    Expectations of successful female small school principals

    This paper forms part of a larger study investigating the experiences of twelve female teaching principals in small rural and isolated schools in their first year as school principal. The schools to which they were appointed had student enrolments ranging from 12 to 86 and were in geographic areas with no township, where the school building was the only structure, to small towns of less than 500. This study sought to discover the expectations stakeholders in small schools had of successful female teaching principals and the expectations teaching principals had of themselves. Interviews with both cohorts indicated a shared expectation that the teaching principal would come equipped with excellent communication skills, sound teaching knowledge and the ability to establish and maintain community relationships. Additional expectations from teaching principals related to their leaders hip, meeting systemic administrative requirements and balancing their work and personal lives. For stakeholders additional expectations included being organised in relation to isolation and having positive personal characteristics

    Enhancing the Impact of Research: Experimenting with Network Leadership Strategies to Grow a Vibrant Nature-Based Learning Research Network

    Research can fall short of having societal impact due to traditions of the research enterprise as well as the perceptions of researchers about their appropriate role. What if researchers saw their work as part of a social movement to make change, and the research enterprise was designed to encourage that view and to facilitate relevance, rigor, activation of research, and a collaborative approach to address research questions aligned with a common goal? What would such a research enterprise look like? In this article, we describe the application of “network leadership strategies” to develop a “generative, social-impact network” to support the efforts of a nature-based learning research network to advance knowledge of the natural environment's impact on children's learning and educational outcomes. The activities and achievements of the nature-based learning research network are examined through the lens of network-building approaches aiming to create social impact. Though inspired by and grounded in these approaches, the reality is that certain constraints influenced our ability to function collaboratively as a generative, social-impact network and to fully realize the potential of this approach. We describe these challenges and offer recommendations for other researchers interested in enhancing the social impact of research

    Effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker initiation on organ support-free days in patients hospitalized with COVID-19

    IMPORTANCE Overactivation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may contribute to poor clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19. Objective To determine whether angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) initiation improves outcomes in patients hospitalized for COVID-19. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS In an ongoing, adaptive platform randomized clinical trial, 721 critically ill and 58 non–critically ill hospitalized adults were randomized to receive an RAS inhibitor or control between March 16, 2021, and February 25, 2022, at 69 sites in 7 countries (final follow-up on June 1, 2022). INTERVENTIONS Patients were randomized to receive open-label initiation of an ACE inhibitor (n = 257), ARB (n = 248), ARB in combination with DMX-200 (a chemokine receptor-2 inhibitor; n = 10), or no RAS inhibitor (control; n = 264) for up to 10 days. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES The primary outcome was organ support–free days, a composite of hospital survival and days alive without cardiovascular or respiratory organ support through 21 days. The primary analysis was a bayesian cumulative logistic model. Odds ratios (ORs) greater than 1 represent improved outcomes. RESULTS On February 25, 2022, enrollment was discontinued due to safety concerns. Among 679 critically ill patients with available primary outcome data, the median age was 56 years and 239 participants (35.2%) were women. Median (IQR) organ support–free days among critically ill patients was 10 (–1 to 16) in the ACE inhibitor group (n = 231), 8 (–1 to 17) in the ARB group (n = 217), and 12 (0 to 17) in the control group (n = 231) (median adjusted odds ratios of 0.77 [95% bayesian credible interval, 0.58-1.06] for improvement for ACE inhibitor and 0.76 [95% credible interval, 0.56-1.05] for ARB compared with control). The posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitors and ARBs worsened organ support–free days compared with control were 94.9% and 95.4%, respectively. Hospital survival occurred in 166 of 231 critically ill participants (71.9%) in the ACE inhibitor group, 152 of 217 (70.0%) in the ARB group, and 182 of 231 (78.8%) in the control group (posterior probabilities that ACE inhibitor and ARB worsened hospital survival compared with control were 95.3% and 98.1%, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this trial, among critically ill adults with COVID-19, initiation of an ACE inhibitor or ARB did not improve, and likely worsened, clinical outcomes.     Two Zinc-Cluster Transcription Factors Control Induction of Alternative Oxidase in Neurospora crassa

    The alternative oxidase transfers electrons from ubiquinol to molecular oxygen, providing a mechanism for bypassing the later steps of the standard cytochrome-mediated electron transport chain. The enzyme is found in an array of organisms and in many cases is known to be produced in response to perturbations of the standard chain. Alternative oxidase is encoded in the nucleus but functions in the inner mitochondrial membrane. This implies the existence of a retrograde regulation pathway for communicating from the mitochondrion to the nucleus to induce alternative oxidase expression. Previous studies on alternative oxidase in fungi and plants have shown that a number of genes are required for expression of the enzyme, but the identity of these genes has remained elusive. By gene rescue we have now shown that the aod-2 and aod-5 genes of Neurospora crassa encode transcription factors of the zinc-cluster family. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays show that the DNA-binding domains of the AOD2 and AOD5 proteins act in tandem to bind a sequence element in the alternative oxidase gene promoter that is required for expression. Both proteins contain potential PAS domains near their C terminus, which are found primarily in proteins involved in signal transduction

    A narrative review on haptic devices: relating the physiology and psychophysical properties of the hand to devices for rehabilitation in central nervous system disorders

    Purpose. This paper provides rehabilitation professionals and engineers with a theoretical and pragmatic rationale for the inclusion of haptic feedback in the rehabilitation of central nervous system disorders affecting the hand.Method. A narrative review of haptic devices used in sensorimotor hand rehabilitation was undertaken. Presented papers were selected to outline and clarify the underlying somatosensory mechanisms underpinning these technologies and provide exemplars of the evidence to date.Results. Haptic devices provide kinaesthetic and/or tactile stimulation. Kinaesthetic haptics are beginning to be incorporated in central nervous system rehabilitation, however, there has been limited development of tactile haptics. Clinical research in haptic rehabilitation of the hand is embryonic but initial findings indicate potential clinical benefit. Conclusions. Haptic rehabilitation offers the potential to advance sensorimotor hand rehabilitation but both scientific and pragmatic developments are needed to ensure that its potential is realised.<br/
