Five-Branes in Heterotic Brane-World Theories
The effective action for five-dimensional heterotic M-theory in the presence
of five-branes is systematically derived from Horava-Witten theory coupled to
an M5-brane world-volume theory. This leads to a five-dimensional N=1 gauged
supergravity theory on S^1/Z_2 coupled to four-dimensional N=1 theories
residing on the two orbifold fixed planes and an additional bulk three-brane.
We analyse the properties of this action, particularly the four-dimensional
effective theory associated with the domain-wall vacuum state. The moduli
Kahler potential and the gauge-kinetic functions are determined along with the
explicit relations between four-dimensional superfields and five-dimensional

Crossover from Isotropic to Directed Percolation
Percolation clusters are probably the simplest example for scale--invariant
structures which either are governed by isotropic scaling--laws
(``self--similarity'') or --- as in the case of directed percolation --- may
display anisotropic scaling behavior (``self--affinity''). Taking advantage of
the fact that both isotropic and directed bond percolation (with one preferred
direction) may be mapped onto corresponding variants of (Reggeon) field theory,
we discuss the crossover between self--similar and self--affine scaling. This
has been a long--standing and yet unsolved problem because it is accompanied by
different upper critical dimensions: for isotropic, and
for directed percolation, respectively. Using a generalized
subtraction scheme we show that this crossover may nevertheless be treated
consistently within the framework of renormalization group theory. We identify
the corresponding crossover exponent, and calculate effective exponents for
different length scales and the pair correlation function to one--loop order.
Thus we are able to predict at which characteristic anisotropy scale the
crossover should occur. The results are subject to direct tests by both
computer simulations and experiment. We emphasize the broad range of

Systemic antibiotic prescribing to paediatric outpatients in 5 European countries: A population-based cohort study
Background: To describe the utilisation of antibiotics in children and adolescents across 5 European countries based on the same drug utilisation measures and age groups. Special attention was given to age-group-specific distributions of antibiotic subgroups, since comparison in this regard between countries is lacking so far.Methods: Outpatient paediatric prescriptions of systemic antibiotics during the years 2005-2008 were analysed using health care databases from the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy and Germany. Annual antibiotic prescription rates per 1,000 person years were estimated for each database and stratified by age (â€4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-18 years). Age-group-specific distributions of antibiotic subgroups were calculated for 2008.Results: With 957 prescriptions per 1000 person years, the highest annual prescription rate in the year 2008 was found in the Italian region Emilia Romagna followed by Germany (561), the UK (555), Denmark (481) and the Netherlands (294). Seasonal peaks during winter months were most pronounced in countries with high utilisation. Age-group-specific use varied substantially between countries with regard to total prescribing and distributions of antibiotic subgroups. Insights into the high-energy Îł-ray emission of Markarian 501 from extensive multifrequency observations in the Fermi era
We report on the Îł-ray activity of the blazar Mrk 501 during the first 480 days of Fermi operation. We find that the average Large Area Telescope (LAT) Îł-ray spectrum of Mrk 501 can be well described by a single power-law function with a photon index of 1.78 ± 0.03. While we observe relatively mild flux variations with the Fermi-LAT (within less than a factor of two), we detect remarkable spectral variability where the hardest observed spectral index within the LAT energy range is 1.52 ± 0.14, and the softest one is 2.51 ± 0.20. These unexpected spectral changes do not correlate with the measured flux variations above 0.3 GeV. In this paper, we also present the first results from the 4.5 month long multifrequency campaign (2009 March 15-August 1) on Mrk 501, which included the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), Swift, RXTE, MAGIC, and VERITAS, the F-GAMMA, GASP-WEBT, and other collaborations and instruments which provided excellent temporal and energy coverage of the source throughout the entire campaign. The extensive radio to TeV data set from this campaign provides us with the most detailed spectral energy distribution yet collected for this source during its relatively low activity. The average spectral energy distribution of Mrk 501 is well described by the standard one-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model. In the framework of this model, we find that the dominant emission region is characterized by a size âČ0.1 pc (comparable within a factor of few to the size of the partially resolved VLBA core at 15-43 GHz), and that the total jet power (â1044 erg s-1) constitutes only a small fraction (âŒ10-3) of the Eddington luminosity. The energy distribution of the freshly accelerated radiating electrons required to fit the time-averaged data has a broken power-law form in the energy range 0.3 GeV-10 TeV, with spectral indices 2.2 and 2.7 below and above the break energy of 20 GeV. We argue that such a form is consistent with a scenario in which the bulk of the energy dissipation within the dominant emission zone of Mrk 501 is due to relativistic, proton-mediated shocks. We find that the ultrarelativistic electrons and mildly relativistic protons within the blazar zone, if comparable in number, are in approximate energy equipartition, with their energy dominating the jet magnetic field energy by about two orders of magnitude. © 2011. Identifying a novel bile salt hydrolase from the keystone gut bacterium christensenella minuta
Christensenella minuta are human gut dwelling bacteria that have been proposed as key members of the gut microbiome, regulating energy balance and adiposity of their host. We formerly identified that a novel strain of C. minuta (strain DSM33407) boosted microbiota diversity and stimulated deconjugation of the primary bile acid taurocholic acid in human samples. However, there is no description of a bile salt hydrolase (BSH) protein carried in the genome of C. minuta. Here, we identified and cloned a protein from C. minutaâs genome that carries a potent BSH activity, which preferentially deconjugates glycine-conjugated bile acids. We then retrieved 14,319 putative BSH sequences from the NCBI database and filtered them using the UHGP database to collect a total of 6701 sequences that were used to build the most comprehensive phylogenetic tree of BSH-related enzymes identified in the human microbiome so far. This phylogenetic tree revealed that C. minutaâs BSH amino acid sequence clusters away from others with a threshold of 70% identity. This is therefore the first description of C. minutaâs BSH protein, which may be involved in its unique role within the human gut microbial ecosystem

Phylogenomic analysis of Clostridioides difficile ribotype 106 strains reveals novel genetic islands and emergent phenotypes
Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a major healthcare-associated diarrheal disease. Consistent with trends across the United States, C. difficile RT106 was the second-most prevalent molecular type in our surveillance in Arizona from 2015 to 2018. A representative RT106 strain displayed robust virulence and 100% lethality in the hamster model of acute CDI. We identified a unique 46 KB genomic island (GI1) in all RT106 strains sequenced to date, including those in public databases. GI1 was not found in its entirety in any other C. difficile clade, or indeed, in any other microbial genome; however, smaller segments were detected in Enterococcus faecium strains. Molecular clock analyses suggested that GI1 was horizontally acquired and sequentially assembled over time. GI1 encodes homologs of VanZ and a SrtB-anchored collagen-binding adhesin, and correspondingly, all tested RT106 strains had increased teicoplanin resistance, and a majority displayed collagen-dependent biofilm formation. Two additional genomic islands (GI2 and GI3) were also present in a subset of RT106 strains. All three islands are predicted to encode mobile genetic elements as well as virulence factors. Assessing connective understanding with visual and verbal tasks
.The role of temporal and causal connectives is relevant in reading comprehension. Children with comprehension difficulties have problems in interpreting these connectives (e.g. Amidon, 1976; Feagans, 1980; Pyykk\uf4nen, Niemi and J\ue4rvikivi, 2003; Trosborg, 1982). The Adaptive Learning System (ALS) TERENCE aims to develop children\u2019s comprehension through the use of adaptive visual and verbal games. Within this framework, the purpose of this study was to assess connective comprehension with three visual and verbal tasks. Two hundred and eight English and Italian children participated in this study. The main results show that the use of pictures does not always support comprehension. Moreover, less skilled children perform better at simultaneous connective \u201cwhile\u201d compared to the temporal sequential connectives (before, after) and causal (because) ones
