [Fe/H] < -3.0 dex selected from the HES to establish these claims. We have found that the Fe-metallicity of the cooler (Teff < 5200K) C-stars as derived from spectra taken with HIRES at Keck are a factor of ~10 higher than those obtained via the algorithm used by the HES project to analyze the moderate resolution follow-up spectra, which is identical to that used until very recently by the HK Survey. This error in Fe-abundance estimate for C-stars arises from a lowering of the emitted flux in the continuum bandpasses of the KP (3933 A line of CaII) and particularly the HP2 (Hdelta) indices used to estimate [Fe/H] due to absorption from strong molecular bands.Comment: Accepted to the ApJL after a very lengthly duel with the 3 simultaneous referee

    Assessing neural tuning for object perception in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder with multivariate pattern analysis of fMRI data.

    IntroductionDeficits in visual perception are well-established in schizophrenia and are linked to abnormal activity in the lateral occipital complex (LOC). Related deficits may exist in bipolar disorder. LOC contains neurons tuned to object features. It is unknown whether neural tuning in LOC or other visual areas is abnormal in patients, contributing to abnormal perception during visual tasks. This study used multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to investigate perceptual tuning for objects in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.MethodsFifty schizophrenia participants, 51 bipolar disorder participants, and 47 matched healthy controls completed five functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) runs of a perceptual task in which they viewed pictures of four different objects and an outdoor scene. We performed classification analyses designed to assess the distinctiveness of activity corresponding to perception of each stimulus in LOC (a functionally localized region of interest). We also performed similar classification analyses throughout the brain using a searchlight technique. We compared classification accuracy and patterns of classification errors across groups.ResultsStimulus classification accuracy was significantly above chance in all groups in LOC and throughout visual cortex. Classification errors were mostly within-category confusions (e.g., misclassifying one chair as another chair). There were no group differences in classification accuracy or patterns of confusion.ConclusionsThe results show for the first time MVPA can be used successfully to classify individual perceptual stimuli in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. However, the results do not provide evidence of abnormal neural tuning in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

    Youth Single-Sport Specialization in Professional Baseball Players.

    Background: An increasing number of youth baseball athletes are specializing in playing baseball at younger ages. Purpose: The purpose of our study was to describe the age and prevalence of single-sport specialization in a cohort of current professional baseball athletes. In addition, we sought to understand the trends surrounding single-sport specialization in professional baseball players raised within and outside the United States (US). Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A survey was distributed to male professional baseball athletes via individual team athletic trainers. Athletes were asked if and at what age they had chosen to specialize in playing baseball at the exclusion of other sports, and data were then collected pertaining to this decision. We analyzed the rate and age of specialization, the reasons for specialization, and the athlete\u27s perception of injuries related to specialization. Results: A total of 1673 professional baseball athletes completed the survey, representing 26 of the 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) organizations. Less than half (44.5%) of professional athletes specialized in playing a single sport during their childhood/adolescence. Those who reported specializing in their youth did so at a mean age of 14.09 ± 2.79 years. MLB players who grew up outside the US specialized at a significantly earlier age than MLB players native to the US (12.30 ± 3.07 vs 14.89 ± 2.24 years, respectively; Conclusion: This study challenges the current trends toward early youth sport specialization, finding that the majority of professional baseball athletes studied did not specialize as youth and that those who did specialize did so at a mean age of 14 years. With the potential cumulative effects of pitching and overhead throwing on an athlete\u27s arm, the trend identified in this study toward earlier specialization within baseball is concerning
