Vertical Integration and Trade Protection: The Case of Antidumping Duties
This paper analyzes the interaction of trade policy with the vertical structures of foreign firms exporting goods to the United States, focusing on the case of antidumping duties. I use a model that incorporates both vertical structure and the dynamics of U.S. antidumping duties to show that the policy has a notably different impact on vertically integrated and non-integrated foreign firms. I then successfully test the theoretical predictions using data on 489 antidumping cases. In particular, I find that non-integrated firms are more likely than vertically integrated firms to exit the U.S. market following the imposition of duties, and less likely to pass the duties on to consumers for certain products. My empirical findings also indicate that antidumping duties oscillate between low and high levels -a previously unnoticed, surprising and most-likely unintended consequence of the design of U.S. antidumping policy that is nevertheless predicted by my model.Vertical Intrgration, antidumping duties, trade policy
Method and apparatus for the guided ablative therapy of fast ventricular arrhythmia
Method and apparatus for guiding ablative therapy of abnormal biological electrical excitation. The excitation from the previous excitatory wave is significant at the beginning of the next excitation. In particular, it is designed for treatment of fast cardiac arrhythmias. Electrical signals are acquired from recording electrodes, and an inverse dipole method is used to identify the site of origin of an arrhythmia. The location of the tip of an ablation catheter is similarly localized from signals acquired from the recording electrodes while electrical pacing energy is delivered to the tip of the catheter close to or in contact with the cardiac tissue. The catheter tip is then guided to the site of origin of the arrhythmia, and ablative radio frequency energy is delivered to its tip to ablate the site
Non-adiabatic pumping in an oscillating-piston model
We consider the prototypical "piston pump" operating on a ring, where a
circulating current is induced by means of an AC driving. This can be regarded
as a generalized Fermi-Ulam model, incorporating a finite-height moving wall
(piston) and non trivial topology (ring). The amount of particles transported
per cycle is determined by a layered structure of phase-space. Each layer is
characterized by a different drift velocity. We discuss the differences
compared with the adiabatic and Boltzmann pictures, and highlight the
significance of the "diabatic" contribution that might lead to a
counter-stirring effect.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, improved versio
Occupation Statistics of a BEC for a Driven Landau-Zener Crossing
We consider an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) loaded in a biased
double-well trap with tunneling rate and inter-atomic interaction . The
BEC is prepared such that all atoms are in the left well. We drive the
system by sweeping the potential difference between the two wells.
Depending on the interaction , and the sweep rate , we
distinguish three dynamical regimes: adiabatic, diabatic, and sudden, and
consider the occupation statistics of the final state. The analysis goes beyond
mean-field theory and is complemented by a semiclassical picture.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Finding Social Media Trolls: Dynamic Keyword Selection Methods for Rapidly-Evolving Online Debates
Online harassment is a significant social problem. Prevention of online
harassment requires rapid detection of harassing, offensive, and negative
social media posts. In this paper, we propose the use of word embedding models
to identify offensive and harassing social media messages in two aspects:
detecting fast-changing topics for more effective data collection and
representing word semantics in different domains. We demonstrate with
preliminary results that using the GloVe (Global Vectors for Word
Representation) model facilitates the discovery of new and relevant keywords to
use for data collection and trolling detection. Our paper concludes with a
discussion of a research agenda to further develop and test word embedding
models for identification of social media harassment and trolling.Comment: AI for Social Good workshop at NeurIPS (2019
Counting statistics in multiple path geometries and the fluctuations of the integrated current in a quantum stirring device
The amount of particles that are transported via a path of motion is
characterized by its expectation value and by its variance . We
analyze what happens if a particle has two optional paths available to get from
one site to another site, and in particular what is for the current
which is induced in a quantum stirring device. It turns out that coherent
splitting and the stirring effect are intimately related and cannot be
understood within the framework of the prevailing probabilistic theory.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, published version, Latex Eq# correcte
