Ethnic diversity and dialect among the Greeks of hellenistic Egypt

    No full text
After the conquest of Alexander the Great, Greek immigrants into Ptolemaic Egypt kept their names and even their local dialect from Greece. This was to be expected in the first generations, but continued until later especially in the highest circles, including the court, where Macedonian was considered the language of the elite. This is shown for a Cyrenaean community in the Oxyrhynchite nome, but also for the royal court in Alexandria.Papyrologica Lugduno-batava, Series volume ID: 3status: publishe
