The in-medium isovector pi N amplitude from low energy pion scattering
Differential cross sections for elastic scattering of 21.5 MeV positive and
negative pions by Si, Ca, Ni and Zr have been measured as part of a study of
the pion-nucleus potential across threshold. The `anomalous' repulsion in the
s-wave term was observed, as is the case with pionic atoms. The extra repulsion
can be accounted for by a chiral-motivated model where the pion decay constant
is modified in the medium. Unlike in pionic atoms, the anomaly cannot be
removed by merely introducing an empirical on-shell energy dependence.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures. Minor changes, to appear in PR
Killing Vector Fields in Three Dimensions: A Method to Solve Massive Gravity Field Equations
Killing vector fields in three dimensions play important role in the
construction of the related spacetime geometry. In this work we show that when
a three dimensional geometry admits a Killing vector field then the Ricci
tensor of the geometry is determined in terms of the Killing vector field and
its scalars. In this way we can generate all products and covariant derivatives
at any order of the ricci tensor. Using this property we give ways of solving
the field equations of Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) and New Massive
Gravity (NMG) introduced recently. In particular when the scalars of the
Killing vector field (timelike, spacelike and null cases) are constants then
all three dimensional symmetric tensors of the geometry, the ricci and einstein
tensors, their covariant derivatives at all orders, their products of all
orders are completely determined by the Killing vector field and the metric.
Hence the corresponding three dimensional metrics are strong candidates of
solving all higher derivative gravitational field equations in three
dimensions.Comment: 25 pages, some changes made and some references added, to be

Generalized Massive Gravity and Galilean Conformal Algebra in two dimensions
Galilean conformal algebra (GCA) in two dimensions arises as contraction of
two copies of the centrally extended Virasoro algebra ( with ). The central charges of
GCA can be expressed in term of Virasoro central charges. For finite and
non-zero GCA central charges, the Virasoro central charges must behave as
asymmetric form . We propose that, the bulk
description for 2d GCA with asymmetric central charges is given by general
massive gravity (GMG) in three dimensions. It can be seen that, if the
gravitational Chern-Simons coupling behaves as of order
O() or (), the central charges
of GMG have the above dependence. So, in non-relativistic scaling
limit , we calculated GCA parameters and finite
entropy in term of gravity parameters mass and angular momentum of GMG.Comment: 9 page
Thermodynamic Theory of Weakly Excited Granular Materials
We present a thermodynamic theory of weakly excited two-dimensional granular
systems from the view point of elementary excitations of spinless Fermion
systems. We introduce a global temperature T that is associated with the
acceleration amplitude \Gamma in a vibrating bed. We show that the
configurational statistics of weakly excited granular materials in a vibrating
bed obey the Fermi statistics.Comment: 12 pages, 1 figure, To Appear in Phys. Rev. Lett. April, 199
Hamiltonian analysis of BHT massive gravity
We study the Hamiltonian structure of the Bergshoeff-Hohm-Townsend (BHT)
massive gravity with a cosmological constant. In the space of coupling
constants , our canonical analysis reveals the special role of
the condition . In this sector, the dimension of the
physical phase space is found to be , which corresponds to two
Lagrangian degree of freedom. When applied to the AdS asymptotic region, the
canonical approach yields the conserved charges of the BTZ black hole, and
central charges of the asymptotic symmetry algebra.Comment: LATEX, 21 pages; v2: minor correction
Elastic scattering of low energy pions by nuclei and the in-medium isovector pi N amplitude
Measurements of elastic scattering of 21.5 MeV pi+ and pi- by Si, Ca, Ni and
Zr were made using a single arm magnetic spectrometer. Absolute calibration was
made by parallel measurements of Coulomb scattering of muons. Parameters of a
pion-nucleus optical potential were obtained from fits to all eight angular
distributions put together. The `anomalous' s-wave repulsion known from pionic
atoms is clearly observed and could be removed by introducing a
chiral-motivated density dependence of the isovector scattering amplitude,
which also greatly improved the fits to the data. The empirical energy
dependence of the isoscalar amplitude also improves the fits to the data but,
contrary to what is found with pionic atoms, on its own is incapable of
removing the anomaly.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figures, 5 tables. V2 added details on

Size Segregation and Convection of Granular Mixtures Almost Completely Packed in the Rotating Thin Box
Size segregation of granular mixtures which are almost completely packed in a
rotating drum is discussed with an effective simulation and a brief analysis.
Instead of a 3D drum, we simulate 2D rotating thin box which is almost
completely packed with granular mixtures. The phase inversion of radially
segregated pattern which was found in a 3D experiment are qualitatively
reproduced with this simulation, and a brief analysis is followed. Moreover in
our simulation, a global convection appears after radial segregation pattern is
formed, and this convection induces axially segregated pattern.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, PACS number(s): 45.70.-n, 45.70.M
AdS Black Hole Solutions in the Extended New Massive Gravity
We have obtained (warped) AdS black hole solutions in the three dimensional
extended new massive gravity. We investigate some properties of black holes and
obtain central charges of the two dimensional dual CFT. To obtain the central
charges, we use the relation between entropy and temperature according to the
AdS/CFT dictionary. For AdS black holes, one can also use the central charge
function formalism which leads to the same results.Comment: 24pages, some organization corrected, minor corrections, references

All stationary axi-symmetric local solutions of topologically massive gravity
We classify all stationary axi-symmetric solutions of topologically massive
gravity into Einstein, Schr\"odinger, warped and generic solutions. We
construct explicitly all local solutions in the first three sectors and present
an algorithm for the numerical construction of all local solutions in the
generic sector. The only input for this algorithm is the value of one constant
of motion if the solution has an analytic centre, and three constants of motion
otherwise. We present several examples, including soliton solutions that
asymptote to warped AdS.Comment: 42 pages, 9 figures. v2: Changed potentially confusing labelling of

A Lifshitz Black Hole in Four Dimensional R^2 Gravity
We consider a higher derivative gravity theory in four dimensions with a
negative cosmological constant and show that vacuum solutions of both Lifshitz
type and Schr\"{o}dinger type with arbitrary dynamical exponent z exist in this
system. Then we find an analytic black hole solution which asymptotes to the
vacuum Lifshitz solution with z=3/2 at a specific value of the coupling
constant. We analyze the thermodynamic behavior of this black hole and find
that the black hole has zero entropy while non-zero temperature, which is very
similar to the case of BTZ black holes in new massive gravity at a specific
coupling. In addition, we find that the three dimensional Lifshitz black hole
recently found by E. Ayon-Beato et al. has a negative entropy and mass when the
Newton constant is taken to be positive.Comment: 11 pages, no figure; v2, a minor error correcte
