The ultrastructure of the gastrodermis and the nutrition of the gill parasitic Atriaster heterodus Lebedev and Paruchin, 1969 (Platyhelminthes: Monogenea)

The gastrodermis of Atriaster heterodus Lebedev & Paruchin, 1969 (Polyopisthocotylea), a gill parasite from Diplodus argenteus (Valenciennes, 1830), is composed of "U"-shape hematin cells and a connecting syncytium, both having cytoplasmic lamellae. These cells show outgrowths and bent folds which were seen to enclose lumen material. The trapped material was then subjected to endocytosis. The nature of ingested food material was comparatively analyzed by cytochemical and histochemical tests. Blood residues were detected in the gut but tests for mucins were negative. No intact erythrocytes were observed in the gut lumen

Salvador, BA, BrasilThe protozoan Giardia lamblia is the most frequent intestinal parasite of first-world countries and a major cause of waterborne disorder often referred to as traveler's diarrhea. We have previously noticed that the putrescine analog 1,4-diamino-2-butanone (DAB) remarkably inhibits the growth of anaerobic trichomonad and Trypanosoma cruzi parasites. Here, we examined the role of polyamines in Giardia cells using this putrescine analog. DAB impaired parasite proliferation dose-dependently. The analog induced increased flagella numbers and sometimes four ventral disks as well as asymmetrical division, indicating truncated or deregulated cytokinesis. Electron microscopy analysis revealed that DAB also triggered the encystment process. Oxidative stress was evaluated by measuring lipid peroxidation by thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) detection. Trophozoites incubated either with 1 mM of DAB or putrescine for 18 h displayed increased lipoperoxide levels. Addition of 200 microM aminoguanidine, a polyamine/diamine oxidase inhibitor, partially reverted the DAB, but not the putrescine effects, indicating that the DAB effects are due, at least in part, to DAB oxidation end products. These data indicate that polyamines play a role in Giardia cell division, differentiation, and antioxidant defenses

CONCLUSÃO: Este trabalho torna disponível a primeira adaptação para o contexto brasileiro de um instrumento específico para a detecção e a quantificação de sintomas dissociativos.<br>OBJECTIVE: This paper presents the cross-cultural adaptation to Portuguese of the Dissociative Experiences Scale, the worldwide most employed questionnaire for screening and quantifying dissociative phenomena. METHODS: Two translations and their respective back-translations were performed, as well as the evaluation of the semantic equivalence, the preparation of the synthetic version, the pre-testing on the target population, the definition of the final version and a second pre-testing on the target population. RESULTS: A high level of semantic equivalence between the original instrument and the two pairs of translations and back-translations was observed regarding the referential and general meanings. The two pre-testing in the target population led to alterations in order to achieve the criteria of semantic and operational equivalence. CONCLUSION: This work provides the first adaptation of a specific instrument to detect and quantify dissociative symptoms in the Brazilian context
